African Union Kwame Nkrumah Awards for Scientific Excellence (AUKNASE): Continental & Regional Awards 2018 Edition

The African Union Commission is committed to ensure that science, technology and innovation contribute to our sustainable development efforts. The Constitutive Act, establishing the African Union, recognizes the need to advance the development of Africa by promoting research in all fields, and in science and technology in particular.
The Commission, through its Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology implements a strategic science and technology development programme through the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy (STISA-2024), aimed at contributing to the wellbeing and improved quality of life for the African citizens as articulated in the African Union Agenda 2063. In January 2007, the AU Heads of State and Government “declared 2007 as the launching year for building constituencies and champions for science, technology and innovation in Africa”.
The programme is implemented at national level for young researchers, regional level for women scientists and continental level open to all scientists. The Continental level is the
highest level of the programme. The objective is to give out science awards to top African
scientists for their achievements and valuable discoveries and findings in science, technology and innovation. AUKNASE reflects and underscores a success story and the critical role of
science and technology in the development and integration of Africa. Under this programme
prizes are awarded to top African scientists in each of the following two sectors
(a) Life and Earth Science and innovation; and
(b) Basic Science, Technology and Innovation at the national, regional and
continental levels.
The African Union Kwame Nkrumah Awards for Scientific Excellence Programme is implemented using the set of rules of procedure.
The African Union Kwame Nkrumah Awards for Scientific Excellence Programme (AUKNASE) shall be organized at three levels:
1. Continental Level where two awards of USD 100,000 are given to African pioneer scientists
2. Regional Level where two African women scientists per each of the five
geographical regions of Africa are given USD 20,000 each, and
3. National Level dedicated to young African researchers, where two
prizes are given per country and the value of the prizes is determined by the African Union Commission

Eligibility Requirements:

  • To be eligible for the African Union Scientific Awards nominees shall be African scientists who have made remarkable achievements, demonstrated by number and quality of their publications, number of trained research graduate students, applicability of the scientific work to Africa’s challenges, and its patentability. The award is intended to recognize those who demonstrate excellence in research of relevance to the developmental needs of the continent.
  • Only nationals of the African Union (AU) Member States are eligible to participate in these Awards;
  • Nominees shall be Africans residing in any of the AU member states and can be nominated only for achievements based on work conducted in an African country.
Nominations:
  • Online Nominations ( on the on-line system…..) will be invited from any institution in the continent, from universities, research institutions, professional bodies, academies, industrial establishments, and so on.
  • Nominations may be received from:
  • individuals who may be senior individuals of the same or higher rank than the nominee;
  • Heads of institutions who may have their own formalized procedure for nomination, chairpersons of committees who review the achievements of scientists in their institutions;
  • The nominator is required to show the importance and impact of the research of the applicant. The focus will be on the quality of the work and not necessarily the number of publications. Thenominator should provide a narrative presentation (up to five pages) of the importance, relevance, quality and impact of the work. A full CV as well as 5- 10 copies of best publications are to be submitted together with the Nomination Form.

African Union Commission (AUC) Logo Competition 2017 Global Monitoring for Environment and Security, and Africa (GMES & Africa) – USD 1,000 Prize.

The Global Monitoring for Environment and Security, and Africa (GMES & Africa), is an African Union-European Union joint initiative launched in November 2016 in the Congolese capital, Brazaville. The programme is designed to address the growing needs of African countries to access and use Earth Observation (EO) data for the implementation of sustainable development policies on the continent through the integration and deployment of African requirements and needs in Copernicus Services. This will, in the long run, enable the two continents to jointly solve and address global challenges and contribute to the attainment of their overaching development goals, including the AU Agenda 2063 and the Africa Space Policy and Strategy.

A key component of the implementation of GMES & Africa is visibility and awareness raising, as well as the creation of an effective brand that will enable and drive the programme’s outreach and advocacy.

The African Union Commission hereby launches a logo competition for GMES and Africa. The Call for entries is for African youth on the continent and in the diaspora to submit original artwork and concepts to the Science and Technology Division, under the Department of Human Resources, Science and Technology. Designs may come in any format, whether they are hand-drawn illustrations or well-polished graphic files.

Eligibility:

  • Only African youth on the continent and in the diaspora, between ages 18 and 35 are eligible to submit entries.
  • Females are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • The winner must surrender all rights to the design to the African Union Commission, who will be the sole owner of rights to the design.

Benefits:

  • The winning design by an African youth will receive a US$1000 prize and letter of recognition by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • For quality and adaptability reasons, kindly submit your entry in encapsulated post script.
  • Design entries should include your full name, your age, your nationality (Proof of identity such as a copy of your national ID or passport will be required).
  • Please include a short description in no more than 250 words of how the design represents the subject.
  • Email entries to: [email protected]

Requirements:

AUC are looking for a logo that captures the essence of Earth Observation, in the context of sustainable development in Africa. Entries will be judged for the style, creativity and impact of a design that can be used easily on related materials. AUC are looking for conceptual relish and knack, of the submitted logo.

  • Presentation and format characteristics: Logo should be designed on A4 or A3 white paper/fabric. The logo should be simple to reproduce
  • Explanation: The Logo must be expressive and easy to understand and interpret;
  • Jury: A broad-based jury of experts will be constituted to assess the entries and identify a winner
  • Announcement of Winner: The winner will be announced on …, 2017, through the AUC Website and other media channels

African Union Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Award Programme 2016 for African Scientists.

The African Union Commission launched the prestigious African Union Scientific Award Programme on 9 September 2008. Under this programme prizes are awarded to top African scientists in each of the following two sectors (a) Life and Earth Science; and (b) Basic Science, Technology and Innovation. The objective is to recognize, award and honor outstanding excelling African Scientists women, men alike and younger researchers for their scientific achievements, discoveries and innovations. This raises the profile of science and technology sector in the African Union Member States and Africa as a whole and thus contributing to Africa’s sustainable development, poverty alleviation and integration efforts.
This programme is implemented in three levels as below:
1. The Continental Award which is open to all African scientists is the highest level of the programme and is implemented and managed by the commission. The two successful winners of the award will each receive the current prize of 100,000USD during the Heads of States and Government Summit in January 2017.

2. The Regional Award level is implemented in partnership with the Regional Economic Communities (RECs). It is aimed at promoting the participation of African women in Science, Technology and innovation. The Commission organizes the awards ceremony for the two winners per region who receive the current prize of 20,000USD each.

3. The National Young Scientists Award is implemented by Member States who have signed the implementing agreement with TWAS and the AU Commission. They implement the programme through the National Academy of Science or by the National Research Council according to the signed agreement within a stipulated time-frame. This award is intended for young scientists both women and men and the two winners per country receive the current prize of 2,000USD each. ORGANIZATION OF THE AWARDS

The African Union Kwame Nkrumah Scientific Award Programme shall be organized at
three levels:

  • National;
  • Regional; and
  • Continental

One award per each of the following scientific sector shall be given out at each level:
a) Life and Earth Sciences; and
b) Basic Science, Technology and Innovation
NB: The sectors are defined in 2 above.

The awards to be covered under this scheme are:
(i) AU-TWAS National Young Scientists Award at the National Level;
(ii) African Union Regional Women Scientists Award at the AU Regional Level; and
(iii)Continental Scientific Award at the continental level.

ELIGIBILITY

  •  The African Union Scientific Awards will be awarded to African scientists who have remarkable achievements, demonstrated by number of publications, number of research graduate students applicability of the scientific work to Africa’s challenges, and its patentability
  • Only nationals of the African Union (AU) Member States are eligible to participate in these Awards
  • For the African Union Regional Scientific Award for Women, applicants should have intensively published at least ten (10) SCI publications
  • For the Continental applicants should have at least twenty (20) SCI publications.

Two African Scientists Awarded the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Continental Scientific Awards 2014 Edition

Addis Ababa 31st January 2015 – The African Union Commission has today recognised nationals of the African Union (AU) Member States who have made remarkable achievements in science and technology, in a bid to strengthen the use and development of science and technology in Africa.

This year’s award ceremony took place on Saturday 31st January 2015, during the 24th Session of the AU Assembly of Heads of States and Governments, at the African Union headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Kwame Nkrumah Continental Scientific Awards 2014 were presented on behalf of the Assembly by H.E Robert Mugabe, the President of Republic of Zimbabwe and the Chairperson of the African Union, to Prof. Kofané Timoléon Crépin from Cameroon, recipient of the Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation Award and to Prof. Salim S Abdool Karim from South Africa, recipient of Life and Earth Sciences Award.

H.E Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the African Union Commission in her remarks, said that the Act establishing the Union recognizes the need to embark on an ambitious strategic science and technology development programme, aimed at contributing to socio-economic development of the continent. She recalled that the Assembly adopted Africa’s Ten-year Strategy on Science, Technology and Innovation (STISA-2024), that will contribute to achievements of Agenda 2063. She further reiterated the urgent need for Member States to implement the Assembly decision of 2006 to allocate 1% of GDP to scientific research.

She added that, the Commission has full confidence that the awardees and indeed the African scientists, realize the great responsibility and trust bestowed upon them to ensure that science, technology and innovation drive socio-economic development and improvement of the lives of African citizens through tackling issues of poverty, employment, increasing population, health risks, food insecurity, depleted natural resources, water, energy, environment and climate change among others. She further thanked the Development Partners, particularly the European Commission for their unwavering support for this programme and many more programmes in the Commission. Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Prof. Salim S Abdool Karim expressed optimism that African scientists will make good progress towards a healthier and better Africa in the next decade, particularly in finding solutions to the biggest problems on our continent.
