2016 Children’s Prize ($USD 250,000 for Saving Children’s Live)

The 2016 Children’s Prize seeks the best and most effective project that proposes to save  the greatest number of children’s lives with $250,000. It’s a contest to find the best plan for directly and quickly saving children’s lives. The winner will receive funding to carry out the plan they propose.

The Children’s Prize was created by Ted Caplow, who feels that the death of a child is a special tragedy, considering the potential years of life lost, the innocence of the victims, and the impact on families.

There is abundant data and research that is centered around children under five, so it is convenient to select this bracket. For example, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 aims to end preventable deaths of newborns and under-5 children by 2030.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The Children’s Prize is available to anyone. Proposals will be accepted from non-profits (charities), for profits (companies), government programs, academic institutions, and individuals aged 18 years or older.
  • However, the prize funds may only be used for charitable purposes, as specified in the contest goals.

Prize:

  • The 2016 Children’s Prize will award $250,000 to one winner.
  • The prize will be awarded December 10, 2016.

The 2015 Children’s Prize seeks the best and most effective project that proposes to save the greatest number of children’s lives with $250,000.

The Children’s Prize is an open web-based competition focused on under-five child survival with eligibility extending to everyone, individuals and organizations, across the world. Through our entrepreneurial and scientific approaches we are ensuring that more children under the age of five survive and thrive.

The 2015 Children’s Prize seeks the best and most effective project that proposes to save the greatest number of children’s lives.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Anyone can apply.
  • Proposals will be accepted from non-profits (charities), for profits (companies), government programs, academic institutions, and individuals aged 18 years or older.
  • The Children’s Prize is available to anyone worldwide that:
  • works with or for children,
  • could save more children’s lives with more funding,
  • could save those lives within two years, and
  • has an excellent but realistic plan that includes an impact assessment.

Entries will be evaluated based on the:

  • ability to impact rates within a child mortality indicator (U5MR, IMR, NMR, etc.),
  • effectiveness, innovation and scalability of the intervention approach within global health,
  • feasibility of the proposed lives-saved estimate,
  • probability of success,
  • ease of verification, and
  • inclusion of an impact assessment.

Each proposal submitted must clearly define the specific child mortality indicator it will impact. For example, indicators may include:

  • Under Five Mortality Rate (U5MR): also referred to as Child Mortality Rate, is the probability of dying between birth and exactly five years of age expressed as per 1,000 live births.
  • Infant Mortality Rate (IMR): is the probability of dying between birth and exactly one year of age expressed as per 1,000 live births.
  • Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR): is the probability of dying before reaching 28 days of age, expressed as per 1,000 live births in a given year.
  • Perinatal Mortality Rate  (PMR): is the number of perinatal deaths (defined as a stillbirth or an early neonatal death) over the total number of births (stillbirths and live births) per 1,000 total births.

Timeline:

June
Round 1 closes. Review Period. Approximately 10-20% of Round 1 entries will be invited to provide additional information and materials.

July
Round 2 opens and is by invitation only.

August-September
Round 2 closes. Review period. Approximately 10-20% of Round 2 applications will be judged by the expert committee.

 October
Judging Committee convenes in Miami.

December
Winner announced.

2014 DATA FOR LIFE PRIZE WILL AWARD $100,000 TO SUPPORT SCIENTIFIC EVALUATION OF EFFORTS TO SAVE CHILDREN’S LIVES

Recognizing that nearly 18,000 children under five die from preventable causes every day, the Children’s Prize works outside of traditional channels of foreign aid and philanthropy to uncover and fund the most impactful, credible, and cost-effective action plans for reducing child mortality.

By leveraging the power of new media, the Children’s Prize allows individuals and organizations of any size or type from anywhere in the world to compete on a level playing field. The inaugural Children’s Prize, named after the Caplow family in honor of their newborn triplets, was a $1 million grant won last year by Dr. Anita Zaidi, a Pakistani physician working to sharply reduce some of the world’s highest rates of neonatal mortality, found in the impoverished suburbs of Karachi.

The Children’s Prize was founded by Ted Caplow, an engineer and social enterprise entrepreneur with a record of developing groundbreaking projects focused on renewable energy, water conservation, and sustainable agriculture.

Reflecting that many humanitarian organizations fighting child mortality lack the means to quantitatively assess the impact of their work. The Data for Life prize invites applicants to submit a successful but under-recognized life-saving intervention for children under five that deserves more rigorous study. Two winners will receive $50,000 each to fund meticulous, independent, year-long field studies of their chosen intervention.

THE PROBLEM:

Nearly 7 million children under the age of five dying every year, and there is a scarcity of data to tell us which interventions save the most lives.


THE CHALLENGE:

Propose a successful but under-recognized life-saving intervention for children under five that deserves more rigorous study.Design a scientific study with a budget of $50,000 that will validate a previously unproven but highly effective intervention to reduce child mortality, demonstrating the potential to save a large number of additional lives through scale up.

WHO CAN APPLY: Any person or organization worldwide that:
1) works with or for children
2) currently lacks the means to quantitatively assess the impact of their work
3) can propose a credible, independent, year-long field study of a chosen intervention
4) can propose a study with broad implications and is scalable, replicable, modular and discreet in design
