Applications for the Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2018/2019 for study in the United Kingdom are now being accepted

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is one of the largest and most prestigious international scholarship schemes in the world. Since it was established in 1959, 35,000 individuals have held a Commonwealth Scholarship or Fellowship – 27,000 of them were funded by the UK government, through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC).
Commonwealth PhD Scholarships are for candidates from low and middle income Commonwealth countries, for full-time doctoral study at a UK university.
Funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), Commonwealth PhD Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development, and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.
Purpose:
  • To enhance individual teaching and research capacity leading to increased institutional capacity in academic and other sectors in Commonwealth countries, and to contribute to UK higher education and research by attracting high-calibre international candidates and encouraging links and collaboration.
Intended beneficiaries:
  • High-quality graduates who have the potential to become influential leaders, teachers, or researchers in their home countries, and whose proposed research topic has been described to the satisfaction of the selection committee as having a developmental and leadership focus
ELIGIBILITY
To apply for these scholarships, you must:
  • Be a citizen of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person
  • Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2018
  • By October 2018, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard, or a second class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree)
  • NOT be registered for a PhD, or an MPhil leading to a PhD, at a UK university before September/October 2018
  • Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship

Scholarship Worth:
Each scholarship provides:
  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (the CSC will not reimburse the cost of fares for dependants, nor usually the cost of journeys made before your award is finally confirmed)
  • Approved tuition fees
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,065 per month, or £1,306 per month for those at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2017-2018 levels)
  • Warm clothing allowance, where applicable
  • Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas
  • Provision towards the cost of fieldwork undertaken overseas (usually the cost of one economy class return airfare to your fieldwork location), where approved
  • Paid mid-term visit (airfare) to your home country (unless you have claimed (or intend to claim) spouse and/or child allowances during your scholarship, or have received a return airfare to your home country for fieldwork)
  • Family allowances, as follows:
  • Spouse allowance of £229 per month if you and your spouse are living together at the same address in the UK (unless your spouse is also in receipt of a scholarship; other conditions also apply)
  • Child allowance of £229 per month for the first child, and £112 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your spouse and children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK
  • If you are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of £458 per month for the first child, and £112 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK
HOW TO APPLY
  • You should apply to study at a UK university which has a part funding agreement with the CSC. Part funding agreements are at the discretion of individual universities.   • You must apply to one of the following nominating bodies in the first instance – the CSC does not accept direct applications for these scholarships:
  • National nominating agencies – this is the main route of application. For a full list including contact details, visit http://cscuk.dfid.gov.uk/apply/national-nominating-agencies
  • Selected universities/university bodies, which can nominate their own academic staff. For a full list, visit http://cscuk.dfid.gov.uk/apply/phd-scholarships-low-middle-income-countries/nominating-universities
  • Selected non-governmental organisations and charitable bodies. For a full list, visit http://cscuk.dfid.gov.uk/apply/phd-scholarships-low-middle-income-countries/nominating-ngos
  • All applications must be made through one of these nominating bodies. Each nominating body is responsible for its own selection process.
  • You must check with your nominating body for their specific advice and rules for applying, and for their own closing date for applications.
  • The CSC does not impose any age limit on applicants, but nominating bodies may do so in line with their own priorities.
  • You must make your application using the CSC’s Electronic Application System (EAS), in addition to any other application that you are required to complete by your nominating body.   • Your application must be submitted to and endorsed by one of the approved nominating bodies listed above. The CSC will not accept any applications that are not submitted via the EAS.
  • All applications, including full transcripts detailing all your higher education qualifications, must be submitted by 23.59 (GMT) on 22 February 2018 at the latest.
  • You are advised to complete and submit your application as soon as possible, as the EAS will be very busy in the days leading up to the application deadline.
  • You must provide the following supporting documentation, which must be received by the CSC by 23.59 (GMT) on 22 March 2018 in order for your application to be eligible for consideration:
  • References from at least two individuals
  • Supporting statement from a proposed supervisor in the UK from at least one of the institutions named on your application form
  • Awards made by the CSC are subject to the ongoing endorsement of the nominating body. The CSC cannot accept nominations for these scholarships from other organisations or applications directly from individuals; such applications will not be acknowledged.
  • Universities or other organisations that wish to be invited to nominate candidates for these scholarships should write to the Executive Secretary, Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK, Woburn House, 20-24 Tavistock Square, London WC1H 9HF, UK.

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships 2016 for study in the United Kingdom (Fully Funded)

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarships support candidates to study Master’s degree courses that are either offered in partnership with universities in developing countries, or delivered directly by UK institutions.

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is one of the largest and most prestigious scholarship schemes for international study in the world. Since it was established in 1959, around 30,000 individuals have benefited – 25,000 of them have held awards funded by the UK government, managed by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC).

Eligibility

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

  • Be a citizen of a developing Commonwealth country, refugee, or British protected person
  • Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country
  • Hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) standard. A lower qualification and sufficient relevant experience may be considered in certain cases

Scholarship Worth:

  • All expressions of interest must meet the CSC’s overall funding cap of £18,000 per scholarship. This figure must cover all elements of the award, including tuition fees, applicable partnership development costs, and a UK residential programme.
  • If the actual costs of delivering the course are higher than £18,000, the university must clearly identify the source of top-up funding in its expression of interest, and any subsequent proposal.
  • Funding is available for five years from the start of an approved programme.

HOW TO APPLY
The application cycle for Distance Learning Scholarships has three stages:
1. The CSC invites expressions of interest from UK universities for Distance Learning Scholarships (August-September).
2. The CSC invites formal proposals from shortlisted universities, deciding which courses to select and how many scholarships to allocate to each course (November-January).
3. The CSC selects candidates for Distance Learning Scholarships from a shortlist of candidates nominated by each university following its own recruitment process (February-

2016 New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships 2016 for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD) in New Zealand Universities (Fully Funded)

As part of the CSFP programme, New Zealand offers New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships to candidates from developing Commonwealth countries for postgraduate study (Masters and PhD) in New Zealand universities on a contestable basis. New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are highly competitive and for top level graduates.

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are funded by the New Zealand Aid Programme and managed and managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). The selection process in New Zealand is managed by Universities New Zealand.

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is an international programme under which member governments offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth countries.

The CSFP was established at the first Commonwealth education conference in 1959 and is reviewed by education ministers at their triennial meetings. The CSFP is the only scholarship scheme in the world to receive such high-level recognition.

Qualification types

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are available for the following postgraduate qualifications:

  • Masters Degree (1 – 2 years)
  • PhD (up to 3.5 years)

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships

Universities New Zealand is managing the application and selection process for the New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships:

– applications in 2016 for tenure from 2017.

Scholarships may be held at one of the eight universities in New Zealand:

  • the University of Auckland
  • Auckland University of Technology
  • Waikato University
  • Massey University
  • Victoria University of Wellington
  • Canterbury University
  • Lincoln University
  • Otago University

Scholarships are for postgraduate study at Masters or PhD level only.

Eligibility

Candidates must meet all the scholarship eligibility criteria including:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing your scholarship.
  • Be a citizen of the country from which you are applying for a scholarship and have resided in that country for at least the last two years.
  • Agree to return to your home country for a minimum of two years on completion of the scholarship.

Preferences

  • Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate strong academic ability, leadership qualities, and a commitment to the development of their home country.
  • Preference is also given to candidates who are 39 years of age or younger at the time of commencing their scholarship.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who apply to study in academic disciplines relating to priority sectors.

How to apply

If you would like to apply for a New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship please note the following:

You may only apply using the New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship Application form as a hard copy.  Please note that applicants are unable to apply online.  You must submit your application to your local Nominating Agency.

The following steps can only be completed once the online application portal opens on 1 February 2016.

Step One: Confirm your eligibility

Before you start your application, check your eligibility against the requirements.

Step Two: Decide the type of institution and qualification

Step Three: Apply for an Offer of Place

Once you have selected your institution and qualification, you will need to seek an offer of place at one of our New Zealand institutions.  Please refer to the list of New Zealand institutions for further information here.

Step Four: Apply for a New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship

Please submit your completed application to the Nominating Agency in your home country, including your offer of place. Failure to do so will result in your application being deemed ineligible. It is important to note that applications sent directly to MFAT or Universities New Zealand will be deemed ineligible.

The Nominating Agency in your country will then nominate the two strongest applications to be forwarded to Universities New Zealand to be assessed against all other nominated New Zealand Commonwealth applications from across the Commonwealth.

Documentation required

When submitting your New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarship application to your local Nominating Agency you must attach the following official documentation:

1. One of the following:

  • Verified copy of passport
  • Verified copy of birth certificate
  • Verified copy of other official government issued ID

2. Copy of Offer of Place from New Zealand institution

3. Verified copies of relevant academic transcripts

4. Verified copies of relevant completion certificates

5. Contact details of most recent employer and two most relevant other employers

6. A non-verified copy of an IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) which will be verified by MFAT online using the TRF Verification Service OR An original copy of a TOEFL test result form.  Whichever is provided it must have been completed in the last 24 months.

2016 Commonwealth Shared Scholarships for Students from Developing Countries to study in the United Kingdom

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is one of the largest and most prestigious scholarship schemes for international study in the world. Since it was established in 1959, around 30,000 individuals have benefited – 25,000 of them have held awards funded by the UK government, managed by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC).

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarships is offered by the CSC for citizens of developing Commonwealth countries in 2016. These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID), with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth

Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are offered for selected taught Master’s courses, and are usually tenable for one year only. These scholarships do not cover undergraduate courses, PhD study, or any pre-sessional English language teaching.

Eligibility

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

  • Be a Commonwealth citizen, refugee, or British protected person
  • Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country
  • Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2016
  • By August 2016, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard
  • Not have studied or worked for one (academic) year or more in a developed country
  • Be unable, either yourself or through your family, to pay to study in the UK
Intended beneficiaries:
  • High-quality postgraduate students who have not studied extensively overseas before, who would not otherwise have the opportunity to study in the UK, and who have the potential to enhance the development of their home countries with the knowledge and leadership skills they acquire.

Scholarship Worth:

Shared Scholarships are jointly funded by the CSC and participating UK universities. Each Scholarship provides:
  • Approved airfare from your home country to the UK and return at the end of your award (arranged by the university; funded by the CSC)
  • Approved tuition and examination fees (funded by the CSC)
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,034 per month, or £1,268 per month for those studying at universities in the London metropolitan area (rates quoted at 2015-2016 levels) (paid and funded by the university)
  • Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a dissertation, where applicable (claimed from and paid by the university; funded by the CSC)
  • Warm clothing allowance and visa reimbursement, where applicable (paid and funded by the university)
  • Study travel grant towards the costs of study-related travel within the UK or overseas (claimed from and paid by the university; funded by the CSC)
  • Excess baggage allowance, up to an annual approved limit, when returning home (claimed from and paid by the university; funded by the CSC)
  • No additional allowances are available for spouses or other dependants.

How to Apply

  • You should apply to study an eligible Master’s course at a UK university that is participating in the Shared Scholarship scheme. Here is a list of participating universities and eligible courses.
  • You must make your application using the CSC’s Electronic Application System (EAS) – information on how to use the EAS, including detailed guides, is available at http://bit.ly/cscuk-shared-scholarship
  • Before applying, you must check with your UK university for their specific advice and rules for applying, and for their own closing date for applications. Here is a list of contact details
  • You can apply for more than one course and/or to more than one university, but you may only accept one offer of a Shared Scholarship. The CSC will not accept any applications that are not submitted via the EAS to your UK university or applications directly from individuals.
  • All applications must be submitted by 23.59 (BST) on 1 April 2016 at the latest. Each university has its own closing date for applications, and most fall before 1 April 2016. You must submit your application by the date advised by your UK university.
