National Research Foundation (NRF) Masters and Doctoral Scholarships 2020 for young South Africans

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) are pleased to announce a call for applications for Masters and Doctoral Scholarships for Full-time Studies in 2020.

In the process of reducing the high volume of applications received yearly, duplication of applications into different programmes and increasing the turnaround time to informing successful applicants, the NRF has consolidated all the Masters and Doctoral scholarship programmes such as DAAD, Extension Support for Masters and Doctoral studies, NRF Freestanding, Innovation, Scarce Skill Development Fund (SSDF), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Doctoral and The Southern African Systems Analysis Center (SASAC) in this framework document.

Conditions of Grant

The NRF scholarship shall be held as the primarysource offunding.

The scholarship-holder may hold bursaries, awards, assistantships and receive emoluments from private institutionsin conjunction with the NRF scholarship.

The scholarship-holder will be accepted as a full-time student during the tenure of the scholarship. Scholarship-holders may not concurrently hold the scholarship with any full-time salaried employment position.

The scholarship holder must obtain the degree for which the scholarship was awarded by the contractual date, which is within one (1) year after NRF funding has ceased and notify the NRF via the relevant university authority,unless otherwise approved by the NRF in writing. Should the scholarship holder not complete the degree for which the scholarship was awarded, the funds will have to be returned to the NRF plus interest at the prevailing prime rate charged by the NRF bankers.

Call For Nominations: 2018 South African Women In Science Awards

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) calls for nominations for the 2018 South African Women in Science Awards (WISA).  The awards recognise and reward excellence by women scientists and researchers, and profile them as role models for younger women. The awards will be made to women who are South African citizens or permanent residents.

The theme for the 2018 WISA is leveraging science, technology and innovation to enhance inclusive growth and development.

The 2018 WISA will be presented on 16 August 2018 as part of the Department’s celebration of Women’s Month.

The theme for the 2018 WISA is leveraging science, technology and innovation to enhance inclusive growth and development. This theme is adapted from the 2018 priority theme for the 6th BRICS science technology and innovation (STI) Ministerial meeting, which will be hosted by South Africa in July 2018.

Awards in the distinguished woman and distinguished young woman researcher categories will be made for research that responds to the theme in the fields of Natural (Life and Physical) and Engineering Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Astronomy.  However, the DST Fellowships and TATA Scholarships are not restricted to the theme.

Awards will also be made to a category on Research and Innovation (R&I) leading to a demonstrable contribution in enhancing inclusive growth and development.

The awards will be made in the following categories:

  1. Awards for Distinguished Woman Researchers
  2. Awards for Distinguished Young Woman Researchers
  3. Awards for Research and Innovation
  4. DST Fellowships
  5. TATA Africa Scholarships for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology

Value of each award

Winner: R80 000; first runner-up: R45 000; and second runner-up: R35 000.

Nominations and applications should reach the Department of Science and Technology by Friday, 18 May 2018 and should be submitted electronically (using the attached form) to [email protected].

NOMINATION / APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  1. AWARDS FOR DISTINGUISHED WOMAN RESEARCHERS

These awards will be made to women scientists or researchers for their outstanding scientific contribution to advancing science and building the knowledge base in the theme of the awards.  Awards will be made in each of the following fields:

1.1    Natural (Life and Physical) and Engineering Sciences;

1.2    Humanities and Social Sciences; and

1.3    Astronomy

Nomination criteria

Nominations in the Natural (Life and Physical) and Engineering Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences fields are requested for established woman scientists or researchers with at least five years of postdoctoral experience, and who are actively involved in research.

Nominations in the Astronomy field are requested for established woman astronomers with at least eight years of experience, whose research has made a significant impact, and whose discoveries and technological innovations have led to demonstrable contribution in advancing the field of astronomy.

NB: Overall winners in the past ten years are not eligible to be nominated in the categories in which they won.

Who may make a nomination?

Any person who knows the nominee and her work well can make a nomination.  The nominator should provide the motivation as required in the nomination form.

NRF Freestanding, Innovation and Scarce Skills Masters and Doctoral Scholarships – South Africa

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) are pleased to announce the call for scholarship applications for 2018 in the following categories: Free-standing, Innovation, and Scarce Skills Development fund Masters and Doctoral Scholarships; as well as Scholarships for Freestanding Doctoral Studies Abroad.

The NRF makes funds available to support NRF Freestanding, SSDF and Innovation (including DST Priority Research Areas) Masters and Doctoral (including Doctoral abroad) candidates for the 2018 academic year.  Masters and Doctoral scholarships are awarded through a competitive process following a merit review process. However, NRF Freestanding Masters bursaries are released as block grants to South African public Universities.

Requirements:

  • These Scholarships are awarded to South African citizens, South African permanent residents as well as to a limited percentage of non-South African citizens registered at a South African public university for full-time studies.
  • In addition, the NRF makes funds available to support a small number of scholarships for full-time Doctoral studies abroad, with the objective of increasing the number and quality of Doctoral graduates in South Africa

Application Procedure:

  • Applicants must apply on the NRF Online Submission System at: https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za and follow the application process set out in the Application and Funding Guide.  All applicants must consult with his/her proposed supervisor in the process of submitting an application to ensure that the supervisor is in agreement with the scientific aspects contained in the application and, the proposed work plan for completion of the degree.

The submission deadline for applicants is 21 July 2017 for funding in 2018. Please consult your Research Office or Postgraduate Office for your institutions internal closing date, to ensure validation by institutional DAs prior to submission to the NRF.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST) calls for nominations for the 2017 South African Women in Science Awards (WISA). The awards recognise and reward excellence by women scientists and researchers, and profile them as role models for younger women. The awards will be made to women who are South African citizens or permanent residents.

The theme for the 2017 WISA is Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work, which is the 2017 priority theme for the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW).

Awards in the distinguished woman and distinguished young woman researcher categories will be made for research that responds to the theme in the fields of Natural (Life and Physical) and Engineering Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences. However, the DST Fellowships and TATA Scholarships are not restricted to the theme.

Awards will also be made to a special category within the theme which will award research and innovation (R&I) leading to demonstrable contribution in advancing women’s economic empowerment in the world of work

The 2017 WISA will be presented on 17 August 2017 as part of the Department’s celebration of Women’s Month. The awards will be made in the following categories:

AWARD CATEGORIES

  1. Awards for Distinguished Woman Researchers
  • Natural (Life and Physical) and Engineering Sciences
  • Humanities and Social Sciences

  1. DST Fellowships
  • Four current master’s students: 2 in natural and engineering sciences, 1 in human and social sciences (HSS), and 1 in indigenous knowledge systems (IKS).
  • Four current doctoral students: 2 in natural sciences, 1 in HSS, and 1 in IKS.
  1. TATA Africa Scholarships for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology
  • Three master’s students in disciplines where the participation of women is low.
  • Three doctoral students in disciplines where the participation of women is low.

NOTE:

  1. Winners may be requested to participate in public awareness initiatives led by the DST.
  2. Finalists will be required to submit a short profile and three high-resolution photographs to be used for publicity.

NOMINATIONS/ APPLICATIONS

Nominations and applications on the attached form should reach the Department of Science and Technology by Friday, 26 May 2017. No late submissions will be accepted.

Nominations and applications should clearly indicate the category and should be accompanied by the documentation specified for each category.

  • Free-standing, Innovation, and Scarce Skills Development fund Masters and Doctoral Scholarships; as well as Scholarships for Doctoral Studies Abroad.

  • In addition, the NRF makes funds available to support a small number of scholarships for full-time doctoral studies abroad, to South African citizens and permanent residents.
  • South African citizens and South African permanent residents living with a disability are encouraged to apply.

Applcation Procedure:

  • Applicants must apply on the NRF Online system at: https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za and follow the application process set out in the Application and Funding Guide.
  • All applicants must consult with his/her proposed supervisor in the process of submitting an application to ensure that the supervisor is in agreement with the scientific aspects contained in the application and, the proposed work plan for completion of the degree.
  • The submission deadline for applicants is 29 July 2016 for funding in 2017.
  • The Designated Authority (DA) closing date for validations is 12 August 2016. Please consult your Research Office or Postgraduate Office for your institutions internal closing date, to ensure validation by institutional DAs prior to submission to the NRF.
