Standard Bank Derek Cooper Africa Scholarships 2020/2021 for Young Africans to study in the UK (Fully Funded)

LSE is pleased to confirm three Standard Bank Derek Cooper Africa Scholarships for the 2020/21 session.

These scholarships are generously supported by Standard Bank of South Africa PLC.

These scholarships are to support academically gifted students who do not have the financial means to pursue further studies of this nature.

The successful candidates will need to demonstrate a combination of exceptional academic merit and financial need.

The scholarships are for offer holders on the following LSE master’s programmes:

Applicants will ordinarily be resident in one of Standard Bank’s African presence countries, with a preference for residents of South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Angola, Mozambique and South Sudan.

Benefits:

The three scholarships will each provide the cost of full fees for the eligible programmes and provide a maintenance stipend for living costs.

How to Apply

To apply for LSE funding for programmes beginning in September 2020, you must:

– Submit your application for the programme (See how to apply for graduate study at LSE) 

– Submit your Graduate Financial Support Application Form via the Graduate application tracker including completing Section G: Personal Statement.

– and receive an offer of a place (conditional or unconditional) by 5pm UK time on 27 April 2020.

If you only wish to be considered for the Graduate Support Scheme, you do not need to complete Section G: Personal statement.

The outcome to your Graduate Support Scheme application will be displayed on the application tracker after you have received an offer. Successful applicants selected for other LSE Scholarships or awards like this one will be contacted by email thoughout May, June and July 2020.

The Standard Bank Africa, Derek Cooper Scholarship is available to graduate students who are and will ordinarily remain resident in one of the African countries in which Standard Bank is present (see full list below). Prospective candidates must demonstrate an exceptional academic track record and will need to have successfully qualified on their own merit in their application for a one-year Master’s programme at either of the following partner university institutions: Oxford, Cambridge and London School of Economics and Political Science.

Each specializing in their unique areas of expertise. These individuals will represent the best and brightest Africa has to offer, introducing thoughtful challenge amongst their peers as they grow in courage, fair-mindedness and integrity. Their stay and studies will be fully-funded and backed by Standard Bank as part of our commitment to enable and empower them to become effective leaders in Africa.

  • The scholarships aim to support African graduate students of outstanding academic merit and leadership potential, orindarily resident in Angola, Botswana, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, South Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Preference will be given to students ordinarily resident in Angola, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria and South Africa who have been accepted to undertake MPhils in Economics, Education, Engineering for Sustainable Development, Finance and Management. Applicants to the MBA and MFin are not eligible.
  • Award holders will be expected to return to their countries to work or study after completing their course at Cambridge.

Scholarship Worth:

  • The scholarships will provide the tuition and college fee in full, and a maintenance grant (i.e. living costs incurred in the college such as rental of college accommodation, food taken in college, etc.) commensurate to the national minimum doctoral stipend of the UK Research Councils and a single return economy air fare travel allowance.

The Standard Bank Africa, Derek Cooper Scholarship selection process:
The scholarships will be awarded annually, and the selection process will be managed through the University application process.
