Applications are now open for the 2024/2025 Slovak Republic Government Scholarships for Foreign Students. The Government of the Slovak Republic approved the establishment of the National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic for the support of mobility of students, PhD students, university teachers, researchers and artists in 2005. The National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic (NSP) is financed by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic from the state budget of the Slovak Republic.

Eligibility Requirements

Eligible applicants for a scholarship in the framework of the NSP:

A) students who:

are university students at universities outside Slovakia;
are students of the second level of higher education (master’s students), or are students who at the time of the application deadline have already completed at least 2.5 years of their university studies in the same/similar study programme;
will be on a study stay in Slovakia during their higher education outside Slovakia and who will be accepted by a public, private or state higher education institution in Slovakia for an academic mobility^[1] to study in Slovakia.

All 3 conditions must be met. This category does not apply to doctoral (PhD) studies (or their equivalent).

Duration of a scholarship stay (students): 1 – 2 full semesters (i.e. 4 – 5 or 9 – 10 months) or 1 – 3 full trimesters, in case the academic year is divided into trimesters (i.e. 3 – 4 or 6 – 7 or 9 – 10 months).

B) PhD students whose higher education or scientific training takes place outside Slovakia and who are accepted by a public, private or state higher education institution or a research institution in Slovakia eligible to carry out a doctoral study programme^[2] (e.g. the Slovak Academy of Sciences) for an academic mobility^[1]to study/conduct research/artistic stay in Slovakia.

Duration of a scholarship stay (PhD students): 1 – 10 months.

C) international university teachers, researchers and artists who are invited to a teaching/research/artistic stay in Slovakia by an institution with a valid certificate of eligibility to carry out research and development, which is not a business company^[3] and it has its seat in Slovakia.

Duration of a scholarship stay (university teachers, researchers or artists): 1 – 10 months.

Travel Grant

Travel allowance amount depends on the distance (in a direct line) between applicant’s place of residence (the permanent address; resp. address of home institution) and the place of his/her stay in Slovakia (the address of the host institution)^[5]:

distance up to 200 km – 0 €,
distance more than 200 km, max. 300 km – 50 €,
distance more than 300 km, max. 500 km – 100 €,
distance more than 500 km, max. 1 000 km – 250 €,
distance more than 1 000 km, max.2 000 km – 350 €,
distance more than 2 000 km, max.3 000 km – 500 €,
distance more than 3 000 km, max. 5 000 km – 750 €,
distance more than 5 000 km, max. 7 000 km – 1 100 €,
distance more than 7 000 km – 1 500 €.

Application deadlines

30 April at 16.00 CET ^[6] – scholarship stays during the next academic year
31 October at 16.00 CET^[6] – scholarship stays during the summer semester of the current academic year

Scholarship applications are submitted online at www.scholarships.sk. Online application system is opened at least 6 weeks prior to the application deadline. Applications can be filled in only in case that the online application system has already been opened.

The Government of the Slovak Republic approved the establishment of the National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic for the support of mobility of students, PhD students, university teachers, researchers and artists in 2005. The National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic (NSP) is funded by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic.

The National Scholarship Programme of the Slovak Republic supports mobility of international students, PhD students, university teachers, researchers and artists for scholarship stays at higher education institutions and research organisations in Slovakia.

Eligible applicants

Eligible applicants for a scholarship in the framework of the NSP:

A) students who:

are university students at universities outside Slovakia;
are students of the second level of higher education (master’s students), or are students who at the time of application deadline have already completed at least 2.5 years of their university studies in the same study programme;
will be on a study stay in Slovakia during their higher education outside Slovakia and who will be accepted by a public, private or state university in Slovakia for an academic mobility¹ to study in Slovakia.

Citizens of any country in the world (except the citizens of Slovakia) can apply for a scholarship stay in Slovakia in the framework of the NSP.

Amount of the monthly scholarship

a) university student	350 €
b) PhD student	580 €
c) university teacher/researcher/artist:
without PhD degree (or its equivalent) and less than 4 years of work experience as a university teacher/researcher/artist	580 €
with PhD degree (or its equivalent) and less than 10 years of work experience as a university teacher/researcher/artist	850 €
with PhD degree (or its equivalent) and more than 10 years of work experience as a university teacher/researcher/artist	1,000 €

Note:

To determine the monthly scholarship amount (in case of university teachers, researchers and artists) with regard to their work experience, only work experience until the day of the application deadline is taken into consideration.
PhD studies are considered as work experience (max. 6 years of PhD studies can be considered as work experience).

Application deadlines

30 April till16:00 CET – scholarship stays during the next academic year
31 October till16:00 CET – scholarship stays during the summer semester of the current academic year

Note: International applicants who need visa in order to enter the territory of the Slovak Republic are recommended to take into consideration time necessary for visa application procedure when determining the date of the beginning of their potential scholarship stay (up-to-date information about visa application procedure is provided by the Embassies of the Slovak Republic abroad).

Application procedure

Note: Applicants are recommended not to submit their applications at the last moment. Number of operations executed within the last minutes prior to the application deadline may have an influence on the reaction time of the application system. Please, keep that in mind, in order not to miss the application deadline.

Applicants must fill in their online applications and upload all the required attachments in required format to their online application.

Students (eligible applicants under the category A) are allowed to submit (fill in) applications and the required attachments in Slovak or English language only (documents written in other languages must be officially translated into Slovak or English language – translation can be certified by the same institution that issued the respective document).

Other applicants (eligible applicants under the categories B) and C) are allowed to submit (fill in) applications in the following languages:

Slovak language – in this case, all attached documents must be in Slovak or English language only;
English language – in this case, all attached documents must be in Slovak or English language only;
Russian language – in this case, all attached documents must be in Slovak, English or Russian language only.

2016/2017 Slovak Republic Government Scholarships for Foreign Students to study in Slovakia

Slovak government scholarships, under OECD-defined conditions for conducting official development assistance, include awarding the Slovak government scholarship to persons with Slovaks Living Abroad status.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic advertises scholarships for accredited study programs at public universities for the academic year 2016/2017. These scholarships are designed for applicants meeting required general criteria and criteria related to selected type of study stay.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic advertises for the academic year 2016/2017:

2 places for 3-months academic stay

for graduates of foreign universities continuing in the areas of education and research, to be implemented in the workplaces of public universities in the SR.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR will grant to applicants scholarships for academic stay performed at public universities of the SR or at academic institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Persons applying for a scholarship for academic stay in the framework of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR offer must fulfil these conditions:

have completed university education in a minimum of second degree study programme (having gained the academic title “MSc.” at a foreign university or “Mgr.”, “Ing.”, “MUDr.” or “MVDr.” at a university in the SR) and work at foreign university or at foreign academic institute,
submit a completed application form for the provision of a scholarship of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR including scientific and research programme realized in the SR, preliminary acceptance of the anticipated academic department in the SR, as well as the respective appendices (electronically at http://scholarships.studyin.sk/en/application),
only university graduates in age from 30 to 50 years may apply for the scholarship of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR.

For the approved period of time the scholarship holders, as decided by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR pursuant to internal state, will be provided the following:

a monthly scholarship in total amount of 550 €,
accommodation of collegial type and catering in employees dining halls of receiving organization for a consideration.

Healthcare with the exception of spa treatment and prosthetic works based on individual insurance policy concluded by the scholarship holder prior his/her arrival to the SR.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR does not provide any financial sources to cover travel costs related to the stay in the SR.

Stipends for students

DURING STUDY IN 1^st and 2^nd DEGREE UNIVERSITY STUDY PROGRAMMES (hereinafter referred to as bachelor, master and doctoral study)
IN THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic advertises for the academic year 2016/2017:

10 places for students for semestral/5 – months study stay

for foreign universities undergraduates in full time form of university study of first and second level (bachelor, master) to be pursued in the public universities in the SR, without restriction of the course of study, in Slovak or English language, subject to the admission by the university in the SR.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR will grant to applicants scholarships for university study in Slovak or English language in a selected study field according to the valid system of study departments at public universities of the SR.

Persons applying for a scholarship of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR for part of bachelor, master and doctoral degree study programmes of university studies in the framework of the offer must meet the following conditions:

study at foreign university study programme related to that one the applicant is applying for in the SR,
submit a completed application form for the provision of a scholarship of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR with preliminary acceptation letter from anticipated academic department in the SR and also with the respective appendices (electronically at http://scholarships.studyin.sk/en/application),
only students of bachelor, master, engineer and doctoral degree study programmes in age from 18 to 26 years may apply for the scholarship of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR.

A holder of a scholarship of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR will be approved for the period of the study in the selected study department, stipulated by the statute of the respective university, i.e. at the time when the scholarship holder is according to internal legal regulations a university student, with the following:

a monthly scholarship in total amount of 280 €,
accommodation in student halls of residence and catering in student dining halls at a fee equal to that for students with the SR citizenship,
education at the selected public university, under the same conditions as provided for citizens of the SR during the study period set by the statute of the university.

DURING STUDY IN 3^RD DEGREE UNIVERSITY STUDY PROGRAMMES (hereinafter referred to as doctoral) IN THE SR

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic advertises for the academic year 2016/2017:

7 places for graduates for semestral/5 – months study stay

designed for foreign universities undergraduates in full time form of university study of third level (PhD students) to be pursued in the public universities in the SR, without restriction of the course of study, in Slovak or English language, subject to the acceptance by the university in the SR.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR will grant applicants scholarships for doctoral study programme in Slovak or English language at public universities of the SR in accordance with acceptation of the university in the SR or academic educational department of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Persons applying for a scholarship for doctoral study in the framework of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR offer must fulfil these conditions:

have completed university education in a second degree study programme (having gained the academic title “MSc.” at a foreign university or “Mgr.”, “Ing.”, “MUDr.” or “MVDr.” at a university in the SR) and study selected study department at foreign university.
submit a completed application form for the provision of a scholarship of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR with a statement of the study department of the doctoral study according to the applicable list of study departments of doctoral study carried out in the SR with a preliminary acceptance of the anticipated department or institute in the SR, as well as the respective appendices (electronically at http://scholarships.studyin.sk/en/application),
only students of doctoral degree study programmes in age from 23 to 35 years may apply for the scholarship of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sportof the SR.

To study a selected study department for the approved period of time as decided by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR, i.e. during the time the student is considered to be a scholarship holder pursuant to internal state regulation, for this time period the following will be provided:

a monthly scholarship in total amount of 330 €,
accommodation in student halls of residence and catering in student dining halls at a fee equal to that for students with the SR citizenship,
education at the selected public university, under the same conditions as provided for citizens of the SR during the approved study stay
