Swedish Institute (SI) provides fully-funded scholarships for ambitious professionals to pursue a full-time master’s degree in Sweden. All the scholarship holders are included in the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL) – a platform to help the scholarship holders grow professionally and build their network. After their studies, the SI Alumni Network will be a platform for continued networking and further professional development for them. Criteria

Country of citizenship

You must be a citizen of a country that is eligible for the scholarship programme. Read more about country of citizenship.

You must be liable to pay tuition fees to Swedish universities, have followed the steps of university admission, and be admitted to one of the eligible master’s programmes by the 9th of April 2021.

  • have already resided in Sweden for cumulatively two years or more, prior to the scholarship period (August 2021);
  • have previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for master’s level studies or research at a Swedish university/university college; Previous participants of the SI Summer Academy for Young Professionals (SAYP), and students who have attended SI summer courses in the Swedish language or the Swedish Institute Summer University (SISU) may still apply;
  • already hold a degree from a Swedish university/university college;
  • are currently enrolled in a study programme at a Swedish university/university college;
  • have a Swedish or EU/EEA citizenship*, a Swedish permanent residence permit or a temporary work- and residence permit based on work or on family ties with a citizen of Sweden/EU/EEA country who has a temporary or permanent right of residence in Sweden; or
  • have dual citizenship in countries not listed on the DAC list of ODA recipients.

*Exception: students with dual citizenship in Romania may still apply for a scholarship but must apply with the citizenship that is eligible for the SI Scholarships for Global Professionals when applying to SI Scholarships as well as University Admissions.

Benefits

  • The scholarship is intended for full-time one-year or two-year master’s programmes.
  • The scholarship period cannot be changed or extended beyond the awarded scholarship period, nor can it be transferred to a study programme other than the awarded master’s programme.
  • SI fully covers your tuition fees to the Swedish university you are attending. This is paid directly by SI at the beginning of each semester.
  • You will receive a regular payment of SEK 10,000 to cover your living expenses throughout the scholarship. This payment is given monthly throughout the scholarship period.
  • Insurance against illness and accident.
  • Membership of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders(NFGL) – a platform to help you grow professionally and build your network while in Sweden.
  • After your scholarship period has ended, you gain membership to the SI Alumni Network. As a member, you get a unique opportunity for continued networking and to further develop yourself professionally. The local networks exist worldwide and currently consist of over 15,000 talented alumni from over 140 countries.
  • For Bangladesh; Bolivia; Brazil; Cambodia; Cameroon; Colombia; Ecuador; Egypt; Ethiopia; Gambia; Ghana; Guatemala; Honduras; Indonesia; Jordan; Kenya; Liberia; Malawi; Morocco; Myanmar (Burma); Nepal; Nigeria; Pakistan; Peru; Philippines; Rwanda; Sri Lanka; Sudan; Tanzania; Tunisia; Uganda; Vietnam; Zambia; Zimbabwe the scholarship also includes a travel grant of SEK 15,000 for the entire study period. This is a one-time payment and does not apply for students already living in Sweden.
  • For Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russian Federation, Turkey or Ukraine. The scholarship also includes a travel grant of SEK 10,000 for the entire study period.This is a one-time payment and does not apply for students already living in Sweden.

Application Procedure

Required documents

Note! Documents for the next call (2021/2022) will be made available here in December 2020/January 2021. 

You should only submit the required documents listed below in your online scholarship application. We will not consider any other documents than the required ones. You must complete your application in English. Use our forms and templates provided below and complete them according to the instructions both below and in the forms, or else your applications will be disqualified. Kindly note the length limitation for your answers and the documents.

A complete application consists of:

  • Motivation letter
  • CV
  • Letters of reference
  • Valid and completed proof of work and leadership experience
  • Copy of your valid passport

Note: Your application will be disqualified if any of the required documents above is missing.

Motivation letter

You must use the Global Professionals form for the motivation letter 2021/2022. You need to fill in and upload the motivation letter as a PDF-file on the application portal within the application period.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

You must use the Global Professionals form for CV 2021/2022 and the CV should not exceed three pages. It’s up to you to decide which parts are relevant for your application. Additional pages will not be considered during the evaluation.

Letters of reference

You must use the Global Professionals form for the letter of reference 2021/2022. One letter of reference based on work experience is mandatory. All letters of reference must be signed by the referee and stamped with an official stamp of the referred organisation or notary office. The letters should be typed, then printed, signed, stamped, and uploaded as a single PDF-file. You can find more information in the instruction in the form and our FAQ.

  • Two different letters of reference are mandatory as part of the application. It is also a merit if the second letter of reference is based on your involvement in networks or civil society organisations outside of your regular work.

  1. Apply for up to four eligible master’s programmes at at universityadmissions.se by 15 January 2021.
  2. Once you have submitted your application to the master’s programme(s) at universityadmissions.se, you will get a personal application number consisting of eight digits. Save the number as you will need it when applying to Global Professionals. Your application will be disqualified if you type in the wrong number in the online application form.
  3. Submit your receipt of the application fee and the supporting documents required by University Admissionsbefore the deadline on 1 February 2021. The fee is non-refundable.

Note: If you missed the deadlines or failed to follow the application procedure at University Admissions, you will not be eligible for a Global Professionals scholarship.

Are you a talented and ambitious citizen of South Africa and want to study for a master’s degree in Sweden on a fully-funded scholarship? Find out if you can apply to the Swedish Institute Scholarships for South Africa.

The Swedish Institute Scholarships for South Africa (SISSA) programme is part of the Swedish government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders who will contribute to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden and administered by the Swedish Institute (SI).

The programme offers a unique opportunity for future leaders to develop professionally and academically, to experience Swedish society and culture, and to build a long-lasting relationship with Sweden and with each other. SISSA is a special initiative in connection with the Binational Commission agreement between Sweden and South Africa.

The goal is to enable the scholarship holders to play an active role in the positive development of the societies in which they live. Ideal candidates are ambitious young professionals with academic qualifications, demonstrated leadership experience, ambition to make a difference by working with issues which contribute to a just and sustainable development in their country in a long term perspective, and a clear idea of how a study programme in Sweden would benefit their country.

Criteria

Country of citizenship

Only citizens of South Africa are eligible for SISSA.

You must be liable to pay tuition fees to Swedish universities, followed the steps of university admission, and be admitted to one of the eligible master’s programmes by 4 April 2019.

Priority will be given to applicants who

  1. have completed bachelor’s with honours or equivalent from a South African university, and
  2. choosing study programmes with an emphasis on one of the following subject areas (listed in alphabetical order, no priority or ranking is implied):
  • Computer science and IT
  • Design (industrial design, architecture, urban/regional planning)
  • Engineering
  • Environmental technology/Sustainable development
  • Gender studies
  • Nanotechnology
  • Public health

The scholarship covers

*The travel grant is a one-time payment for the entire scholarship period. The grant is not applicable to students already living in Sweden.

The scholarship does not cover

  • Additional grants for family members.
  • Application fee to University Admissions.

Scholarship period

The scholarship is intended for full-time one-year or two-year master’s programmes, and is only awarded for programmes starting in the autumn semester. The scholarship is granted for one academic year (two semesters) at a time. It will be extended for programmes longer than two semesters, provided that the student has passed his/her courses/credits.

The scholarship period cannot be changed or extended beyond the awarded scholarship period, nor can the scholarship be transferred to a study programme other than the awarded master’s programme.

Required documents

You should only submit the required documents listed below in your online scholarship application. We will not consider any other documents than the required ones. The compulsory documents required are:

  • A motivation letter: you must use the SISSA form for motivation letter 2019/2020. You need to fill in and upload the motivation letter as a PDF-file on the application portal during the application period.
  • A Curriculum Vitae (CV): you must use the SISSA template for CV 2019/2020 and the CV should not exceed three pages. It’s up to you to decide which parts are relevant for your application. Additional pages will not be considered.
  • A copy of your passport: your personal data including name, citizenship and photograph must be shown clearly. Copy of passport should be included together with the CV as a last fourth page. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a copy of your valid passport showing that your citizenship is South Africa, to include in your application.

Make sure you have a complete application

A complete application must consist of:

  1. a completed motivation letter
  2. a CV
  3. a copy of your valid passport

If your application is missing one of the required documents above, it will be disqualified.

Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) 2017 for Master’s Level Studies in Sweden (Fully Funded)

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) are awarded to students from selected countries for full-time master’s level studies in Sweden starting in the autumn semester 2017.

SISS is the Swedish government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. It is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden and administered by the Swedish Institute (SI). The programme offers a unique opportunity for future leaders to develop professionally and academically, to experience Swedish society and culture, and to build a long-lasting relationship with Sweden and with each other.

The goal is to enable the scholarship holders to play an active role in the positive development of the societies in which they live. Ideal candidates are ambitious young professionals with academic qualifications, demonstrated leadership experience and a clear idea of how a study programme in Sweden would benefit their country.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be from an eligible country and have at least 3,000 hours of experience from full-time/part-time employment, voluntary work, paid/unpaid internship, and/or position of trust.
  • Applicants must display academic qualifications and leadership experience.
  • In addition, applicants should show an ambition to make a difference by working with issues which contribute to a just and sustainable development in their country, in a long term perspective.
  • Applicants must come from a SISS-eligible country, and show proof of work and leadership experience. Scholarships will only be granted to candidates who have followed the steps of the university admission and been admitted to one of the eligible master programmes in Sweden.

  • Category 1:

    Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burkina-Faso, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

  • Category 2:

    Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, Indonesia, Iran and Vietnam.

    Category 3:

    Candidates with citizenships from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients other than the above mentioned and those countries included in other SI scholarship programmes, can apply within this category.

Benefits:

  • The scholarship covers both tuition fees (paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 9,000 per month. There are no additional grants for family members.

Travel grants

Scholarship holders from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients receive a travel grant in connection with their scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 15,000.

Insurance

Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance and Personal Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

Network memberships

All SI scholarship holders become members of the SI Network for Future Global Leaders (NFGL) – a network which offers exclusive opportunities for SI scholarship holders during their stay in Sweden.

Timeline:

The scholarship application period opens with a first application step 1 December 2016 – 24:00 GMT 16 January 2017, followed by a detailed second application step for successful candidates from the first step, on 1 – 10 February 2017.

Swedish Institute (SI) She Entrepreneurs Leadership Programme 2017 for Young Emerging Social Entrepreneurs (Fully Funded to Sweden)

The She Entrepreneurs programme is leadership training within the context of working for an equal and sustainable society using entrepreneurial principles. It is based on real business experiences and collaborative learning.

Participants will learn in group from both experts within the field and from each other. She Entrepreneurs consists of seminars, workshops and interactive learning methods mixed with reflection sessions, team-building and practical exercises. Facilitators and expert mentors are available for guidance. There are also study visits and meetings with inspiring social entrepreneurs.

She Entrepreneurs is an initiative from the Swedish Institute (SI), a public agency that promotes interest and confidence in Sweden around the world. Swedish values and experiences include creating a sustainable and equal society globally. Sweden is a reputed innovation leader and gender equality role model.

Eligibility Requirements:

To apply to She Entrepreneurs you have to:

  • have the drive, ambition and interest to use social entrepreneurship to implement a social business initiative that you have already started working on
  • be a citizen of Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine*, Sweden, Syria, Tunisia or Yemen
  • your social business initiative should be based and implemented in your country of citizenship or in one of the countries of the She Entrepreneurs programme listed above
  • be between 20 and 36 years old
  • have a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English.

*Palestinian ID holders, including Jerusalem ID

Please note that we are not able to make any exceptions to the eligibility requirements. Only completed applications will be considered.

Benefits:

  • During a total of two and a half weeks on two separate occasions, the She Entrepreneurs programme offers personal and professional development to women whose social enterprise delivers a solution for positive social change.
  • The hands-on and practical study programme consists of seminars, workshops and interactive learning methods combined with reflection sessions, team-building and practical exercises. Facilitators and expert mentors are available for guidance. There are also study visits and meetings with inspiring social entrepreneurs.
  • There is no fee for the programme.
  • Travel, hotel and food expenses are covered by the Swedish Institute

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships (SISS) are awarded to students from selected countries for full-time master’s level studies in Sweden starting in the autumn semester 2016. The scholarships cover both living costs and tuition fees. An estimated 300 scholarships will be available.

It is funded by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Sweden and administered by the Swedish Institute (SI), the programme offers a unique opportunity for future leaders to develop professionally and academically, to experience Swedish society and culture, and to build a long-lasting relationship with Sweden and with each other.

The goal is to enable the scholarship holders to play an active role in the positive development of the societies in which they live. Ideal candidates are ambitious young professionals with outstanding academic qualifications, demonstrated leadership experience and a clear idea of how a study programme in Sweden would benefit their country.

The scholarship is intended for full-time master’s level studies of one or two years, and is only awarded for programmes starting in the autumn semester. The scholarship is granted for one academic year (two semesters) at a time. It will be extended for programmes longer than two semesters, provided that the student has passed his/her courses/credits.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be from an eligible country and have at least a total of two years of experience from voluntary work, paid or unpaid internship, position of trust and/or full/part time employment.
  • Applicants must display outstanding academic qualifications and leadership experience. In addition, applicants should show an ambition to make a difference by working with issues which contribute to a just and sustainable development in their country, in a long term perspective.
  • Eligible countries 

    The programme is open to three different categories of countries. Approximately 100 scholarships within each category will be available.

Category 1:

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina-Faso, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Category 2:

Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, South Africa and Syria.

Category 3:

Candidates with citizenships from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients other than the above, or ODA countries included in other SI scholarship programmes, can apply within this category.

Application Process:

  • To be considered for a scholarship, you must first both complete your separate application to the master’s programme(s) before the university deadline of 15 January 2016, and pay your university admissions application fee (SEK 900) before 1 February 2016.
  • For the second step of the scholarship application you will be required to submit a Motivation letter, a Europass format CV, a passport copy, and two recommendation letters. The documents must be in English. If any mandatory document is not used or completed in English the application is deemed ineligible.

First step 1 December 2015 – 20 January 2016:

The first part of the application process will open on 1 December 2015. Apply through our online system. No documents will be required in the first step.

The scholarship application form is now available at the SI application portal. Application deadline is 24:00 CET on Wednesday 20 January 2016.

Second step 8–13 February 2016:

  1. Prepare a motivation letter according to the Swedish Institute template. Motivation letters in any other templates or formats are NOT valid. Make sure to read the questions in the motivation letter thoroughly, and be specific and personal in your reasoning. Answers may not exceed the allowed number of characters (letters and spaces) for each question. The template will be uploaded here in January 2016.
  2. Prepare a Curriculum Vitae (CV) in English, only using the Europass format of maximum three pages. A CV submitted in another format than the Europass format is NOT valid. Additional pages will not be considered.
  3. Prepare two references according to the SI template. At least one of the references must be in connection to one of the work experiences you mention in your application. Remember that a letter of reference which is not signed is NOT valid. The reference template will be uploaded here in January 2016.
  4. Prepare a copy of your passport to enclose with your application. Your personal data including citizenship and photograph must show clearly.
  5. The online application portal opens on 8 February 2016. Apply through our online system. A link to the online system will be published on this page on 8 February 2016.

An application without a valid and completed motivation letter, CV, letter of reference or copy of passport is deemed ineligible.

You need to submit a separate copy of your scholarship application for each eligible master’s programme which you have applied to. For example, if you have applied to the maximum four master’s programmes, you must submit four separate and complete online scholarship applications.

Each application must have a motivation letter, a CV, two letters of reference and a copy of your passport attached. You may use the same motivation letter, CV, passport copy and letters of reference for each application, or create unique ones for each master’s programme.

Timeline:

  • 1 December 2015–15 January 2016: University application and payment of application fee on universityadmissions.se.
  • 1 December 2015 – 20 January 2016: First step of the scholarship application. Apply for a Swedish Institute Study Scholarship through the online application service.
  • 1 February 2016: Deadline for supporting documents and payment of application fee for master’s programmes to university admissions. For detailed information see universityadmissions.se.
  • Early February 2016: Candidates from the first step of the scholarship application will be notified via email.
  • 8–13 February 2016: Second step of the scholarship application. Apply for a Swedish Institute Study Scholarship through the online application service.
  • 29 March 2016: Notifications of the first selection round for university admission are published on universityadmissions.se.
  • 12 April 2016: A list of successful candidates for the Swedish Institute scholarships is published at si.se.
  • 14 April 2016: Deadline for accepting your study place on universityadmissions.se.
  • April 2016: The Swedish Institute formal scholarship offer to successful candidates is sent by email.
