The Association of African Universities (AAU) is calling for 3rd and final year university students who want to undergo a 3-month corporate and industrial internship from June 3rd –August 3rd 2019. Selected interns will work on the projects below:

A. African Research “Bank”Call for Interns

B. African Universities Olympics.

A. AFRICAN RESEARCH “BANK”

The African Research “Bank” is a data repository which houses research needs and problems from industries and other key sectors. The repository provides student researchers with real research problems which inform their choice of topics or problem statement during their research work/project work/thesis and dissertations stage of their academic work. The repository will assist researchers in getting real research problems from industry and other sectors of the economy and help shape their relevant research output.

REQUIREMENT FOR RESEARCH “BANK” INTERNS

Category A: Student Researchers (Undergraduates, Postgraduates)

1. Must be either a 3rd /4th year undergraduate student or a postgraduate student.

2. Must have carried out or assisted in research work before.

3. Must demonstrate a clear understand of research processes

4. Must have the ability to work with teams, analyze and think critically.

5. Must demonstrate dexterity in writing and communication

Responsibilities/Roles

1. Develop concept notes and proposals.

2. Develop tools for data collection.

3. Analyze data for storage.

Call for Volunteers: African University Week 2017 Young Social Media Reporters Programme

The Association of African Universities (AAU) is organising key events to mark the 2017 African University Week. The theme for the African University Week is “AAU@50: Achievements, Challenges and Prospects for Sustainable Development in Africa”. This year the AAU Secretariat will use Social Media with the help of Volunteer Social Media Reporters to create awareness about the African University Week. This innovative approach will harness Social Media to create awareness and engage the Higher Education community electronically through the use of TWITTER, FACEBOOK, YOUTUBE and BLOGGING. This approach aims to generate “noise and excitement” online about Higher Education in Africa and contribute towards the advocacy role of the AAU.

Roles of Young Volunteer Social Media Reporters

  1. Selected Volunteer Social Media Reporters will work online to retweet, like facebook posts, share videos, share pictures, write blog articles and re-post posts related to the African University Week. These volunteers will work online from 23rd October 2017 to 25th November 2017.
  2. The Volunteer Social Media Reporters will be guided on what to tweet. E.g. a schedule of tweets and Facebook posts will be shared with the reporters.
  3. On-Site Volunteer Social Media Reporters will also be selected to support the online campaign and also participate in “onsite social media reporting”.  Physical presence during the events is thus a requirement for onsite Volunteer Social Media Reporters. Hence these Volunteer Social Media Reporters must be in Accra and be able to come to the Secretariat of the Association of African Universities for each event.
  4. The hash tag #AFUniWk will be used to tag all posts that will be posted to enable aggregation and tracking of traffic about the 2017 African University Week and future African University Week Celebrations.
  5. While tweeting or liking posts, Volunteer Social Media Reporters will be encouraged to mention universities in Africa and hopefully create awareness on and promote these universities as well.
  6. All selected Volunteer Social Media Reporters will be expected to follow AAU social media platforms
  7. Team leaders will be selected to assist and channel the efforts of their team members in order to reach their goals.

Objectives of African University Week Celebrations

  1. Create awareness on the importance of Higher Education in Africa
  2. Promote dialogue on how to improve Higher Education in Africa
  3. Celebrate Higher Education Institutions in Africa

Venues for the 2017 African University Week Celebrations

  1. Secretariat of the Association of African Universities, Trinity Road, Next to National Accreditation Board (NAB), East Legon, Accra, Ghana
  2. The African University Week will be celebrated widely on the continent with various universities in Africa hosting events on their campuses to mark the Week.

The Profile of a Young Volunteer Social Media Reporter

  1. Has experience using social media –  at least twitter and facebook
  2. Loves social media and visits these sites daily
  3. Has a smart phone and access to internet
  4. Has a good reputation in social media communities
  5. Understands the importance of hash tags and content aggregation
  6. Appreciates the importance of Higher Education for Africa’s development

Association of African Universities (AAU) Small Grants 2016 for Graduate Theses & Dissertations

The  Association of African Universities (AAU) is pleased to announce the 2016 session of its Small Grants for Theses and Dissertations Programme. In line with the Association’s aim of promoting the core functions of higher education institutions, the Small Grants Programme aims to facilitate timely completion of post graduate research.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants should be post graduate students enrolled in AAU member institutions that are in good standing on payment of their annual subscriptions. Post graduate students who are lecturers in AAU member institutions, and female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Research topics should fall within any of the following broad themes:
    • Agriculture and Food Security
    • Conflict, Peace and Security
    • Environment and Climate
    • Health
    • Higher Education

Restrictions:

  • Small grants research budgets are limited to USD3,500 for PhD students and USD2,000 for Masters students
  • Small grants budgets may not include indirect costs (e.g. accommodation, field trips outside the country where the research is being conducted)

Review Process and Criteria:

  • The review of the applications takes approximately 2 months after the deadline date.
  • Applications will be reviewed based on the following criteria:
    • Relevance (the extent to which the proposed research aligns with the selected theme and addresses African development issues);
    • Innovation (the extent to which the proposed activity suggests and explores creative and original approaches); and
    • Feasibility (whether the project is feasible in terms of the proposed methodology, work plan and budget)
  • Award of grants will be based on merit – i.e. on the strength of the application
  • Applicants will be notified on the status of their applications two months after the expiration of the deadline

ECOWAS Fellowship Programme 2015 Masters & PhD study for ECOWAS citizens (Revised)

The Association of African Universities (AAU) is pleased to announce the 2015 maiden edition of the ECOWAS Fellowship Programme for Masters and PhD (EFP) under the sponsorship of the Economic Commission for West African States (ECOWAS). The Programme seeks to promote capacity building within the ECOWAS 15-member countries by providing full fellowships for training and education for nationals of ECOWAS member states in higher education institutions of ECOWAS.
Eligibility:

The Programme is open to qualified nationals (including graduate students, researchers, lecturers, and staff) of ECOWAS member states who will be admitted for Masters or PhD degree programme at any one of the following three universities:
(a). University of Lagos, Nigeria
(b). University of Ibadan, Nigeria
(c). Université Cheikh Anta Diop, Senegal

A good first degree (at least second class upper division or its equivalent) is required for Masters degree programme. An MPhil degree or its equivalent is required for PhD programme.

Priority will be given to Anglophone nationals who want admission into Francophone institutions, as well as to Francophone nationals who want admission into Anglophone institutions. Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

Disciplines

Applications are invited from all disciplines linked to the fields of strategic importance to the West African region such as:
1.    Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM);
2.    Earth and Life Sciences;
3.    Health including maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, etc.;
4.    Agriculture, Food Security and related disciplines
5.    History of Africa
6.    Information technology; and
7.    Gender issues.

Fellowship Worth:

  • The ECOWAS Fellowship Programme (EFP) is a full scholarship intended to cater for each fellow’s costs of living, tuition fees, visas, travel, insurance and thesis research.
  • In this respect, ECOWAS will pay the tuition fees directly to the institutions and provide a monthly stipend of US$600 per Masters student and US$800 per PhD student to cover all other expenses for the duration of the degree programme.

Qualified candidates will be admitted to one of the three institutions mentioned above. Please ensure that the institution that you have selected offers the course you have chosen.  All the three universities provide information about their degree programmes on their websites.

Applicants that are submitting applications in response to the 2015 ECOWAS call are hereby informed that an online application form has been created to facilitate the application process.
