Scholarships/Fellowships to attend the HIV Research for Prevention (HIVR4P 2020) Conference in Capetown,South Africa (Fully Funded)

HIVR4P is dedicated to ensuring the conference participation of researcher, community activists, civil society representatives and journalists, especially those from resource-limited countries and communities. In prioritizing the participation in the programme of groups and individuals from these settings, the conference creates pathways for the direct dissemination of scientific knowledge and best practices from the conference to local programmes and individuals in communities where it can be actively and effectively implemented.

Journalism Fellowship

Applications are welcome from all journalists reporting on HIV in any country. Applications are evaluated based on:

  • The impact of the media organization to be represented;
  • The applicant’s previous experience covering HIV and HIV prevention;
  • The applicant’s geographic location;
  • The strength of their motivation to attend and an evaluation of their supporting documents including media clips.

Community Scholarships

  • Individuals who are actively involved in HIV prevention as a community advocate, educator, care provider or in a related prevention-focused role;
  • Individuals who can effectively communicate knowledge gained at the conference to the communities they represent.

Research Scholarships

  • Graduate students, fellows or junior faculty within two years of faculty appointment, who are actively involved in HIV prevention research;
  • HIV Research areas may include, but is not limited to, basic science, product development, pre-clinical or clinical research, social and behavioural science, and public health;
  • Being first author on an abstract submission to HIVR4P 2020.

Process

The application process is entirely free.

Scholarship applicants can request one or more of the following grants:

  • Conference registration (includes access to all sessions)
  • Travel (pre-paid round trip, compliant to the Fly America Act)
  • Accommodation (check-in 10 October, check-out 15 or 16 October 2020)

The conference offers full scholarships, as well as registration-only scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on the availability of funds and the process is highly competitive.

Timeline

  • Applications will be accepted through an online platform until 20 April 2020, 23:59 Central European Summer Time (CEST) for journalist fellowships and until 23 April 2020, 23:59 CEST for research and community scholarships.
  • We highly recommend that you investigate and start immigration procedures well in advance of scholarship notifications.
  • All applicants will be notified at the end of June 2020.

The African Doctoral Academy (ADA) 2019 Summer School at Stellenbosch University, South Africa (Fully Funded)

The African Doctoral Academy (ADA) is privileged to offer a limited number of candidates, at the start of their Doctoral careers, the opportunity to attend the ADA Summer School at Stellenbosch University in January 2019.

In awarding this funding, our aim is to give successful candidates the opportunity to attend an ADA Doctoral School and spend time at a world-class research university, building their individual capacity and resilience for the journey ahead. This Summer the ADA will offer 19 courses over three weeks which includes a non-compulsory preparatory course followed by week-long courses in Research Design and Methodology (Quantitative and Qualitative), Mixed Methods Research Design as well as courses in analytical techniques and software applications (such as SPSS, R and ATLAS.ti), Preparing for a PhD, Writing and Publishing articles and training in Doctoral Supervision.

Eligibility:

ADA are once again privileged to offer full scholarships (fees, airfare and accommodation) to delegates across South Africa and Africa, as well as a select number awards for SU candidates based in Stellenbosch. Eligible candidates can be from any discipline and will be enrolled at their home institutions by February 2019 and have been enrolled for no more than 12 months by 1 February 2019.

  • If your application is dependent on the bursary, we suggest that you wait for the outcome before applying to avoid duplication.
  • Stellenbosch University registered candidates can apply via this stream – we include a field to indicate your affiliation with the university.
  • Preference will be given to candidates from Africa.

Successful candidates will be awarded the following as part of the programme:

  • Two, week-long courses at the ADA Summer School.
  • The option to attend a preparatory course (03 – 05 January), as well as a one day course (12 January).
  • Self-catering accommodation in Stellenbosch.*
  • Transport to visit the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on Sunday 13 January.
  • Return Economy airfare to and from Cape Town International Airport, if applicable.**
  • Ground Transport to and from Cape Town International Airport.
  • We request that the candidate’s home institution sponsors the candidate’s daily subsistence allowance and visa fees if needed, as a token of good faith in support of their PhD candidate.

Application Process:

  1. Applicants must complete the online form to submit their details and apply to take part in the programme. This includes a field with a 300 word motivation of how the Summer School would benefit your research and track as a PhD candidate.
  2. Applicants have to upload the following documents as part of the application process. No documents will be accepted by email. Please make use of the following naming convention: your surname.document_type.programme (for example smit.curriculumvitae.edp.doc).
Your application will not be considered as complete if complet you do not submit all the required documentation in full. In this case and you will be unable to submit the form if all documents are not uploaded
    1. ​A 300 word motivation on why you would benefit from the residency in general, and specifically how the workshops selected would assist and add to the successful completion of your degree (in line on the form)
    2. Curriculum Vitae (Resume)
    3. Brief description of your research (roughly 400 words)
    4. A written approval / referee report
      1. On your university letterhead & containing your supervisor’s signature by the current (home) supervisor or head of department to endorse the applicant’s application. This will indicate the home supervisor’s approval for the applicant to participate in the ADA’s Summer School and provide legitimacy of applicant’s intention.
      2. We will a​ward a bonus point during the evaluation process if your supervisor also states your case and your suitability for the programme, in addition to simply endorsing your application.
    5. Proof of registration where possible, otherwise a separate motivation from the home supervisor is required, confirming registration by February 2019.

After a vigorous selection process, the results will be made available shortly afterwards the closing date with the intention being to allow candidates to arrange for their visas and leave to travel.

The ADA reserves the right not to make any selections for the programme if enough applications have not been received. We also reserve the right to rescind any scholarship awards made, including if the delegate is unable to commit to the programme’s full duration.

Candidates that have benefitted from African Doctoral Academy or other funding via Stellenbosch University International in the last 18 – 24 months will be placed on the B list of applications to ensure the equitable distribution of funds available.

The Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) is pleased to announce that applications for the Southern Africa Regional Civic Education Workshop in Elections and Governance are now open.

The workshop will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from the 11th to 12th April 2018.

The aim of the workshops is to create awareness, enhance knowledge & develop relevant skills in electoral & governance processes in order for them to effectively communicate & apply them in influencing and mobilizing other youth to actively participate in the processes.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applications are invited from people between 18 and 45 years old who are from Angola, Botswana, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho, Seychelles, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia or Zimbabwe.
  • MINDS will select up to 30 participants from these countries to attend the Southern Africa workshop.

TEACH Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Learning Lab in Johannesburg, South Africa (Fully Funded)

Is your organization lacking the resources, support, capacity, or infrastructure to be self-sustaining? Want to learn how to more effectively meet the specific HIV treatment and prevention needs of your community?

TEACH (Trans Education + Action = Capacity for Health) is seeking expressions of interest from trans-led organizations in Sub-Saharan Africa to take part in a 3-day learning lab in Johannesburg, South Africa early next year.

TEACH is an initiative by MSMGF and IRGT: A Global Network of Trans Women and HIV designed to strengthen the capacity of trans-led organizations to more competitively apply for grant funding and build local organizational capacity to effectively respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

This learning lab will be led by regionally-focused, Sub-Saharan-based trans individuals who have been identified, trained, and supported to serve as TEACH Technical Advisors. 

The 3-day training will take place at a date to be determined in early 2018 and includes lodging, travel and per diem for participants. Instruction will be available in English.

Association of Commonwealth University (ACU) Wilton Park South Africa Seminar 2017 – Pretoria, South Africa (Fully Funded)

  • Organising for change: how can higher education meet the changing needs of employment?

The ACU recognises the huge demands now being placed on higher education to produce graduates capable of meeting the requirements of employment. ACU also recognise that universities throughout the Commonwealth are producing much good practice in the field, which we believe deserves exposure to a wider audience.

The ACU is therefore partnering with Wilton Park, the UK Department for International Development, National Research Foundation (South Africa), and the University of Pretoria to stage a high level international seminar. Delegates will include leading practitioners, policymakers and donor agencies.

Results from the seminar will be circulated to the full ACU membership and may be presented at the 20th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (20CCEM) in Fiji in February 2018.

The seminar will convene 50 delegates, and is invitation-only. ACU are seeking nominations for approximately 20 participants by Sunday 30 July 2017.

How to apply

The ACU is inviting staff at member institutions to nominate themselves or a colleague for one of 20 fully-funded places (covers travel, accommodation, and conference attendance costs).

Participants should either be leading strategic change in this area (most likely at senior management level) or have introduced novel practices capable of being shared with universities throughout the Commonwealth.

ACU are particularly seeking participants who are able to speak or otherwise contribute to discussions in the following areas:

  • The role of employability in higher education curriculum and pedagogy
  • Interpreting the needs of employers
  • Learning to Learn – examples of effective innovation
  • The role of government and other enablers in higher education
  • The role of technology in developing employability skills

Each of these issues corresponds to a specific session at the conference, further details of which can be found in the conference programme.

Participants should be willing to give a presentation in one or more of the above areas if invited, take part in remote discussions on the conference theme in the months prior to and after the event, and be free and able to attend the full conference.

Attendance grants will also be subject to an individual’s ability to gain South African visas, for which a letter of support will be provided by the conference organisers.

United Nations East and Southern Africa Regional Consultation on Youth, Peace & Security – Johannesburg, South Africa (Fully Funded)

As part of a series of regional consultations the United Nations is organizing a consultation for the East and Southern Africa region, to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 1 to 3
August 2017.
This regional consultation is part of a global effort to bolster action on United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250, which calls for young people to play a greater role in strengthening peace and security. The discussions from various regional consultations will feed into the Progress Study on Youth, Peace and Security, highlighting the positive contributions of young people in peacebuilding.
Eligibility Criteria:

In order to participate in the East and Southern Africa Regional Consultation you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be between 18 and 29 years old.
  • Must be able to demonstrate work/volunteer experience on issues related to peace and security, including: peace processes, social cohesion, reconciliation, transitional justice, security sector reform, disarmament demobilization and reintegration, etc. This may also include: development, humanitarian action, local and national governance, advocacy, activism, human rights, gender equality, etc. in relation to peace and security.

*Young people working with youth-led organizations, movements, initiatives and networks are highly encouraged to apply.

A total of 30 participants will be selected from 22 countries throughout East and Southern Africa, including: Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Djibouti, DRC, Comoros, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Madagascar, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

  • One participant will be selected from low-medium risk countries: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Malawi, Madagascar, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Two participants will be selected from high / very high-risk countries: Burundi, Djibouti, DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and South Sudan.

Electric South NEW DIMENSIONS VIRTUAL REALITY WORKSHOP 2017 for non-fiction VR projects – Cape Town, South Africa (Fully Funded)

Call for entries for the second New Dimensions Workshop, Cape Town, July 24-28.

The first New Dimensions VR projects from Kenya, Senegal and Ghana are now on the festival circuit. Each of these works offer a view of the vibrant, diverse and ever-changing cultural landscape of contemporary Africa.

Electric South are now looking for 6 new artists with exciting ideas for non-fiction VR projects from anywhere in Africa to attend the next VR workshop. You do not need to have any experience with VR but Electric South are looking for established artists and filmmakers in their field. We are also really interested in working with artists from diverse fields: documentary and fiction film, theatre, performance & visual arts, fashion, photography, writing, design and game development. Note, your ideas must be non-fiction but we welcome a range of approaches: 360 film, animation, interactive, hybrid etc.
Requirements
  • Artists must apply with between 1 and 3 non-fiction VR ideas.
  • If selected, you will workshop your ideas in Cape Town over 5 days with international advisors and VR experts.
  • The workshop will cover idea development as well as practical instruction in 360 filmmaking and interactive VR.
  • Benefits:

    All flights, local travel, accommodation, meals, visa costs and per diems will be covered by Electric South.

    The five day workshop will take place in Cape Town from 24 -28 July 2017. Applications are open from 13 March 2017 to 1 May 2017 and the announcement of successful candidates will be made on 15 May.

  • Following the workshop we will work with the selected artists to secure funding to further develop and produce their projects. Electric South reserves the right not to develop projects further.

The workshop is supported by the Ford Foundation and the Bertha Foundation.

OSISA SCHOLARSHIPS 2017 FOR AFRICAN WOMEN MEDIA LEADERS AT RHODES UNIVERSITY, South Africa (Fully Funded)

The Sol Plaatje Institute (SPI) for Media Leadership at Rhodes University in South Africa, in collaboration with the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA), invites applications for 10 postgraduate scholarships from Southern African women media leaders who wish to study media management at the SPI in 2017.

 Applicants should be women who are already practising journalists or are working in various fields of the media industry in Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Successful applicants will register for the SPI’s intensive, one-year-long fulltime Postgraduate Diploma in Media Management (PGDip in Media Management), the only formal qualification in media management in Africa and the developing world. The PGDip in Media Management is pegged at the honours degree level. Candidates must already possess an undergraduate degree from a recognised university in order to pursue postgraduate study. The OSISA scholarships cover:

 The full cost of tuition

  • Accommodation and meals in one of Rhodes University’s residences
  • Course materials
  • A monthly subsistence allowance
  • Medical aid cover
  • Mid-year media management internship costs.

 Employers of the successful scholarship applicants or the scholarship winners themselves have to cover their travel costs to and from Rhodes University, including during the University’s holidays, to encourage greater ownership and appreciation of the scholarship programme by the beneficiaries and their media organizations.

 The PGDip in Media Management, popularly known as the PDMM, equips participants with critical knowledge, understandings and work competencies that emerging media leaders need to perform more effectively, strategically and ethically in their organizations and to fast-track their careers to management positions.

 The programme combines rigorous theoretical and practical grounding. It has a mid-year practical media management internship and a comprehensive reflective academic portfolio at the end of the year.  It is composed of eight compulsory modules covering media management contexts, policy and institutions; financial management and media economics; management of media markets, audiences and advertising; management of media content; management of circulation and distribution; media management and leadership; human resources management for media; and management of digital and social media and media convergence.

Application details and procedures:

Only women candidates who are already working in the media industry in the 10 Southern African countries of OSISA listed above are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Candidates should already have an undergraduate degree in any discipline from a recognised university.

The application deadline for these scholarships is 18 November 2016.

 Students wishing to apply for these scholarships need to:

• Complete the Rhodes University’s standard Honours Application form (available at www.ru.ac.za/applying/  under the section ‘Postgraduate Studies’  which must be submitted directly to the Registrar’s Division at Rhodes University and a copy emailed to Wendy Dyibishe ([email protected])  at the Sol Plaatje Institute.

• Submit a detailed Curriculum Vitae, including contact details, to Wendy Dyibishe.

• Submit certified academic transcripts of ALL tertiary qualifications. These are sent to both Wendy Dyibishe at the SPI and to the Registrar’s Division at Rhodes University; and

• Submit to the SPI — through Wendy Dyibishe at [email protected] — a 1,000-word letter of motivation which explains why the student is interested in doing the PGDip in Media Management, how the course will assist the student’s career and why the student believes she qualifies for the OSISA scholarship.

African Investigative Journalism Conference Bursary for African Journalists to attend AIJC 2016 in Johannesburg, South Africa (Fully Funded)

The African Investigative Journalism Conference (AIJC) is a three-day conference at Wits University in Johannesburg for and about investigative journalism.

AIJC have a budget to offer sponsorship to a limited number of African journalists. Places are open to journalists with a proven track record in investigative journalism.

At the African Investigative Journalism Conference, the organizers will provide courses in a range of skills: how to do a financial investigation, how to research the Panama Papers, multimedia storytelling, tools to secure your emails, how to collaborate across borders with African colleagues, undercover reporting, reporting with your mobile phone and lots of data journalism. There will also be time to get to know your fellow investigative journalists from around the continent.

Unfortunately the conference will be conducted in English without translations.

Benefits

  • The bursary will cover flights to South Africa, airport transfers, accommodation in single rooms, transport to and from the conference, meals and conference fees.
  • It does not cover home-country transport or visa costs, which must be self-funded.
  • In country transports costs for personal trips and charges for incidentals at the place of accommodation is also excluded and will be for your personal account.

Application Process

  • To apply for a bursary, please submit a short motivation letter (max. 400 words) and send it with your CV and at least one example of your published or broadcast work (preferably a link) to [email protected].
  • Please also let us know if you have attended the conference before and in which year.
  • If you are a new journalist and want to attend, tell us which investigate story you are planning to work on with the skills you will gain.
  • If you have worked on an investigation the past year and would like to present this story, please also include information on that project.
  • In order to apply you will require a valid passport, and need to be available to travel from Saturday, 5 November – return on Wednesday, 9 November or Thursday, 10 November (depending on flight availability).

Selection Criteria:

  • All applications will be acknowledged on receipt and a final decision on places will be made by Monday, 3rd October.

Fourth African School on Internet Governance 2016 in Durban, South Africa (Fully Funded)

The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) and the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency – e-Africa Programme are pleased to announce the call for applications for the Fourth African School on Internet Governance which will take place in Durban, South Africa, from 11 to 15 October 2016.

Have you ever thought about the massive and significant role that the internet plays in the world? In Africa, even though connectivity is still not nearly sufficient, the internet touches on multiple aspects of daily life, economic and social development, governance and government. This adds new dimensions and challenges to privacy, security, human rights, women’s rights, and business, to mention a few. These are issues that are not new to the realm of governance, but dealing with them in the context of a fast-changing, cross-border internet adds new dynamics and complexity.

The goal of AfriSIG is to give Africans from multiple sectors and stakeholder groups the opportunity to gain knowledge and confidence to enable them to participate effectively in internet governance processes and debates at the national, regional and global levels. AfriSIG also builds the capacity of people with existing expertise as the School facilitates peer learning and many participants are already established experts in internet policy and regulation. In addition to a five-day intensive learning event, AfriSIG provides all the participants with the opportunity to participate in the African IGF.

Building on the model of the European and Latin American Internet Governance Schools, APC and the NEPAD Planning and Coordinating Agency launched the first AfriSIG in July 2013 in Durban, South Africa. The second AfriSIG took place in November 2014 in Mauritius and the third in Addis Ababa at the African Union from 1 to 5 September 2015.

Through learning and knowledge sharing, AfriSIG aims to build a multidisciplinary cadre of African expertise in internet governance. The School will bring together a diverse group of professionals from government, business, academia and civil society who are interested and involved in internet policy and development. The School prides itself in offering a world-class learning environment, with a faculty that has the experience and expertise to convey both practical and theoretical knowledge. AfriSIG graduates will better understand internet governance from a public interest perspective, have a grasp of internet policy processes and institutions, and be able to engage more effectively in national, regional and international processes and networks.

Requirements:

The school is intended for leaders and professionals from:

  • Government ministries and departments, national and regional communications regulatory authorities, and public sector information and communications services such as public libraries.
  • Parliamentary portfolio committees that deal with communications issues.
  • Network operators, service providers and other businesses who form part of the internet industry.
  • Civil society and non-governmental organisations who interact with or operate in the internet-related information and communications sector.
  • Human rights institutions dealing with internet issues, such as national or regional human rights commissions.
  • Community-based information and communications services and the broader community informatics sector.
  • The judiciary and other members of the legal community working with internet and communications law.
  • Members of law enforcement agencies who deal with internet issues.
  • The internet technical community.
  • Academic and research institutions that deal with internet issues.
  • Media organisations and outlets that focus on the internet.

  • The World Summit in the Information Society (WSIS) and the internet in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The International Reporting Project (IRP) is pleased to offer up to five international reporting fellowships to cover the 2016 AIDS conference and TB pre-conference in Durban, South Africa.

The 21st International AIDS Conference will take place in Durban, South Africa, from July 16-22. The theme, “Access Equity Rights Now,” highlights the unequal access of HIV-positive patients to health care around the world.

Although many gains have been made in treating and preventing the spread of HIV, significant challenges still exist. More than 60 percent of HIV-positive people still cannot access antiretroviral medications. Moreover, marginalized groups—including sex workers, women, young people, GLBT communities, drug users and others—are at an increased risk for HIV infection.

n addition, tuberculosis remains one of the world’s deadliest communicable diseases. The two-day TB pre-conference will address progress made in combating the airborne disease, which frequently infects those with compromised immune systems, including people living with HIV. The pressure to halt TB in its tracks has mounted as rates of multi- and total-drug resistant strains have emerged and spread.

South Africa itself is a significant host for these conferences, with some of the highest rates of HIV and TB in the world.

How to Apply

All candidates must complete an application form and provide an essay of at least 500 words describing the narrative they would pursue at the conference.

Benefits

  • IRP will purchase the fellows’ round-trip air tickets to South Africa and will pay for visas, hotel costs, local transportation and several meals. The IRP will also arrange journalists’ press accreditation for the conference.
  • The fellows will arrive in Durban by July 15 and depart on or after July 23. Those who wish to extend their stay after the fellowship will have the option to arrange that at their own expense.
  • All of the stories will be republished on the IRP site and co-owned by the fellow (or his/her distribution partners, depending on arrangements) and the IRP. In addition, the work produced as a result of the trip may be posted, with permission of the fellow, on the social media channels of the IRP funders. This trip is supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • WeThinkCode_ is open to anyone between the age of 17 and 35.
  • You don’t need any previous  education, not even matric is required. You need to able to attend our campus in Johannesburg and be eligible to study and/or work in South Africa.
  • WeThinkCode_ aims to produce 100,000 developers in Africa and as such, the course is open to anyone. With that said, if you are not a valid South African citizen, the onus is on you to prove that you have the required visas and legal permissions to live, work and study in South Africa for the duration of the course and your subsequent work obligations.

Campus Location:

  • The campus is in the Johannesburg CBD. Due to the structure and intensity of the course, you will be required to come to campus everyday. There is no on-campus living.

Bootcamp

The Bootcamp is 3-week of intense problem solving and is the last step in your application process.

You will have to come to campus every single day during the Bootcamp (including weekends!), and work for at least 10 hours a day. You will have to work with your fellow students to solve problems through computer programming. The top applicants who successfully make it through the 4-week  selection Bootcamp, will be invited to attend WeThinkCode_ full time.

The Bootcamp is hard work, really tough, but so much fun.

Can I do the course part-time?

  • No. The peer-to-peer structure of the learning, the breadth of the curriculum and the volume of work required to complete the course successfully means you need to be physically present at the campus at the very least for 8-10 hours a day, 6 days a week – and probably a little more.

Bootcamp Selection:

  • There are two 3-week intense selection Bootcamps left from 29th Feb until 20th March and from 4th April until 23rd April . If you pass the aptitude test, you will be asked to choose which Bootcamp you wish to attend. Successful candidates from the Bootcamps will start the course full time in May 2016.
  • 120 students will be accepted into the first class of 2016.

Duration:

  • Students are expected to complete the course in approximately 2 years. The work is project based, and it is estimated that most candidates will earn their first 4 month internship after 8 months of full time course work.
  • This internship will be followed by a further 8 months (approximately) of course work, in order to qualify for the second and final 4 month internship.

Benefits/Fee:

  • The course is 100% free for WeThinkCode_ students. Corporate sponsors pay your tuition, and in exchange you will complete two (paid) 4 month internships with them during the course of your studies. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be required to work back the value of your sponsorship (typically 1-2 years) with your sponsor.
  • Qualifying students will receive a stipend to cover transport and food until their first paid internship (approximately 8 months into the course). Students are expected to save up whereafter they will be fully responsible for themselves for the duration of the course.

African Regional Youth Forum for World Heritage: Increasing youth involvement in the promotion and protection of African World Heritage

The African World Heritage Fund and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in partnership with the Robben Island Museum are pleased to announce a call for participants for a regional youth forum from the 28th April to the 4th May 2016 at the Robben Island World Heritage Site in Cape Town, South Africa.

This forum will address young people and seek to provide a sustainable platform for youth in Africa that could increase the involvement of youth in the promotion and protection of World Heritage in Africa, and also deliver essential feedback to UNESCO, the World Heritage Committee and the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) on youth challenges, accomplishments and actions related to the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the region.

This is the first regional youth forum on World Heritage in Africa addressing Anglophone youth. A second forum is planned for 2017 targeting francophone youth in Africa.

It responds to the interest expressed by States Parties to hold a youth forum at a regional level as well as to the Second Cycle of Periodic Reporting in the Africa Region, which called for increased involvement and benefits for local communities in World Heritage
Eligibility Requirement:
  • Young citizens from the African continent;
  • Aged from 20 to 28 years old with fluent English (no interpretation will be provided);
  • Available to attend for the full length of the event and invest time to prepare and follow up the forum;
  • Motivated, active and driven individuals interested in engaging in a World Heritage network of young African youth and eager to implement the outcomes of the forum in their home countries
  • Individuals passionate about heritage in their country.
Structure of the forum
  • Lectures and presentations from experts and heritage specialists will provide an introduction to the 1972 World Heritage Convention, the Action Plan for World Heritage in the Africa Region, and the challenges of conservation and development.
  • Hands-on / practical activities that provide some basic skills on heritage conservation, preservation and/or promotion of African heritage.
  • Group discussions and workshops.
  • Guided visit to an African World Heritage site with expert input.
  • Presentations by the participants on heritage related issues in their own country.
  • Participation in a Youth Model of the World Heritage Committee, an educational simulation drawing attention of the young people to the issues related to heritage preservation and promotion in the Africa region and how the World Heritage Committee works.
Working language
  • The working language for the forum is English.
*A French-speaking forum is planned for 2017 in Africa (subject to the availability of funds)
Funding
  • The costs for the forum will be covered by the organizers; the African World Heritage Fund and Robben Island Museum (i.e. airfare, accommodation, meals and local transport within South Africa during the forum)

Application Process:

Each applicant should submit the following application package:
  • The completed application form.
  • A motivation letter (maximum 1 page) detailing your motivations and experiences related to World Heritage;
  • A curriculum vitae (2 pages maximum);
  • A signed letter of recommendation from a university, organization or administrative authority/supervisor;
  • A short video (maximum 2 minutes) showcasing how youth are or could promote and/or safeguard World Heritage sites (or a site) in your African country;
  • Your videos should be: creative, innovative,surprising, but most important of all is to have fun!
  • Your videos need to comply with the following criteria: Clip length 2minutes max imum and format: “AVI” only.
Selection criteria
The following items will be strongly considered during selection:
  • Profile confirms with requirements;
  • Completed application package (form, CV, motivation letter, recommendation letter & video);
  • Diversity and complementarities of experiences among participants;
  • Potential to act as multiplier;
  • Gender and geographic balance;
Conditions
  • The attendance during the full length of the forum is mandatory.
  • Participants should be committed to invest time to prepare and follow up the Youth Forum.
