SIDA International Training Programme 2017 – MENA a Quality Infrastructure in Support of World Trade

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) is seeking applicants for its International Training Programme, “MENA a Quality Infrastructure in Support of World Trade”. The Programme runs from 12 March to 7 April 2017 in Sweden and Cairo October 2017 in Cairo, Egypt.

Objectives

The overall objectives are:
• to enable organisational change where participants will be given the opportunity use the knowledge and experiences provided by the programme to contribute to the development of the national and regional quality infrastructures and strengthening sustainable development as well as protection and preservation of the environment
• to support LAS, specifically the Arab Economic Integration Department, in strengthening its operations related to the implementation of the PAFTA agreement to facilitate regional trade and at the same time support its members in taking use of the benefits embedded in the agreement to facilitate intra-regional trade

Target Group

  • The following countries and regional organisations are invited to nominate candidates: Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia, Yemen, AIDMO and League of Arab States. Applications from the following countries will be accepted on a fee for cost basis: Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Syria, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Oman and Qatar.
  • These countries will have to cover all cost for travel and accommodation in addition to a fixed amount of 5000 SEK for participation in the training.
  • This amount will cover local travel, tutoring and extracurricular activities.

Only candidates nominated by the appropriate organisations and in accordance with national rules will be considered. The programme is intended first and foremost for those involved in the decision-making process when implementing quality infrastructure in the countries and at regional level, in accordance with international agreements and requirements and their support functions.

Participants will typically come from regional institutions, ministries dealing with requirements on goods on the national markets, international trade, industry and commerce, conformity assessment bodies (standardisation bodies, certification bodies, testing laboratories, inspection bodies, metrology institutions or laboratories) and from accreditation bodies or national focal points for accreditation. Participants will also come from environmental ministries and environmental institutions in the countries.

Agriculture for Food Security 2030 (AgriFoSe2030) Training Programme 2017 for Young African Researchers – Nairobi,Kenya (Fully Funded)

The Agriculture for Food Security 2030 (AgriFoSe2030) Programme funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) will conduct a training course for African young researchers on effective research-to-policy communication for agricultural development.

The course is a collaboration between AgriFoSe2030 and The Gothenburg Center for Environment and Sustainability (GMV) at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology.

Course objectives
The objectives of the short training course are to:
1. Enhance understanding of the policy landscape, research policy linkages and different models for policy engagement and knowledge exchange;
2. Equip young researchers with hands-on tools and skills for effective research-to-policy communication;
3. Share experiences and lessons on best practices in communicating research outputs;
4. Strengthen national networks for policy influence in African agriculture.
Participants will be trained in mapping the policy landscape and stakeholders, different models and strategies for policy engagement, formulating a research-to-policy plan and policy briefs and presenting policy recommendations aimed at the desired target group.

Requirements
The applicants must
• Be university lecturers or post-doctoral researchers currently affiliated with a university in sub-Saharan Africa;
• Have recently completed his or her Ph.D. in a field of relevance, within five years of the course date (no earlier than Jan 2011);
• Have a good record of scientific publications in the areas of agriculture, agroforestry, forestry, environment or any other similar area;
• Have experience or strong interest in knowledge exchange and communicating research outputs to policymakers for impact.

Participation

  • The course is open to 30 young researchers working on agriculture and food security.
  • 15 places will be available for the specialization in “Socio-economic dimensions” (Theme 1) and 15 places are allocated to the specialization in “Multifunctional landscapes” (Theme 2).
  • The course will be held from 22-28 January 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • The course is free of charge. Travel, lodging and meals will be covered by the AgriFoSe2030 Programme.

2. maximum 1-page letter describing i) your motivation to attend the course, and
ii) how you intend to use the knowledge and tools from the course in your policy
outreach work
3. state your preference for specialisation for the second half of the course in the
headline of your e-mail: Theme 1 (Socio-economic dimensions) or Theme 2 (Multifunctional landscapes)

2016 OWSD Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa & Least Developed Countries .

The OWSD Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDC) at Centres of Excellence in the South. The Fellowship is offered to women scientists to pursue postgraduate research in a field of the natural sciences.

This fellowship programme is for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa or Least Developed Countries (LDCs) who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a doctorate degree at a centre of excellence in the South outside their own country.

With funds generously provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), OWSD has instituted a fellowship programme for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a PhD, at centres of excellence in the South (developing countries), outside their own country.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Open to qualified women science graduates from countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (see list below).
  • If applicants are over 40 years of age, they should include a brief explanation of why their research career has been delayed.
  • The minimum qualification is an MSc degree (or equivalent), or an outstanding BSc honours degree in the natural sciences, engineering or information technology disciplines (see list below).
  • Host institutions must be located in a developing country. This must be a different country from the applicant’s home country.
  • Applicants must provide a preliminary acceptance letter from at least one host institute. The letter must be prepared based on the sample on page 10 and be signed by the head of department, potential host supervisor or postgraduate studies coordinator.
  • The application will be evaluated more favourably if the preliminary acceptance letter is supported by a letter of commitment from the prospective host supervisor, describing why the host institute is appropriate for the subject of study and confirming the supervisor’s interest in working with the student.
  • Students from eligible countries already enrolled on a PhD programme in their home country can apply for the sandwich option. This gives them access to expertise and resources that might not be available at the home institute.
  • Applicants already on site in the host country will not be considered eligible since this implies that they have already secured sufficient funding for their studies.
  • The applicant must be willing to return to her own country after completion of the fellowship.
  • Accompanying persons are not eligible for support.

Rep., Congo Rep., Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kenya, Kiribati, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Niger, Réunion, Rwanda, Samoa, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda,  Western Sahara, Vanuatu, Yemen, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Eligible Scientific Fields:

Agricultural Sciences; Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology; Biological Systems and Organisms; Medical and Health Sciences; Neurosciences; Chemical Sciences; Engineering Sciences; Information Technology; Astronomy, Space and Earth Sciences; Mathematical Sciences; Physics

Fellowship Worth:

The fellowship is offered to carry out postgraduate research in the natural, engineering and information technology sciences. Each fellowship will be offered for up to three years and will cover the following:

  • Travel to and from the host institute;
  • A monthly allowance to cover accommodation and meals while in the host country;
  • Study fees (including tuition and registration fees);
  • Visa expenses;
  • A yearly medical insurance contribution;
  • A lump sum allowance to attend international conferences during the period of the fellowship;
  • On a competitive basis, attending of scientific communication and proposal writing workshop; and
  • On a competitive basis, attending the Fifth OWSD General Assembly and International Conference scheduled for 2016.
