2021 AAAS-TWAS Course on Science Diplomacy.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Washington, DC, USA, and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Trieste, Italy, are seeking candidates to participate in the AAAS-TWAS Course on Science Diplomacy to be held online from 30 August to 3 September 2021.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Washington DC, USA, and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Trieste, Italy, are seeking candidates to participate in the seventh annual summer course on science diplomacy to be held from 30 August to 3 September 2021. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this is the second year the workshop will be held virtually.

The workshop will take place as follows:

  • 27 August (Friday): Social ‘Meet & greet’ session (optional)
  • 30-31 August (Monday-Tuesday) and 2-3 September (Thursday – Friday): workshop sessions
  • 1 September (Wednesday): offline breakout sessions

The AAAS-TWAS Science Diplomacy training programme was established in 2014 to expose scientists, policymakers, diplomats and other interested stakeholders and institutions to science diplomacy concepts, explore key contemporary international policy issues relating to science, technology, environment and health, and build a skillset to allow for careers at the intersection of science and diplomacy. Over the past years, we have trained over two hundred emerging leaders from more than 50 countries to address science diplomacy from global and regional perspectives. 

PARTICIPANTS

To strengthen the connection between scientists and governmental officials, policymakers and diplomats, applications to attend the course are being invited from ‘participant pairs’. Both participants in the participant pair should be living and/or working in the same country. However, if a co-applicant is from a different country, this will be considered if suitable justification is provided. Priority will be given to developing countries.

The applicants in the ‘participant pair’ should share some common interest in the areas of science, technology and innovation. However, it is not necessary that they work or have been working together in the past.

The ‘participant pair’ will include:

  1. Participant 1: a Young Scientist (40 years or below) whose research and wider engagement has international policymaking implications or applications, and
  2. Participant 2: from the policymaking arena, working on science, technology, and innovation-related matters. This person should belong to one of the following categories:
    – A local or national government official.
    – A policymaker.
    – A diplomat.
    – A representative of an academy of sciences.
    – Civil servant.
    – A representative of a research funding institution.
    – Staff or expert working for and/or with an international (e.g. UN) organization.

If necessary, young scientists applicants are encouraged to check with the head of their home institute for suggestions on a possible suitable co-applicant from the policymaking arena.

The two participants in the participant pair will apply individually, but must confirm their participant pair partner on their application and explain why it is a good partnership. Thus, participant pairs must have agreed in advance about their ‘twinned’ applications.

Please note: Applications that do not identify a participant partner will not be considered. Therefore, it is highly recommended to find a partner co-applicant BEFORE applying.

Alumni of the course will join a global network of young leaders and innovators reaching across borders to address societal challenges and become agents of change in their countries and sectors.

ASSAf-TWAS-AAAS 2020 Regional Workshop on Science Diplomacy (Fully Funded)

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Washington DC, USA, and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Trieste, Italy are seeking candidates to participate in the course on science diplomacy to be held in Trieste, Italy, from 10 to 13 July 2020.

Two trends are becoming clear in the early part of this century; the majority of challenges facing society have a transboundary, international, or global context; and science, technology and their applications underpin the cause or the cure to these challenges. As a result, science and technology are becoming ever more embedded into the foreign policies and international relations of nations.

At the same time, cooperation in science and technology is increasingly benefiting from both the technical and political interactions between states. For example, establishing large-scale infrastructure projects in physics or astronomy requires both scientific exchange and diplomatic agreements. In addition to facilitating cooperative multilateral projects, science cooperation can play an important role in establishing trust and building bridges between nations, even in instances when political relations are strained.

Given the growing role of science and technology in international relations, AAAS and TWAS established a partnership in 2011 focused on science diplomacy training and engagement between the North and the South, including our annual summer course on science diplomacy. 

This course will expose participants to key contemporary international policy issues relating to science, technology, environment and health, while providing an overview of how technical information has contributed to different policy developments and international structures. Another focus of the course will be a better understanding of, and appreciation for, the roles of governments, international organizations and the private sector in complex science-based issues, and how different governance structures are developed to address the needs and involvement of these different stakeholders.

PARTICIPANTS

The workshop is designed for (1) young scientists (below the age of 40) living and working in developing countries whose research and wider engagement has brought them into the international policy-making arena, (2) policymakers and diplomats interested in some of the central science-based themes that might influence their work, (3) research institution administrators and research funders focused on identifying ways to build international networks, and (4) representatives from NGOs and other sectors working at the science-diplomacy interface.

Alumni will join a global network of young leaders and innovators reaching across borders to address societal challenges and become agents of change in their countries and sectors.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS 

  • Travel, accommodation and visa expenses will be provided to the selected participants.
  • Spaces are reserved for a number of young scientists from developing countries (up to the age of 40), as well as scientists and/or government officials, etc, also from developing countries, with more experience in the international policymaking arena (‘science diplomacy ambassadors’).
  • A limited number of spaces for self-funded candidates from any country will also be available.
  • Women are especially encouraged to apply.
  • Deadline for sending applications is 5 March 2020.

ASSAf-TWAS-AAAS 2018 Regional Workshop on Science Diplomacy (Fully Funded to South Africa)

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), The World Academy of Sciences Regional Office for sub-Saharan Africa (TWAS-ROSSA) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) are seeking candidates to participate in the inaugural regional training workshop on science diplomacy to be held in South Africa, from 21 to 25 May 2018.

This training workshop is designed for young scientists (below the age of 40) living and working in sub-Saharan Africa and whose research and wider engagement has brought them into the international policy-making arena, as well as policymakers and diplomats interested in some of the central science-based themes that might influence their work, and representatives from NGOs and other sectors working at the science-diplomacy interface. Applications are invited from young scientists (up to the age of 40), as well as scientists and/or government officials, etc., with more experience in the policymaking arena (‘science diplomacy ambassadors’).

Benefits

  • Economy class flights, local transport and accommodation in South Africa will be covered for selected participants.
  • A limited number of spaces for self-funded and partially-funded candidates will also be available.
  • Applicants are encouraged to seek support from their institutions and to include a plan for how they will apply the newly gained knowledge and skills back in their organisation.

2016 Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Tech-I Competition

Are you a scientist? An entrepreneur? A researcher? An innovator? A student? Are you just someone who has a great idea or startup company and are looking to change the world? Whoever you are, if you have a great idea then GIST Tech-I is for you!

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the U.S. Department of State are pleased to announce the launch of the 2016 GIST (Global Innovation through Science and Technology) Technology Idea (Tech-I) Competition.

Tech-I is part of the GIST Initiative and an annual global pitch competition which seeks to identify and select, train, and encourage exciting young scientists, engineers, and great minds to build businesses around the world. This year citizens from 135 countries and emerging economies spanning Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America are eligible to apply with an innovative science and technology idea or startup in any sector.

The GIST Tech-I Competition is an annual competition for science and technology entrepreneurs from emerging economies worldwide. Aspiring innovators submit their ideas and startups online in an application consisting of an executive summary and promotional video.

Their applications are then reviewed by experts and voted on by the global voting public in order to determine the finalists. Up to thirty finalists receive a trip to the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), this year in Silicon Valley, to showcase their ventures and to receive intensive training. GIST Tech-I winners, selected by experts at the GES, win prizes, and receive one-on-one mentorship and training.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The GIST Tech-I competition is open to everyone between the ages of 18 to 40 years old who has either an idea or a startup.
  • Your idea or startup can be an invention, a product, a service, an app, any combination of these, or something entirely unique.
  • Your idea can be in any sector whether it be agriculture, ICT, health, energy, or even aerospace!

The GIST Tech-I Competition is designed to encourage and support technology and science entrepreneurs to launch and/or grow a company through:

  • Training and mentorship with successful entrepreneurs, scientists, angel investors, and venture capitalists
  • Networking opportunities
  • Access to capital through networking opportunities
  • Prizes to support your entrepreneurship goals
  • National and international visibility for your idea or enterprise

How to Apply:

  • Applicants are required to submit a short summary of their product, research, service, or concept, followed by a larger 750-word executive summary describing the proposed work and the science and technology behind it.
  • Applicants will also provide a 90-second promotional pitch video to showcase their innovation.

Benefits:

  • Up to 100 applicants will be selected as semi-finalists who will then have their pitch videos featured online and voted on by the public.
  • These votes will help to select up to thirty finalists who will pitch their ventures to a global audience at the 2016 Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Silicon Valley, California.
  • During this internationally prestigious event, these amazing up-and-coming innovators will receive intensive skills training, mentorship, and networking access to global leaders in their fields. Winners of GIST Tech-I will receive seed capital prizes.
  • All finalists will receive up to three months of mentoring following the finals.
