World Youth Alliance Africa Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC) 2015, Kenya.

The Africa Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC) is an annual event that brings together young people from across Africa to interact with leaders and policy makers on current global issues. The 2015 Africa Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC) is the sixth to be organised by World Youth Alliance Africa.

The conference will be conducted in English.

The 2015 conference will take place at Strathmore University, Nairobi, Kenya from Wednesday 11^th to Friday 13^th November, 2015.

Theme

The theme for the 2015 ELC is Empowering Youth to Shape Africa’s Future.

Africa’s youth make up more than 75% of Africa’s population. The youth are the future of Africa and we need to rise up and take charge of societies around us, taking active part in the life of society. We need to be empowered in education that directly develops the best in us, ethics, and skills in order to flourish and reach our full potential, and thereby guarantee free and just societies.

Whom:

The conference is open to participants 16-30 years. The conference fee is KSHS 3000 or 30USD

Fees

The three day conference will cost 3,000 KSHS (or 30 USD) for meals, conference materials.
All Kenyan applicants are required to make payments on or before 1st September.

2014 Waterloo-Strathmore Mobile Technology Challenge -Win a fully paid trip to Waterloo, Ontario Canada

The inaugural challenge calls for teams in East Africa to address agricultural issues in sub-Saharan Africa using mobile technologies and social networking.

Strathmore University, Kenya and the University of Waterloo, Canada have partnered to bring you the 2014 Mobile Technology Student Competion. The theme for this 1st inaugural competition is:

To address agricultural issues in sub-Saharan Africa using mobile and social networking technologies

Examples of agricultural issues lending themselves to mobile solutions could include but are not limited to:

Water
Food safety
Food traceability
Food supply sustainability
Agriculture waste management
Value of social networks in improving any of all aspects of the agriculture value chain
Technology as an enabler for food tracking

Who can participate?

Applications are sought from teams of Kenyans to bring their technical skills and innovative thinking to solve a real-world problem.
The competition is open to teams of maximum four students from Kenyan Universities to submit their registration form and brief description of the agricultural problem they believe can be alleviated by a mobile-based solution.
Teams will be informed if they have been accepted into the competition challenge by January 13, 2015 and the challenge officially begins on January 15, 2015 with the first of three rounds of video pitches administered by University of Waterloo’s Virtual Incubation Program.

Prizes
1st Prize:

The winning team will win a fully paid trip to Waterloo, Ontario Canada to give the winning team the opportunity of observing the Waterloo eco-system of venture creation and to meet individuals and groups that can further assist in developing their idea (subject to visa issuance) A complete agenda of this visit will be made available in February 2015.
2nd Prize:

One team wil be offered a chance to participate in the highly competitive Enterprise Development Program offered by the Strathmore Enterprise Development Centre. This training package is worth Kshs 480,000. Team members will have the chance of meeting seasoned entrepreneurs and trainers which will enable the team to practically implement their business model and grow their enterprise.

Other Prizes:

Five teams will have a chance to work at the @iLabAfrica incubator at Strathmore University from February 5, 2015 – April 3, 2015.

Fellowship Worth:Fellows will receive a stipend of USD 7,500 for 10-12 weeks in 2014

The Google Policy Fellowship program offers undergraduate, graduate, and law students interested in Internet and technology policy the opportunity to spend the summer contributing to the public dialogue on these issues, and exploring future academic and professional interests.

Fellows will have the opportunity to work at public interest organizations at the forefront of debates on broadband and access policy, content regulation, copyright and creativity, consumer privacy, open government, government surveillance, data security, data innovation, free expression and more.

Fellows will be assigned a lead mentor at their host organizations and will have the opportunity to work with several senior staff members over the course of the summer. Fellows will be expected to make substantive contributions to the work of their organization, including conducting policy research and analysis; drafting reports and analyses; attending government and industry meetings and conferences; and participating in other advocacy activities.

Eligibility

You must be 18 years of age or older by January 1, 2014 to be eligible to participate in Google Policy Fellowship program in 2014.
You must be eligible and authorized to work in the country of your fellowship. Google cannot provide guidance or assistance on obtaining the necessary documentation to meet this criteria.
You must be a student. Google defines a student as an individual enrolled in or accepted into an accredited institution including (but not necessarily limited to) colleges, universities, masters programs, PhD programs and undergraduate programs. Eligibility is based on enrollment in an accredited university by January 1, 2014.

Who should apply?

Google is looking for students who are passionate about technology, and want to spend the summer diving headfirst into Internet policy. Students from all majors and degree programs who possess the following qualities are encouraged to apply:

Demonstrated or stated commitment to Internet and technology policy
Excellent academic record, professional/extracurricular/volunteer activities, subject matter expertise
First-rate analytical, communications, research, and writing skills
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and efficiently, and to work smartly and resourcefully in a fast-paced environment

. Exact dates of the fellowship will be worked out by the fellow and host organization and will be subject to the academic schedules in different countries.

How do payments work?

Google will provide a stipend of $7,500 USD for each Fellow for the summer.

Accepted students in good standing with their host organization will receive a $3,500 USD stipend payable shortly after they begin the Fellowship.
Students who receive passing mid-term evaluations by their host organization will receive a $2,000 USD stipend shortly after the mid-term evaluation.
Students who receive passing final evaluations by their host organization and who have submitted their final program evaluations will receive a $2,000 USD stipend shortly after final evaluations.
