Swedish Institute Leader Lab 2023 for Civil Society Leaders in the MENA region (Fully Funded to Stockholm, Sweden)

Are you a leader in an organisation working for a more just, peaceful, and inclusive society? SI Leader Lab is a leadership programme for civil society leaders in Eastern Europe, South Asia or the MENA region who want to discover innovative tools and new forms of collaboration. Apply to SI Leader Lab if you want to grow as a leader, develop your organisation’s advocacy work and exchange knowledge in a network of inspirational peers.

SI Leader Lab is designed to strengthen the capacity of civil society organisations to drive successful advocacy work linked to Sustainable Development Goal 16 (promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies). The programme brings together influential civil society leaders who are open to new digital solutions and innovative methods. The network consists of peers from across various sub-sectors in civil society and provides the participants with broad input from different spheres in the field. 

There are three parallel programmes with an equal number of participants from three regions: 

  • 30 participants from South Asia 
  • 30 participants from the Middle East and North Africa 
  • 30 participants from Eastern Europe 

The programme combines online workshops, in both regional and cross-regional learning groups, with regular coaching support. In May, all 90 programme participants will come together in Stockholm for an intensive week of onsite learning that deepens the experience and enhances collaboration.  

The programme is an opportunity to develop your organisation’s advocacy work and strategic outreach. It is also an opportunity to grow as a leader, exchange knowledge, form new connections and test out innovative tools and methods with peers. 

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants to SI Leader Lab must meet the following requirements (may be subject to change): 

  • Have a leading position in a civil society organisation or network working toward Sustainable Development Goal 16, within the 2030 Agenda. This can, for example, be an organisation working within such areas as peace and security, equality and inclusion, transparency and anti-corruption, accountability, and access to free information and media integrity. 
  • Work with a team in which they have a leadership role (formal or informal). 
  • Be between the age of 25 and 45 years old (born 1977 to 1998). 
  • Have a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English. 
  • Be a citizen of Afghanistan, Algeria, Armenia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Egypt, Georgia, India, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Moldova, Morocco, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tunisia, Ukraine or Yemen. 
  • Be available to participate in all parts of the programme. 
  • Be prepared to implement tools, competencies and knowledge they gain from the programme in their team and organisation.

SI Leader Lab will give you:

  • Personal insights as a leader: how to lead yourself and others through increased self-awareness and increased understanding of group development. 
  • A stronger capacity in your organisation to successfully lead and organise teamwork.  
  • A stronger capacity in your organisation to lead and implement effective advocacy work.  
  • The possibility to share and build knowledge in a network of experts, to inspire each other and share experiences on common challenges

Programme timeline

  • Submission period for applications: 1 – 30 November 2022 
  • Selection period: 16 – 21 December 2022 
  • Notification of acceptance: 16 January 2023 
  • Online workshops and coaching: Mid-February – April 2023 
  • Onsite sessions in Stockholm (3 regions, 90+ participants): 2 – 10 May 2023 (incl. travel days)   
  • Programme wrap up, online: Early June 2023

SI Leader Lab is an online leadership programme for young civil society leaders in Eastern Europe, South Asia or the MENA region who are open for innovative tools and new forms for collaboration. Apply to SI Leader Lab if you want to grow as a leader, develop your advocacy skills and share knowledge in a network of inspirational peers.

SI Leader Lab brings together young influential civil society leaders who are working for the Sustainable Development Goals. The participants are the fast runners, the innovative minds and pioneers in their communities, open for new digital solutions and innovative methods. The network consists of peers from cross sectors in civil society and will give the participants a broad input from different spheres. The overarching objective is to strengthen leaders who are working for the Sustainable Development Goals.

This year the programme invites leaders who are working for the Sustainable Development Goal 16 (just, peaceful and inclusive societies Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions | The Global Goals).

There will be two programmes with participants from three regions:

  • 60 participants from South Asia, Middle East and North Afrika
  • 30 participants from Eastern Europe

The programme is an opportunity for you to develop your advocacy skills and work on strategic outreach within your focus area. It’s also an opportunity to grow as a leader, exchange experiences, form new connections and to try out innovative tools and methods with peers.

The programme, spread over three months, contains highly interactive online meetings. We will work in smaller learning groups, combined with sessions that include all participants. The training is founded on experience-based and collaborative learning and will allow you to explore real challenges and areas of development for your own organisation in an innovative and supportive environment.

You can apply to SI Leader Lab if you:

  • Have a leading position (formal or informal) in a civil society organisation or network working for the Sustainable Development Goal 16, within the 2030 Agenda.
  • Work in a collaborative setting, where you have a leadership role (formal or informal).
  • Are between 22 and 32 years old (born 1989–2000).
  • Have a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English.
  • Are a citizen of Afghanistan, Algeria, Armenia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Egypt, Georgia, India, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tunisia, Ukraine, Yemen
  • Are available to take part in all parts of the programme.
  • Are prepared to forward competences and knowledge you gain from the programme to your team, organisation or other relevant actors.

Please note that we are not able to make any exceptions to the eligibility requirements.

Please note that SI Leader Lab is a demanding programme, as we use experienced based learning and reflection as a tool for personal growth. Therefore, we recommend that all participants are in psychological balance and willing to put in the efforts that the programme requires.

  • Personal insights as a leader: how to lead yourself and others through increased self-awareness and increased understanding of group development.
  • An opportunity to explore effective advocacy methods that will help you shape and reach out with a message to intended audiences.
  • The possibility to share and build knowledge in a network of experts, to inspire each other and share experiences on common challenges.

  • Approximate schedule: 23 March -15 June – sessions once every week at 10 am-1 pm CET. There will also be some additional dates with longer sessions. Participants will take part in online seminars, practical group assignments and individual project work.

SI Leader Lab – Connecting advocates of gender equality

Are you a civil society leader in South Asia or the MENA region? Are you working for a more gender equal world? SI Leader Lab is an online leadership programme for advocates of gender equality who wish to grow in their role while exploring new tools and forms for collaboration. Apply to SI Leader Lab if you want to grow as a leader, develop your advocacy skills and share knowledge in a network of inspirational peers

SI Leader Lab 2021 will bring together 60 young influential civil society leaders in South Asia, the MENA region and Sweden who are active advocates of gender equality. The overarching objective is to strengthen leaders who are working for gender equality.

The programme is an opportunity for you to develop your advocacy skills and work on strategic outreach within your focus area. It’s also an opportunity to grow as a leader, exchange experiences, form new connections and to try out innovative tools and methods with peers working in a similar context.

The programme, spread over three months, contains highly interactive online meetings. We will work in smaller learning groups, combined with sessions that include all participants. The training is founded on experience-based and collaborative learning and will allow you to explore real challenges and areas of development for your own organisation in an innovative and supportive environment.

The programme is as much about personal as professional development. It is about growing as a person with renewed confidence and insights, and growing as a leader with new tools, methods and perspectives.

The particular expertise and experience of the participants will largely determine the topics that we work on. The following broader issues, however, will be central: value-based leadership and group development and effective advocacy methods.

SI Leader Lab will give you:

  • An opportunity to explore effective advocacy methods that will help you shape and reach out with a message to intended audiences.
  • The possibility to share and build knowledge in a network of experts, to inspire each other and share experiences on common challenges.

  • Are available to take part in all parts of the programme.
  • Are prepared to forward competences and knowledge you gain from the programme to your team, organisation or other relevant actors.

Please note that SI Leader Lab is a demanding programme, as we use experienced based learning and reflection as a tool for personal growth. Therefore, we recommend that all participants are in psychological balance and willing to put in the efforts that the programme requires.

SI Leader Lab was previously a blended learning programme mixing online sessions with one onsite meetings in Sweden. Due to the ongoing global pandemic situation and as the programme includes 60 participants from 18 different countries, it is hard to predict when it will be possible to hold onsite meetings for such a large international group. SI has therefore taken the decision to make the 2021 version of SI Leader Lab a 100 % digital experience.

Only applicants who have submitted a complete application will be considered for the programme. These are the steps in the application process:
