Swedish Institute’s Creative Force Programme 2016

The Creative Force programme supports collaborative projects with the overall objective to strengthen democratic structures and freedom of expression in the target countries. These aims shall be achieved through mutual learning processes and sustainable networks between institutions and agents of change who work with either culture or the media to bring about change.

Two types of funding

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants may be Swedish civil society organisations, foundations, public sector agencies, private sector agencies or other professional actors.

Three geographic areas

MENA Region:

Eligible Countries

AFRICA: Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia
MENA: Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen
SOUTH ASIA: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan

Target Groups:

The primary target group for the Creative Force programme are agents of change and opinion-makers who, through culture or the media, work with creative processes to strengthen democratisation and human rights.

These can be organisations and groups of cultural actors and journalists, other actors within media organisations as well as human rights defenders and political activists, women’s rights groups, youth organisations or other relevant actors who work to increase democratisation and freedom of expression.

The final beneficiaries of Creative Force initiatives are groups and/or individuals who are directly positively influenced by the project outcomes, especially vulnerable groups in the programme countries and regions: women, children and youth as well as minority groups in especially vulnerable positions such as LGBTQ individuals or people with disabilities.

Fill in and save the documents for the appropriate region and type of funding as specified below. Application documents are in English. Please note that it is always the Swedish organisation that submits the application to the Swedish Institute.

2015 Swedish Institute Creative Force Programme for collaborative initiatives, Sweden

Application Deadline: May 18 2015 – Second Round Funding

The Creative Force programme provides funding for collaborative initiatives involving organisations in Sweden and in the regions specified below. Projects should aim to promote human rights, transparency and democracy with the aid of initiatives that use either culture or the media as a method for achieving change.

Two types of funding

Who can apply?

  • Applicants may be Swedish civil society organisations, foundations, public sector agencies, private sector agencies or other professional actors.
  • It is always the Swedish partner in a collaboration who is formally responsible for the application and legally accountable to the Swedish Institute.

Target groups

The primary target group for Creative Force funding are actors for change and opinion-makers who work with either culture or the media. These should work with creative processes which will help to achieve the programme objectives.

The final beneficiaries of Creative Force initiatives are groups/individuals who are directly positively influenced by the project outcomes.

Which countries are included in the region?

Creative Force AfricaL Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Creative Force Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen.

What types of project does SI support?

  • Creative Force Africa aims to promote freedom of speech and the development of democratic structures, with particular emphasis on women’s rights.
  • These aims shall be achieved via mutual learning processes and sustainable networks between actors in Sweden and the programme countries listed below who use either culture or the media as methods to bring about change.

Types of funding and duration

Creative Force Africa offers two types of funding:

  • Seed funding is available for such purposes as small-scale projects, project start-ups and planning trips. There are two calls for seed funding per year. Projects must be completed and final reports submitted by 28 February 2016.
  • The maximum amount that can be applied for is SEK 100,000.
  • Funding for Collaborative projects is intended for larger-scale initiatives. There is one call for funding per year. Information about the next call will be published here later in the year (2015).

The application deadlines:

In 2015 there will be two calls for funding with deadlines on 21 January and 15 May.

The application period begins six weeks before each respective deadline

The Creative Force programme provides funding for collaborative projects involving organisations in Sweden and in the countries specified below. Projects should aim to promote human rights, transparency and democracy with the aid of initiatives in the fields of culture and the media.

Applicants may be civil society organisations, foundations, public sector agencies, private sector agencies or other professional actors. Private individuals may not apply for funding under the programme.

The Creative Force programme comprises five geographic areas:

Creative Force Africa

Creative Force Africa aims to promote freedom of speech and the development of democratic structures, with particular emphasis on women’s rights. These aims shall be achieved via mutual learning processes and sustainable networks between actors in the fields of culture and the media in Sweden

Priority Countries:

Projects may be carried out in Sweden and/or in one or more of the programme countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe).

Priority will be given to initiatives that are carried out in programme countries and to regional collaborations.

Target group

The primary target group for Creative Force funding are actors for change and opinion-makers in the fields of culture and the media.

Types of funding and duration

Creative Force Africa offers two types of funding:

  • Seed funding is available for such purposes as contact visits, exchanges of experts and planning trips. There are two calls for seed funding per year. Maximum project duration is from the application deadline until 31/12 of the same year. The maximum amount that can be applied for is SEK 100,000.
  • Funding for Collaborative projects is intended for larger-scale initiatives. In 2015 the maximum project duration is from the application deadline until 31/12. Applications are accepted in the range SEK 100,000 − SEK 300,000
