Every year, the SAMRO Foundation offers two highly sought-after Scholarships for overseas study in music – one in the field of Western Art Music (what is generally referred to as “classical” music) and the other in Jazz Music.
The Scholarships – each to the value of R 170 000 – are awarded to the winners of an extended competition spread over three rounds, as adjudicated by a panel of music experts. Rotating every four years among keyboard players, instrumentalists, composers and singers, the competition turns its focus to singers in 2015.
The Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO) is South Africa’s national Society of Composers, Lyricists and Music Publishers, administering the performing and broadcasting rights in copyright musical works, as well as public performances of sound recordings (commonly referred to as needle time)
Requirements:
- The Scholarship competition is open to Singers born after 15 May 1982 who are citizens of South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho or Swaziland, and who have already completed (or expect to complete) their studies in 2015 for a recognised undergraduate or postgraduate degree majoring in singing
- All monetary awards must be used within 2 years of being awarded, failing which theywill expire. However, candidates who foresee that the deferral of the use of any funds awarded may become necessary, must submit their reason(s) for a deferral request in writing 3 months before the end of the 2-year period.
Application Requirement
Apart from the Application Form, applicants must also complete and submit a brief Curriculum Vitae with details as follows:-
- academic record and transcripts
- practical experience in vocal performance
- a point-form biographical summary of the candidate’s musical achievements: 2012 – 2014
- Applicants must include, on a separate sheet, a detailed outline of their plans for further study abroad, together with copies of any supporting documents.

- For purposes of publicity and marketing, all applicants should e-mail two high resolution jpegs (scanned at 300dpi), professional-quality photographs of the candidate (head and shoulders only), taken in the last 6 months (no printouts please)
- A copy of the candidate’s valid identity document as proof of age and citizenship

At least 2 current testimonials regarding the candidate’s vocal abilities from thecandidate’si) most recent singing teacherii) any other competent and recognised musical authority to whom the candidate’s vocal abilities are known
