The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity Programme 2025/2026 for social-change leaders (Fully Funded study at London School of Economics and Political Science)

Application Deadline:  10 January 2025. 

Applications are now open for the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity (AFSEE) programme for social-change leaders who are working to tackle inequality. Policymakers, researchers, activists, practitioners, artists, and movement-builders from around the world are invited to apply to the innovative, fully-funded, and inequalities-focused fellowship programme based at the International Inequalities Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Requirements

  • Candidates who live in the Global South (although this factor will never be considered in isolation)
  • Candidates who come from marginalised and/or historically underrepresented groups such as Black, Latinx/o/a/e, Indigenous, Asian, Arab, Middle Eastern, Pacific Islander, refugee, biracial, multiracial, female-identifying, the disability community, LGBTQIA+ etc. 
  • Candidates who do not otherwise have the resources to finance their participation in activities such as the AFSEE Fellowship and/or have not already had significant access to fellowships or scholarships.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Applicants to the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme must be able to demonstrate their ability to meet the following eligibility criteria.

Residential Fellows

  1. Applicants must qualify for admission to the London School of Economics’ MSc in Inequalities and Social Science. These requirements include a 2:1 degree or equivalent in any discipline. A background in social science and/or work experience in the social policy field are advantageous but not essential. Please refer to the programme page for full details.
  2. Applicants must meet LSE’s standard English Language Requirement.
  3. Applicants must have at least 7 years of experience demonstrating courage, care, leadership and commitment in advancing equitable solutions to inequality.

Note: Applicants who have attained a PhD, who have completed an MSc within the past three years, or who are currently studying for a degree, will not normally be considered for the Residential track.

Non-Residential Fellows

  1. Applicants must meet LSE’s standard English Language Requirement.
  2. Applicants must have at least 7 years of experience demonstrating courage, care, leadership and commitment in advancing equitable solutions to inequality.

Note: For the Non-Residential track, we aim to be inclusive and to encourage applications from non-traditional applicants. We therefore welcome applications from both those applicants who hold an undergraduate degree (2:2 and above) and to those who do not hold an undergraduate degree.

Benefits

  • The Residential track of the AFSEE Programme is fully-funded. AFSEE covers full tuition fees for the MSc Inequalities and Social Science course, travel to and from London at the beginning and end of the active fellowship year, and any visa and immigration-related costs. All Residential Fellows will also receive a £23,000 stipend to cover living costs while in London.
  • The Non-Residential track of the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is fully-funded. AFSEE programme covers the cost of the Postgraduate Certificate; all expenses related to travel to and from modules; accommodation and related costs during modules; and any visa fees. All Non-Residential Fellows will also receive up to a £10,000 grant to support the execution of their fellowship project. 

Application Process

  • All applicants must complete an online application through the LSE’s Graduate Application System during the application period.
  • Please make sure you have allowed yourself enough time to complete the application, including providing all the required supporting documents. It can take time to request documents from educational institutions, and many will be closed over the winter break, so we would advise starting the process early. If your application is incomplete when the applications close, it unfortunately will not be considered.  In addition to filling in an application form, you will also need to:

Nominate two referees and make sure that both references have been submitted by the reference deadline (5pm GMT, 17 January 2025).

Upload documents

Upload documents, including your transcripts or a document stating that you do not hold an undergraduate degree; your statement of academic purpose; and your CV.

Meet language requirement

Take necessary steps to prove that you meet the minimum English-language requirements. However, please note that applicants are not required to sit an English-language test before they submit their application.

The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is a transformative experience that emphasises learning, connection and reflection. For both our Residential Fellows and our Non-Residential Fellows, the fellowship journey begins with an immersive year at the London School of Economics and Political Science, centred around key learning Modules. It is an intense and demanding year that requires full commitment from Fellows as they join a community that helps to support, challenge, and deepen their learning and practice.

The fellowship programme offers two tracks: Residential and Non-Residential. Participants in both tracks participate in rigorous academic coursework, leadership and skills development, and practical approaches to fostering social change.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Residential Track

Residential Fellows undertake a full-time, one-year MSc in Inequalities and Social Science at LSE, in addition to participating in the bespoke AFSEE Modules. This is why the Residential track is only suitable for people who are able to dedicate themselves to full-time study for a full academic year.

Residential Fellows are required to relocate to London for the duration of the MSc programme. For the 2024-25 cohort, Residential Fellows will be expected to be resident in London from September 2024.

The MSc in Inequalities and Social Science is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and wide-ranging programme that draws on expertise from leading academics in LSE departments including Sociology, Social Policy, Media and Communications, Economics, Gender, Government, and Methodology. Its core course provides a strong grounding in the study, measurement and structures of inequalities. Additional elective courses, suited to a broad range of interests, are offered.

SUPPORT AND FUNDING

Residential Fellows receive support from a dedicated LSE academic mentor, from the AFSEE Academic Lead through monthly meetings and regular check-ins, with further opportunities for engagement offered throughout the year.

The Residential track of the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is fully-funded. The AFSEE programme covers full tuition fees for the MSc Inequalities and Social Science course, travel to and from London at the beginning and end of the active fellowship year, and any visa and immigration-related costs. All Residential Fellows will also receive a £23,000 stipend to cover living costs while in London.

Non-Residential Track

Non-Residential Fellows are offered a unique opportunity to investigate inequalities over a period of 12 months via a set of distinct, comprehensive AFSEE Modules, and practice-based project work. After successfully completing the active fellowship year, they are awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Social and Economic Equity.

Non-Residential Fellows remain based in their home and professional environments, and travel to attend in-person Modules. Because of the reduced time and location commitment, this fellowship track is ideal for applicants who are unable to take a full year off from their work. However, they will be expected to commit time (around five hours per week) in addition to their Module commitments, for reading, coursework, and project work.

SUPPORT AND FUNDING

  • Each Non-Residential Fellow receives support from a dedicated mentor who has been selected for expertise and experience in the Fellow’s area of focus.
  • The Non-Residential track of the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is fully-funded. AFSEE programme covers the cost of the Postgraduate Certificate; all expenses related to travel to and from modules, accommodation and related costs during modules, and any visa fees. All Non-Residential Fellows will also receive up to a £10,000 grant to support the execution of their fellowship project.

The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity Programme 2023/2024 for social-change leaders (Fully Funded study at London School of Economics and Political Science)

The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is a funded fellowship based at the International Inequalities Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Requirements:

  • Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity Programme are looking for Fellows who are bold and ready to challenge power; who see the bigger picture of how inequalities are playing out; who are imaginative and daring in the way they envision solutions; who bring care and collaboration into their practice; who recognise the significance of lived experience of inequality, and whose own lived experience informs their practice; who focus not on advancing their careers, but on their commitment to changing the world through collective and collaborative approaches.
  • The Fellowship has no lower or upper age limits; however, all applicants must be able to demonstrate 7 to 10 years of real world experience in advancing equitable solutions to inequality.

The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme has two different tracks: Residential and Non-Residential. Members of the Residential track also study the MSc in Inequalities and Social Science at LSE during their active fellowship year. Members of both tracks participate in rigorous academic coursework, as well as sessions on leadership and skills development, and practical approaches to fostering social change. 

Language Requirements

You can meet the language requirements in the following ways:

  • You are a national and resident of Canada or one of the UKVI list of majority English-speaking countries (whose first language is English). If it is not clear elsewhere in your application, please provide an indication that English was the language of instruction in your primary/secondary education or
  • You have successfully completed an undergraduate degree (of at least three years duration), a postgraduate taught degree (of at least one year) or a PhD in one of those countries listed or
  • You have passed a recognised English language test at an appropriate level.

Fellowship Tracks

  • Residential Fellows will undertake a full-time, one-year MSc in Inequalities and Social Science at LSE, in addition to AFSEE Modules. The Residential track is suitable for people who can dedicate themselves to full-time study for a full academic year. Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity are activists, policymakers, researchers, and practitioners who believe inequality can be defeated.

Applications for the 2022-23 Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme are now open. The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is a transformative experience that emphasises learning, connection and reflection.

For both the Residential Fellows and our Non-Residential Fellows, the fellowship journey begins with an immersive year at the London School of Economics and Political Science, centred around four key learning Modules. It is an intense and demanding year that requires full commitment from Fellows as they join a community that helps to support, challenge and deepen their learning and practice.

Fellowship is also a lifelong journey. At the end of their active fellowship year at LSE, Fellows will have the opportunity to build their engagement in the Atlantic Fellows global community, in the company of Senior Fellows from all seven Atlantic Fellows programmes around the world.

The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is a funded fellowship based at the International Inequalities Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science. We are one of seven interconnected Atlantic Fellowships worldwide.

Requirements

Atlantic Fellowship is especially keen to support applicants:

MSC IN INEQUALITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCE

The MSc in Inequalities and Social Science at LSE is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary and wide-ranging programme that draws on expertise from leading academics in LSEs departments including Sociology, Social Policy, Media and Communications, Economics, Gender, Government, and Methodology. Its core course provides a strong grounding in the study, measurement and structures of inequalities. Additional elective courses, suited to a broad range of interests, are offered.

The Residential track of the AFSEE programme provides an intensive learning experience centred on building rigorous, interdisciplinary knowledge in inequalities and research skills. Residential Fellows will focus on improving their understanding and knowledge base in order to go on to lead advances in solutions to inequalities. Residential Fellows are expected to arrive with a clear agenda and plan for applying the knowledge and research skills they will gain through their participation in an immersive academic experience.

AFSEE MODULES

In addition to their commitment to their MSc degree study, Residential Fellows will participate in four AFSEE Modules, alongside Non-Residential Fellows.

SUPPORT AND FUNDING

Residential Fellows receive support from a dedicated LSE academic mentor, from the AFSEE Academic Lead through monthly meetings and regular check-ins, and via further opportunities for engagement offered throughout the year.

The Residential track of the Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is a funded fellowship. The fellowship includes full tuition fees, an £19,o00 stipend to cover living costs while in London, any necessary travel expenses to in-person modules, and travel to and from London at the beginning and end of the active fellowship, including reimbursement of visa fees. 

Modest financial support is available for Fellows who have family care responsibilities. The programme also has a Resilience Fund to which Fellows can apply in the event of emergencies. Further information is available upon request.
