Thought for Food Announces the 10 Finalist Teams of the 2017 TFF Challenge

Thought for Food (TFF) have announced the 10 teams of university students who have been selected as Finalists in the TFF Challenge. These teams – hailing from universities in Colombia, France, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Switzerland, Uganda, the United Kingdom and the USA – will move forward to Round 2 of the competition, where they will receive 12 weeks of intense mentorship in the TFF Startup Bootcamp followed by the chance to win seed funding of up to $30,000 at the TFF Global Summit (taking place in Amsterdam on May 26th and 27^th, 2017).

The annual TFF Challenge is the world’s largest open competition for university students who are building the future of Food & Agriculture. Student teams are empowered with tools and mentorship, and submit proposals that seek to solve the question: How do we feed and nourish 9+ billion people by 2050? Nearly 500 entries from 129 countries were received in this edition of the TFF Challenge.

The ideas generated by the TFF Challenge Finalists cover a variety of important innovation areas for the future, including finance, biotech, big data, fertilizer/inputs, vertical farming, ag tech, logistics, food preservation and new foods. The Finalists were selected by an external expert panel of judges from organizations such as One Acre Fund, GODAN, Syngenta, Krishi Janani, Gro Intelligence, the French Institute of Culinary Technologies and Monitor Deloitte.

Agri-Yolo (France) – An investment platform enabling collaborative projects between Agribusiness (Agri), Young Investors (Yo) and Landowners (Lo). HEC Paris

AgroSpheres (USA) – A bioparticle that degrades pesticides into safe by-products in a matter of hours, allowing farmers to better control when they harvest crops. University of Virginia

BlueGreen Nexus (USA) – A floating greenhouse that uses passive solar energy to distill ocean water into freshwater, creating a land, water and energy-neutral form of scaleable urban agriculture. Sterling College; Savannah College of Art & Design; Green Mountain College

Climate Edge (UK) – A low-cost weather station and online monitoring system that provides targeted recommendations for smallholder farmers in tropical climates. Imperial College London

Dairy FIT (USA) – Combining the power of machine learning and data analytics technologies to predict cattle behaviour and genomic tendencies, with an aim to improve the health, well being and productivity of intensively-farmed animals. Colorado State University

From Challenge to Opportunity (India) – Creating an affordable fertilizer from seaweed for farmers, and using the leftover pulp to make nutritious cookies for malnourished children. Gujarat Technological U; The Institution Of Engineers (INDIA); EPFL (Switzerland)

Growing Future (Cultivando Futuro) (Colombia) – An information and agro-commerce platform that facilitates direct sales between small farmers and consumers, leveraging open data to analyze market trends. Jorge Tadeo Lozano; Universidad de Los Andes; Universidad Sergio Arboleda

Ligno Flava (Indonesia) – Sustainable, low-cost, natural vanilla production from food waste that can replace chemical flavorings. University of Brawijaya

Sparky (Uganda) – A thermo-dehydrator for vegetables and fruits powered by bio-waste to prolong the shelf-life of produce from two days to two years. Makerere U; Uganda Technical College- Elgon; Kyambogo U

WasteBuster (Malaysia) – Using discarded fruits and vegetables to create a dried, nutrient-rich food which can be used in disaster relief situations and as a solid fuel source. Universiti Putra Malaysia

Thought For Food (TFF) Global Challenge 2016/2017 for Young Innovators in Food & Agriculture (USD$25,000 Cash Prize)

The Thought For Food (TFF) Global Challenge is the world’s leading competition for food and agriculture, calling on young innovators at universities around the world to develop new business solutions that tackle the complex challenges surrounding how to feed and nourish 9+ billion people by 2050. This year, there are $25,000 in cash prizes up for grabs as well as extensive in-kind support.

Thought For Food is a movement dedicated to tackling the global challenge of feeding 9 billion people through bold, breakthrough solutions generated by the world’s best and brightest university students.

Eligibility Requirements:

University students (undergraduate, graduate, masters or PhD) from any country and any age group who are enrolled in a degree-seeking program at an accredited university are eligible to participate in the TFF Challenge.

Submission

Once signed up, students have until January 8, 2017 to finalize their teams of 3-5 students and complete Round 1 of the Challenge.
During Round 1, they will have access to mentors and tools such as the TFF Design Thinking Lab to help them develop their breakthrough ideas.

Benefits:

In late January 2017, 10 Finalist teams will be selected to move on to Round 2 and participate in the TFF start-up bootcamp and pitch training.
They will also win a trip to attend the epic TFF Global Summit, where they will pitch their ideas for a shot at seed funding ($25,000 in cash prizes) as well as extensive in-kind support!

Finalists

10 Finalist teams will be chosen at the end of Round 1 to move on to Round 2. These 10 teams will receive 10 weeks of Pre-Accelerator business training, and travel and accommodation to attend the TFF Bootcamp and TFF Global Summit in Spring, 2017.

Winners

At the TFF Summit, one Grand Prize winning team will be chosen to receive $10,000 USD, and one Runner Up team will be chosen to receive $7,500 USD. The team most qualified for an investment will be awarded the Kirchner Food Fellows Prize worth $5,000 USD, and the Borlaug Institute for International Agriculture will award $2,500 to the team that has a strong impact directly on farmers.

2015/16 Thought For Food Challenge for Breakthrough Food Security Projects ($USD 10,000 Prize)

The 2015/16 Thought For Food Challenge calls on the world’s best and brightest university students to form teams and develop breakthrough projects that address the global challenge of feeding 9 billion people by 2050.In return, we provide a platform for you to shine, cutting-edge learning tools and resources, world-class mentorship from rockstar experts, innovators and entrepreneurs, the chance to win a trip to the inspirational TFF Global Summit as well as significant funding for your project.

You’ll also join a growing global movement, comprised of friends and supporters who share your passion to make the world a better place.

ELIGIBILITY:

The Event is open to individuals 17 years of age or older at the time of registration and individuals must be enrolled in a university study program at time of entry.
In order to participate, teams must be comprised of at least 3 and no more than 5 current university students.
Universities may enter multiple teams.
Teams may be comprised of students from different universities.

How it works

Teams of 3-5 will have until December 1, 2015 at 12:00AM PST to work through the TFF Design Lab, craft their idea and create a compelling pitch.
Next, Ten Finalist teams will be selected to move on to Round 2 where they will receive an all expense paid trip to the TFF Summit (Early Spring 2016) and participate in the intensive TFF Startup Bootcamp.
One Grand Prize of $10,000 and one Runner Up prize of $5,000 will be awarded at the TFF Summit.

Mentors

All participating teams get access to the TFF Design Lab and professional mentors representing a variety of fields of expertise.

TFF Summit

Finalists will represent their university at the TFF Summit and pitch their ideas to a top-caliber judging panel.

Fame

All teams become part of the amazing TFF community of friends and supporters. They also have the chance for their ideas to gain worldwide attention by being profiled in our TFF video productions and by other media.
