African Palliative Care Nursing Scholarships 2021 for Nurses and Social Workers.

The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) in partnership with Global Partners in Care (GPIC) in the USA provide a limited number of competitive scholarships each year to nurses and social workers for palliative care training opportunities. APCA and GPIC recognise the important role nurses and social workers play in providing holistic palliative care services. Despite this, the inadequate incorporation of palliative care into the pre-service (undergraduate) training of nurses and social workers, the lack of clear career pathways for those interested in specialising in palliative care and lack of recognition of palliative care qualifications by local ministries of health and education continues to be a challenge. The Palliative Care Education Scholarship Fund for Nurses and Social Workers aims to provide an opportunity for nurses and social workers involved in palliative care provision or those determined to lead the development of such services in their settings to undergo specialist training. Palliative care is a growing area of practice in Africa, and nurses and social workers often feel unprepared to deal with the complex issues it encompasses. Training opportunities through this Fund are expected to enhance skills, knowledge, attitudes, values, methods, and sensitivities needed to work effectively in palliative care with patients, families, health care providers, and the community.

Eligibility:

  • Qualified nurse or social worker with a degree or diploma residing and working in Africa. Other specialties (doctor, clinical officer, etc.) are not eligible for this scholarship.
  • Has obtained a place on a diploma palliative care course in an institution in Africa recognised by APCA. You must already have secured acceptance to a program of study to be considered for a scholarship.
  • Currently licensed in nursing or social work, where applicable
  • Able to obtain full support from your place of work to undertake the course
  • Able to serve your institution of work for at least one year after completion of the training
  • Able to legibly complete the application
  • Willing to provide thank you letter, video testimonial, or Zoom interview with GPIC and APCA in support of future fundraising for the scholarship fund.Please note that preference may be given to applicants who are in their final year of study.

Host Institution(s):

Any recognised institution of higher learning offering palliative care training in Africa. Examples include: Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa/Hospice Africa Uganda, Mildmay Uganda, Nairobi Hospice, Malawi University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kenya Medical Training and University of Cape Town.

Level/Field of study:

All levels of study in palliative care nursing and social work may be considered for scholarships.

Target group:

Nurses and social workers with a desire to specialise in palliative care.

Scholarship value/duration:

Scholarship amount and duration may vary according to the course of study but shall not exceed $2,000 USD

African Palliative Care Education Scholarship Fund 2019 for Nurses & Social Workers

The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) in partnership with Global Partners in Care (GPIC) in the USA provide a limited number of scholarships each year for palliative care training opportunities. APCA and GPIC recognise the important role nurses and social workers play in providing holistic palliative care services for people with life threatening and life limiting illnesses and their families.

Despite this, the inadequate incorporation of palliative care into the pre-service (undergraduate) training for nurses and social workers, the lack of clear career pathways for those interested in specialising in palliative care and lack of recognition of palliative care qualifications by local ministries of health and education continues to be a challenge.

The Palliative Care Education Scholarship Fund for Nurses and Social Workers aims to provide an opportunity for nurses and social workers involved in palliative care provision or those determined to lead the development of such services in their settings to undergo specialist training. This year, APCA UK has joined GPIC to contribute towards the Scholarship Fund.

Host Institution(s):

Any recognised institution of higher learning offering palliative care training in Africa. Examples include: Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa/Hospice Africa Uganda, Mildmay Uganda, Nairobi Hospice/Oxford Brooks University in UK, University of Malawi and University of Cape Town in South Africa.

For Social Workers, study can also be in form of a fellowship/experiential learning from an institution such as a hospice or palliative care programme with well-established social work services. Such a fellowship will be undertaken from a recognised hospice and palliative care institution and APCA will verify eligible programs through the national palliative care association and/or Ministry of Health.

Level/Field of study:

  • Diploma, degree or master level studies in palliative care. For degree and master level studies, those in the final year of study will be given preference.
  • Social workers can also undertake clinical fellowship/experiential learning.

Number Scholarships available:

  • Five (5) scholarships for nurses
  • Four (4) scholarships for social workers

Nurses and social workers

Scholarship value/duration:

  • USD 2,500 each for nurses
  • USD 1,500 each for social workers. This amount will however vary depending to the option of study, either formal course or experiential learning at a hospice.

Eligibility:

  • A qualified nurse or social worker with a degree or diploma residing and working in Africa
  • Has obtained a place on a desired palliative care course in an institution in Africa recognised by APCA or a hospice recognised by the national palliative care association or Ministry of health for social workers who apply to undertake experiential learning.
  • Currently licensed in nursing or social work, where applicable
  • Able to legibly complete the application
  • Able to obtain full support from place of work to undertake the course
  • Able to serve the institution of work for at least a year after completion of the training
  • Willing to provide support towards future fundraising for the scholarship fund. This may be in form of thank you letter, sharing experience through articles, video testimonial, or skype interview with GPIC and APCA.

The African Palliative Care Association Small Grants Programme 2017 for East Africans

The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) in collaboration with the Open Society Initiative For Eastern Africa (OSIEA) have developed a small grants programme to support Strategic Advocacy for Palliative Care and Access to Essential but Controlled Pain Medications initiatives in four East African countries of: Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda.

Strategic advocacy for palliative care aims to influence decision makers to take steps to advance the availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of palliative care. Access to essential controlled medicines is central to the provision of quality palliative care services. The May 2014 World Health Assembly Palliative Care Resolution (WHA 67-19) recognizes that access to palliative care and to essential medicines including opioid analgesics such as morphine for pain control, contributes to the realization of the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health and well-being.[1]

This pilot small grants programme on strategic advocacy and access to controlled medicines will be implemented in 2017 and 2018, building onto strategies discussed at workshops during the 5th International African Palliative Care Conference in August 2016 in Uganda.

All work supported by this programme must directly contribute to the achievement of the goals and objectives of the following global, regional and national goals and objectives for improving access to palliative care and pain relief;

Funding Priorities

The programme aims to influence changes on health, medicines policies and laws to allow for improved access by patients who need palliative care and pain relief services. It is also expected to influence the allocation of local funding towards access to palliative care and controlled medicines. This programme also aims to bring more advocates on board to influence changes on this important public health issue, from other fields of health and human rights.

Specific priority areas for consideration include:

  1. Review and/or change of laws, regulations and public policy to improve access to palliative care and access to controlled medicines;
  2. Development of legal and human rights frameworks for palliative care;
  3. Budget analysis, advocacy and allocation;
  4. Political and public debates on palliative care and access to pain medicines;
  5. Behavioural and attitudinal change including awareness creation among policy makers about palliative care and pain relief;
  6. Improving supply chain mechanisms for controlled medicines, including the engagement of key players and advocates from other fields of health and human rights;
  7. Media engagement;
  8. Strategic communication (reframing palliative care and access to controlled medicines, changing the narrative).
  9. Domestication of global and regional frameworks, strategies and tools aimed at increasing access to palliative care and pain relief.

Applications 

The deadline for applications will be 15th March 2017 and 15th September 2017 respectively.  Applications will be reviewed in April and October 2017. Only applications made by completing the small grants application form for strategic advocacy and access to controlled medicines which is available here will be considered. All applicants must include the following documents with their application:

  • A copy of the registration of your organisation confirming that it is a legal entity in the country of operation.
  • Cover letter from the head of the organisation or relevant authorised person.
  • Reference letter from a relevant local hospice and palliative care organisation, ministry of health or any other credible network organisation e.g. cancer society, hospital, academic institution.
  • A copy of a valid work permit if the responsible person is not a national.
  • Current audited accounts. In the absence of current audited accounts, please provide an explanation of why it is not possible to provide accounts and instead submit an annual statement of income and expenditure.
  • Detailed project budget using a template provided as part of the application form. (The budget should be provided both in the local currency and USD currency, indicating the date of currency conversion and rate used)
  • A copy of the organisation structure if available.  Alternatively, a summary list of staff positions in the organisation indicating number of people per position.
  • Curriculum vitae (CVs) of the key institutional contact, the person responsible for project coordination and for the person responsible for finance management of the project.
  • If applying for training related project, please also include the following:
  • Completed training sheet for activities involving training using the template provided with the grant application form.
  • If applying for the purchase of equipment, medicines or materials, please also include the following:
  • A minimum of three quotes for proposed equipment purchases if applicable indicating the preferred quote and reasons for this.

2015 African Palliative Care Education Nurses Scholarships for Africans

The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) in partnership with Global Partners in Care provides a limited number of scholarships each year for Palliative Care Training opportunities. 

Scholarships are awarded up to a maximum of US$ 4,000 through a competitive application process once a year. APCA and Global Partners in Care give priority to requests of Registered and Enrolled nurses to pursue palliative care training in Africa. 

Scholarship Worth:

The Scholarship fund will support:

Palliative care education and training at recognized institutions in Africa for Enrolled and Registered Nurses.  Training programmes which the Scholarship supports include:

  • Palliative care distance learning diploma and degree courses run in Africa (up to USD $4,000)
  • Special consideration on a case by case basis may be made.

Additional funds may be awarded to nurses and social worker scholarship recipients who agree to train other health care workers in palliative care in their respective community.

*Note: This list is not exhaustive and is presented as an indication of what the fund will cover. Other appropriate training opportunities within Africa for nurses related to palliative care may also be considered for funding.  Please see some of the courses available in Africa

Application Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a Registered Nurse or an Enrolled Nurse residing and practicing in Africa and with evidence that they will be able to continue providing palliative care after their training (please provide a supporting letter from head of your institution confirming this).
  • Currently be involved in the provision of palliative care with a desire and commitment to enhance their skills.
  • Have applied for the course they intend to pursue (where they have an acceptance this should be attached to the application)
  • Legibly complete the application form  and attach all supporting documents requested 

Issues to note in regard to the application process

  • The offer is conditional on applicants securing admission to the Training institution and will only be awarded when this confirmation is received. Should the candidate not be accepted, the scholarship will be awarded to another candidate.
  • Successful applicants should be ready to commence the training in the current year.

  • Applicants must complete all the sections of the form and provide the supporting documents required.
