The Africa-China Reporting Project Wildlife Poaching & Trafficking Journalism Training Workshop 2019

The Africa-China Reporting Project (the Project) at Wits Journalism and partners Khetha (WWF) and VukaNow (USAID) invite journalists who report on wildlife poaching and trafficking from countries in Southern Africa (see specific countries below) to submit applications to participate in the Wildlife Poaching & Trafficking Journalism Training Workshop that will take place in South Africa in July 2019.

The Workshop will focus on community engagement and conducting impactful reporting, and will provide training on investigative reporting techniques, the trafficking supply chain to and demand in Asia, and innovative methods for community and public engagement in understanding and fighting wildlife poaching and trafficking.

Preference will be given to applicants with proposals for investigations focusing on community development and innovative solutions regarding the poaching of rhinos and elephants and the illegal trade of these species. Exceptions can be made for investigations on lions and pangolins, depending on the nature of the story.

Requirements

The Workshop will take place during the first or second week of July 2019 in Johannesburg and at the Southern African Wildlife College near Mbombela, Mpumalanga province. Applications are open to journalists from South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Angola and Malawi.

Applications will be considered from journalists with various levels of experience and from different geographical landscapes e.g. citizen journalists from rural communities and urban-based journalists, etc.

The Workshop will include a networking cocktail event with newspaper editors and media professionals in Johannesburg, and possibly engagement with communities surrounding the Kruger National Park as well as staff and officials involved with conservation and anti-poaching efforts.

After the Workshop selected participating journalists will be provided with a reporting grant to conduct the investigation they presented at the Workshop; selected journalists will also be invited to present their investigations at the Africa-China Journalists Forum that will take place at the African Investigative Journalism Conference at Wits University in October 2019.

  • Applicant CV, and list of previous journalism reporting, include if available any previous reporting on wildlife poaching and trafficking
  • Proposal for wildlife poaching and trafficking story to be investigated in the countries mentioned above, with a clear proposed headline at the start, a brief description of the article concept and objectives, and a brief report of WHAT will be investigated and HOW, including an indication of the relevance to community engagement/impact/solutions to wildlife poaching and trafficking related to rhinos and elephants in the countries mentioned above
  • The proposal should also include:
    • Indication of where the investigation will be published
    • A detailed budget for the investigation to be conducted after the Workshop with specific line items totaling no more than US$1,500

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Wits Journalism Africa-China audio/visual reporting/Investigative grant (US$3,000 grant)

The Africa-China Reporting Project (the Project) at Wits Journalism and partner China House are inviting journalists to submit proposals for two opportunities: Africa-China audio/visual reporting grants or investigative reporting grants with total budgets of around US$3,000 per grant. See How to apply below and Potential focus areas in the appendix for examples of previous topics.

The Project provides capacity building and facilitation in the form of reporting grants, workshops and other opportunities for journalists to investigate complex dynamics and uncover untold stories. The Project encourages journalists to emphasize on-the-ground impact and perspectives to illustrate how the lives of the people of Africa are changing amid the comprehensive phenomenon of Africa-China interactions (more about the Africa-China Reporting Project).

China House is a social enterprise established in 2014 that sends young people from China to Africa for research and community projects, and that provides research services for international organizations on projects that focus on sustainable development and Chinese investment practices in Africa (more about China House).

The Project is seeking applications from journalists for two different types of reporting grants:

  • Audio/visual reporting grants: For audio or video reporting projects by journalists established at media houses and preferably with the necessary equipment readily available, as the grant will likely not be sufficient to cover hiring of equipment and full production costs
  • Investigative reporting grants: For print and/or online investigations by journalists working at media houses as well as freelance journalists. Preference will be given to applicants able to include established publishing platforms and the involvement of investigating or other partners in their proposals

This is the first time that the Project has opened a call specifically for audio/visual reporting grants; in 2018 the Project launched the first call for investigative reporting grants. Via this call for both audio/visual and investigative reporting grants the Project seeks to promote dynamic storytelling and reporting of Africa-China investigations focusing on specific issues that are in the public interest and have a relevance to China’s and Chinese interests’ roles, activities and impact in Africa. The Project encourages journalists to submit proposals that aim to bring to light fresh and nuanced investigations with new findings about complex Africa-China relations, and if possible that involves other partners and institutions who can collaborate on and expand the investigations (the Project can potentially assist applicants to form partnerships with investigating partners in Asia and elsewhere). Of importance is for applicants to present fresh and important ideas and a feasible plan to carry them out.

  • Proposal for story to be investigated, with a clear proposed headline at the start and a brief report of WHAT will be investigated and HOW, including a detailed methodology for how and where the investigation will be undertaken
  • Audio/visual reporting proposals should include a draft production storyboard to support the methodology
  • An indication of where the investigation will be published or aired, and which partners if any will be used or required and how this will expand the investigation
  • A detailed budget with specific line items totalling as much as US$3,000

Africa-China Reporting Workshop & Fieldwork Project 2017 for African journalists – Johannesburg, South Africa (Fully Funded)

The Africa-China Reporting Project (the Project) at Wits Journalism is seeking applications from African and Chinese journalists to participate in the Africa-China Reporting Workshop & Fieldwork Project in Johannesburg in November 2017.

Africa-China Reporting Workshop & Fieldwork Project

This will be a practical skills and training Workshop at Wits Journalism in Johannesburg, and a Fieldwork Project where participants will be given time, support and mentoring by working professional journalists to undertake an Africa-China reporting investigation in Johannesburg/Gauteng.

The premise of this Workshop is that African and Chinese journalists can work together for better results in reporting and investigating important Africa-China issues. The Project will select five African and five Chinese journalists, and will pair them together in five teams of two each based on proposals submitted by the journalists and the theme selected by each (see below). The Project will pair participants well in advance of the Workshop and give them time to communicate and familiarise with each other; the objective is for them to learn as much as possible from each other and work well together.

Workshop delegates will arrive in Johannesburg on 6 Nov. The Workshop will consist of two stages: training and skills development Workshop (around three days, 7-9 Nov.), and the Fieldwork Project (around ten days, 10-19 Nov.). During the training and skills development stage, all the workshop participants will undergo practical training as well as refine and align the investigation they will do. For the fieldwork/reporting stage of the Workshop, the Project will assign assistants from the Wits Journalism Department and working journalists as mentors to each team, who will undertake their investigation under the guidance of the following mentors who are professional and experienced journalists:

  • John Bailey (eNCA)
  • Kevin Bloom (The Daily Maverick)
  • Phillip de Wet (Mail & Guardian)
  • Carien du Plessis (freelance)
  • Richard Poplak (The Daily Maverick)

Benefits:

  • The Project will provide airfares, accommodation, reporting stipends and other related expenses for each participant.
  • As this is a Reporting Workshop, applicants will be expected to include a specific Africa-China research proposal in their applications as well as select a theme from the list below. It is essential that applicants provide a reporting proposal for a topic that can practically be investigated in Johannesburg/Gauteng during the time of the Workshop and is an important Africa-China issue.

Applications should contain the following:

  • Applicant CV and short personal bio (no more than 250 words)
  • List of applicant’s previous published reporting on Africa and/or Africa-China, including online links where available
  • Clear indication of which theme is preferred based on the five suggested above
  • Proposal for a relevant and specific Africa-China topic to be pursued during fieldwork/reporting stage of the Workshop. This proposal must be practical and not too broad in scope (see the Project’s guidelines [中文] for reporting grant applications that call for proposals with a relatively narrow focus around specific projects or issues)

Please take note of the following when preparing proposals:

  • Applications should be submitted in English; only MS Word or PDF formats will be accepted
  • Due to the nature of this Workshop applicants must have a reasonable English ability
