Call for Coordinator and Resource Persons: 6th African World Heritage Youth Forum 2022

The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) was created in 2006 to support the effective conservation and protection of cultural and natural heritage of outstanding universal value in Africa. The main objective of AWHF is to address the challenges faced by African State Parties in the implementation of the 1972 Convention, specifically, the underrepresentation of African sites on the World Heritage List and the insufficient conservation and management of these sites.

The 5th of May marks African World Heritage Day, an international day proclaimed by UNESCO Member States in November 2015 to celebrate the exceptional cultural and natural heritage of the African continent. Since 2016, as a build-up to the African World Heritage Day, young people (i.e. individuals aged 18 to 35) from all over the African continent come together in the African World Heritage Youth Forum to discuss and debate their involvement in the conservation, management, and promotion of World Heritage. The African World Heritage Youth Forum target motivated, active, and driven African youth interested in engaging in a World Heritage network and eager to implement the outcomes of the Youth Forum in their home countries.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must fulfil the following requirements:
• African citizen between the ages: 26- 35;
• Minimum requirements: a post-secondary certified training and/or qualification;
• Fluency in French (being the working language of the Forum) and ability to communicate in English;
• Available for the entire duration of the Forum.
• Experienced in the field of World Heritage; working on conservation and promotion of heritage in their regular activities, along with other young people.
• Ability to write reports.
• Personal attributes: motivated, active and driven individuals interested in learning how to assess the viability, feasibility, and desirability of social business ideas while engaging in a World Heritage network of young Africans eager to implement the outcomes of the forum in their home countries.

2020 African World Heritage Fund Conservation /Moses Mapesa Research Grant

The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) is an intergovernmental organization created in 2006 to support the effective conservation and promotion of cultural and natural heritage of outstanding universal value in Africa. The main objective of the AWHF is to address the challenges faced by African State Parties in the implementation of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, specifically, the underrepresentation of African sites on the World Heritage List and the insufficient conservation and management of these sites. 2. Conservation Grants

Each year, AWHF provides conservation grants to African State Parties to implement projects and activities which focus on improving the sustainability and state of conservation of World Heritage

3. Deadline for submission

The deadline for submission – 16.00 (GMT) on 31 July 2020. However, applicants are highly encouraged to submit their proposals prior to the deadline. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.

B. Call for Applications – Moses Mapesa Research Grant

Closing date: 31 July 2020

The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) is pleased to announce the Moses Mapesa1 Research Grant to support African Doctoral and Masters Students in the field of natural and cultural heritage. The AWHF was launched in 2006 in South Africa to support African State Parties in implementation of the UNESCO Convention of 1972 concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (World Heritage Convention). Please view our website (www.awhf.net) for full information. This research grant seeks to further research (particularly supporting fieldwork) on World Heritage and tentative listed sites in Africa.

 1-Eligibility

The call is open to students who are:

– Currently or will be registered in 2021 in a Doctoral or Masters programme (Masters 2 for Francophone countries) at an African university and conducting dissertation research in the field of either natural or cultural heritage;

– Fluent in English, French or Portuguese;

– Citizens of an African Union Member State which is party to the World Heritage Convention.

Call for Proposals: 2017 AFRICAN WORLD HERITAGE FUND

The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) is an intergovernmental organization created in 2006 to support the effective conservation and protection of cultural and natural heritage of outstanding universal value in Africa. The main objective of the AWHF is to address the challenges faced by African State Parties in the implementation of the 1972 Convention, specifically, the under representation of African sites on the World Heritage List and the insufficient conservation and management of these sites.
Conservation Grants
  • Each year AWHF provide conservation grants to African State Parties to implement projects and activities which focus on improving the State of Conservation of World Heritage properties.

Eligibility

  • Countries/Region–Africa
  • Projects activities are restricted to World Heritage Sites as declared by UNESCO.
  • Project proposals MUST address challenges affecting the State of conservation of selected World Heritage property.
Who can apply
  • Government institutions involved in the management and protection of World Heritage Sites.
  • The application must be approved by Head/Director of heritage institution/organization accompanied by a cover letter endorsing the project.
Duration
The projects MUST be implemented within 12 months.
Budget
a) AWHF grant will only cover direct costs related to the project activities.
b) Applicants should provide detailed budget in US$ for every activity to be implemented;
c) Applicants should indicate the State Parties’ contribution to the project.

Six Months Internship Opportunities at African World Heritage Fund, South Africa and Ecole du Patrimoine Africain Benin (Fully Funded)

Two internships will run in 2015,

AWHF was launched in 2006 to support African State Parties in implementing the UNESCO Convention on the protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

EPA ( L’Ecole du Patrimoine Africain)  was established in 1998 and is a post-graduate university institution specialised in the preservation and promotion of both tangible and intangible heritage.

Two interns will be selected to take part in 2 separate internships.

Applicants include students (graduate), professionals or members of natural/cultural heritage and academic institutions (not necessarily within the heritage sector).

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be 30 years of age or below.
  • The project is open to participants from all African countries.
  • Applicants are required to be competent in either English or French, bilingualism is preferable (English/French) and knowledge of Arabic or Portuguese can be an advantage.
  • Eligible female practitioners are encouraged to apply.

Objectives of the internship

  • Provide an opportunity for young African professionals to gain regional experience in
    international heritage organisations.
  • Build capacity and enhance skills in heritage conservation and management for both heritage
    professionals and heritage institutions.
  • Establish an African/international support network for management of cultural/natural heritage
    in order to build the institutional capacity needed to implement the Convention
  • Support the successful implementation of the programme

Expected outcomes

  • The interns have gained experience and knowledge in heritage management and in the
    implementation of projects.
  • A programme and internship report produced by the intern.

Structure of the internship

The internship will be 6 months and be structured as follows:

  • Interns will be mainly based at the work place of the institutions to gain experience in the
    structure and dynamic of heritage institutions and to support the implementation of the
    programme initiatives.
  • There will be a degree of field based learning through site visits of World Heritage Properties
    and/or during the implementation of programme initiatives.
  • The internship system will combine theory and practice in order for interns to get as much
    exposure as possible.

2. A signed letter of recommendation from applicant’s university or administrative authority/supervisor;
3. A letter of motivation by the applicant (1 page);
4. Applicant’s updated curriculum vitae (3 pages maximum).
