Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program 2018/2019 for Africans to study at Stanford University, USA (Fully Funded)

The Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program pays for tuition and associated fees (approximately US $170,000) for citizens of African countries with financial need who wish to obtain an MBA at Stanford GSB. Stanford will award up to six Stanford Africa MBA Fellowships annually. For those who are applying and make less than US$20,000, the Stanford Graduate School of Business Admissions will waive your application fee.

Within two years of graduation from Stanford GSB, Stanford Africa MBA Fellows are required to return to Africa to work for at least two years in a professional role that contributes positively to the continent’s development; thus fellows must live and work in Africa for at least two years by the time they are four years out of the Stanford MBA Program.

Fellowship Eligibility

You must demonstrate strong ties to Africa, including the following:

  • You must be a citizen of an African country. Dual citizens are eligible for the fellowship as long as you hold citizenship in an African nation. Residents of an African country who do not have citizenship in an African country are ineligible.
  • You must have completed, or be in the final year of completing, your university studies. If you studied at an undergraduate or graduate institution in Africa, we especially encourage you to consider applying for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program. African citizens who studied in countries outside of Africa are also eligible for the fellowship.

Application Process

To be considered for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship, you must apply to the Stanford MBA Program in either Round 1 or Round 2. We cannot consider you for the fellowship in Round 3. If you have already been admitted to the GSB and have deferred enrollment, you must apply to the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship the year prior to your enrollment. In the MBA application, you will indicate that you are applying for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship; doing so will trigger a prompt for an additional essay (listed below). You must submit the essay with your complete MBA Program application by the appropriate application deadline. Suggested essay length is 250 words. Follow the formatting requirements as outlined in the Essay Instructions.

Essay Topic

  • Tell us about your strong ties and commitment to Africa, including how you plan to make an impact (250 words).

Evaluation Criteria

  • Commitment to developing Africa: In addition to being citizen of an African nation (including dual citizens), you must show commitment to developing Africa. This includes returning to work in Africa within two years of graduation, for a period of at least two years.
  • Demonstrated financial need is preferred, as assessed through the Stanford GSB financial aid process.
  • Merit, determined by the three criteria used to consider candidates: intellectual vitality, demonstrated leadership potential, and personal qualities and contributions that will add to the class.

The Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program pays for tuition and associated fees (approximately US $150,000) for citizens of African countries with financial need who wish to obtain an MBA at Stanford GSB. Stanford will award up to eight Stanford Africa MBA Fellowships annually.

Within two years of graduation from Stanford GSB, Stanford Africa MBA Fellows are required to return to Africa to work for at least two years in a professional role that contributes to the continent’s development.

Requirements:

  • Stanford Africa MBA Fellows must first be selected as finalists through the fellowship application process.
  • Stanford will select up to 100 Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship finalists based on:
    • Merit
    • Commitment to developing Africa
    • Financial need

Educational history

  • Official transcripts are not considered at this stage. Finalists will be required to submit an unofficial copy of your transcripts in the MBA Application and will submit official copies upon admission to the MBA Program.
  • You may also submit the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and/or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), if available. These are optional at the fellowship application stage. If you are selected as a finalist, you’ll be required to take one of these exams as part of your application to the Stanford MBA Program.

Employment history

  • Letters of recommendation are not considered at this stage. Finalists will be required to submit two Letters of Recommendation in the MBA Application.

Up to 100 finalists will be selected for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship.

3. Finalists apply to Stanford MBA Program
(Round 1, September 2016 or Round 2, January 2017)

Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship finalists must apply to the Stanford MBA Program in either round one or round two to be eligible for the fellowship. However, we strongly encourage you to apply in round one. Over the last few years, the number of applications we receive in round two has increased, making it more competitive. Submitting in round one also gives you more time to prepare and plan for the program, including completing the visa application process.

Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship finalists must submit the Stanford MBA Program application, including GMAT or GRE scores, and if applicable, one of the English language tests (IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL). Finalists may request up to one voucher to cover the cost of either the GMAT or GRE test. The MBA application fee will be waived for finalists.

4. Receive an offer of admission
(December 2016 or March 2017)

Stanford GSB will select up to eight Stanford Africa MBA Fellows each year from among the finalists.

5. Enroll in two-year Stanford MBA Program
(September 2017)

6. Successfully complete the two-year Stanford MBA Program
(June 2019)

7. Within two years of graduation from the Stanford MBA Program, return to Africa
(June 2021)

Work in Africa – in a business, government, or non-profit organization – for at least two consecutive years.

The Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Programme.

The Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program pays for tuition and associated fees (approximately US$140,000) for citizens of African countries with financial need who wish to obtain an MBA at Stanford GSB. The Fellowship was created to reduce the financial barrier for African citizens to pursue an MBA at Stanford GSB. Up to eight fellowships will be awarded annually.

Within two years of graduation from Stanford GSB, Stanford Africa MBA Fellows are required to work in Africa for at least two years in a professional role that contributes to the continent’s development.

Application Process and Timeline

1) Apply to Stanford MBA Program in either the first or second round. Deadline dates for 2013-14 are still to be determined, but the Round 1 deadline is typically in early October, and the Round 2 deadline in early January.

2) Receive an offer of admission in first round (December) or second round (March).

3) Apply for need-based financial aid by the deadline date. After reviewing financial aid applications, Stanford GSB will notify you if you are selected as a Stanford Africa MBA Fellow.

4) Confirm enrollment in Stanford GSB and accept the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship.

5) Matriculate in, and successfully complete, the two-year Stanford MBA Program.

6) Within two years of graduation from the Stanford MBA  Program, return to Africa. Work in Africa—in business, government, or a non-profit organization—for at least two consecutive years.

Fellowship Eligibility and Requirements

Stanford Africa MBA Fellows will be selected based on the following criteria:

1. Admission to Stanford MBA Program

The initial qualification for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship is earning admission to the Stanford MBA Program.  We consider you for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship only after you have been admitted to the Stanford MBA Program..

To earn admission, you must display the same criteria as all Stanford MBA program applicants: intellectual vitality, demonstrated leadership potential, and personal qualities and contributions.  To learn more about the requirements and qualities we seek in candidates, please read the MBA Program website.

2. Commitment to Developing Africa

You must be a citizen of an African country. Dual citizens are eligible for the fellowship as long as one citizenship belongs to an African nation. Permanent residents of an African country are not eligible at this time.

You must have completed, or be in the final year of completing, your university studies. If you studied at an undergraduate or graduate institution in Africa, we especially encourage you to consider applying for the Stanford Africa MBA Fellowship Program.  Citizens of countries in Africa who studied in countries outside of Africa  remain eligible for consideration.

Stanford Africa MBA Fellows must return to work in Africa, within two years of Stanford MBA graduation, to work for a period of at least two years. Stanford MBA students pursue a wide variety of careers as alumni: you will be prepared to succeed in organizations of every size and description. As a Stanford Africa MBA Fellow, we expect you to contribute the management and leadership skills you learned at Stanford to developing the African economy. As such, our expectation is that Stanford Africa MBA Fellows will be committed to African organizations with significant operations and impact in the region.

3. Financial Need

To determine your financial need, you must complete Stanford’s financial aid process after you are admitted. All Stanford MBA students, regardless of citizenship, are eligible for financial assistance based on your demonstrated financial need.  Stanford GSB provides need-based fellowship to MBA students without regard to citizenship.  For international citizens, Stanford GSB offers a loan program that does not require a US co-signer. *

The financial aid application process requires information about your assets and income.  You will need to provide copies of your tax returns and other documentation. Information about the application process is available on the Stanford GSB Financial Aid Office website.

Stanford Africa MBA Fellows receive financial support for the cost of Stanford MBA tuition and associated fees for the full duration of the two-year course of study.

If you are admitted to the Stanford MBA Program but are not selected as a Stanford Africa MBA Fellow, you remain eligible to receive financial aid based on the need you demonstrate in your financial aid application. Your award will typically include a combination of fellowships and loans.

*Please note that citizens of Congo, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Lybia, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and Zimbabwe may need to discuss their loan options with the Financial Aid office.
