2016 NYDA Solomon Mahlangu Scholarship Fund (SMSF) for Young South Africans.

In its quest to address the challenge of youth unemployment, access to education, among many other challenges, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) changed its core business to focus on education and skills development as the organisation’s main priority. This move was informed by studies which suggested that salary remained the main source of income for young South Africans.
To support this new strategic focus, the NYDA established the Solomon Mahlangu Scholarship Fund (SMSF).  The R10-million fund seeks to create industrialists as an investment towards youth empowerment. The purpose of this fund is to avail financial support to youth to enable them to pursue quality education in an institution of higher learning with youth in rural areas as primary target.The scholarship fund was established in honour of Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu who at the age of 23, was executed under the apartheid laws after being wrongfully accused of murder and terrorism. Fearing crowd reaction at the funeral, police decided to bury Mahlangu in Atteridgeville, Pretoria.

The scholarship fund is designed to create an environment for affording marginalized youth with excellent academic background, an opportunity to further their studies. Financial support will be provided to youth who pursue full time degrees that fall within the priority growth sectors, critical and scarce skills areas outlined in the labor planning frameworks of the country.

Eligibility Criteria

        • Students must be applying for admission to one of the participating universities as a 1st year full time student in the courses listed in the table above
        • High school learners who plan to attend one of the participating universities after completing the National Senior Certificate
        • Must meet University Admission Points Score (APS) and achieve an average of 70% in the NSC exams
        • Must be South African citizens between 14 – 35
        • Financial neediness – combined household salary of less than R15 000 a month
        • Reside in rural/semi-rural areas
        • Engage in community service

2016 Mandela Magdalene College Scholarships for South Africans to study at the University of Cambridge in the UK

The Mandela Magdalene College Scholarships were announced in March 1995 when Nelson Mandela, then President of The Republic of South Africa, agreed to lend his name to the initiative.

The scheme results from a collaboration between Mr Chris von Christierson and other benefactors, the Cambridge Trusts and Magdalene College, Cambridge.

The scholarships enable graduates from South Africa to pursue one-year taught postgraduate courses of study at the University of Cambridge in subjects relevant to the needs of South Africa.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The scheme aims to support South African graduate students of outstanding academic merit and leadership potential who would otherwise be unable to take up a place at Cambridge University.
  • The scholarships are open to citizens of South Africa, normally under the age of 35 and normally resident in South Africa who have, or expect to obtain before 1 October 2016, a first class or high second class honours degree or its equivalent from a recognised University.
  • Successful applicants will be expected to return to South Africa to work or study after completing the course at Cambridge.

Scholarship Worth:

The scholarships are means tested. The maximum award covers:

• University Composition Fee at the overseas rate

• a maintenance allowance sufficient for a single student

• a return airfare, courtesy of British Airways

Application Procedure:

  • This scheme is administered on behalf of the University of Cambridge and Magdalene College by the Board of Graduate Studies (for admission to the University) and the Cambridge Trusts (for funding).
  • Further information, and application materials, are available in the University’s Graduate Studies Prospectus. All applicants for admission to the University must complete and return a GRADSAF application form to the Board of Graduate Studies; applications must be completed by 2 December 2015.

Selection :

  • Applications will first be assessed by the candidate’s proposed Faculty or Department at the University. If successful, the candidate’s application will be further reviewed by the Cambridge Trusts and Magdalene College. The scholarship will be tenable from 1 October 2016.

2015 Swedish Institute Study Scholarships for South African students (Covers Tuition Fee & SEK 9,000 per month stipend)

Deadline for Applying for Master’s Programme in Swedish Universities: 15 January 2015.

Scholarship application period: 2-13 February 2015.

The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships target highly-qualified students and are awarded for studies in Sweden starting in an autumn semester. The scholarships are intended for full-time master’s level studies in Sweden and cover both living costs and tuition fees.

The Swedish Institute has decided to allocate up to 10 scholarships for South African students on an annual basis for three years. The scholarships are for full-time master’s level studies in Sweden for the academic years of 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17, i.e. a total maximum of 30 scholarships.

The scholarship offer is within the scope of the regular scholarship process for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships. Scholarships are granted on condition that the students have been admitted to a master’s programme (i.e. not bachelor’s) at a Swedish university. However, all admitted students cannot be guaranteed a scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements:

The scholarships are only intended for students who are required to pay tuition fees according to the information at University Admissions.

There is no age limit for scholarship holders.

Applicants must be South African citizens but may, at the time of application and admission, reside in a country other than South Africa, including Sweden. Priority will be given to applicants who have completed bachelor’s studies from a South African university.

Eligible programmes

The list includes master programmes presented at University Admissions within the following subject areas: Social Science focusing on Democracy, Social Studies, Law, Human rights, Gender Studies, and Business, Information and Communication Technologies and Environment and Sustainability. The programmes are selected by the Swedish Universities. List of eligible programmes: South Africa Eligible programmes 2015-16

Scholarship benefits and period

The scholarship covers both the tuition fee (which is paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 9,000 per month.

The scholarship is only awarded for programmes starting in the autumn semester (August/September) and is granted for one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time. It will be extended for programmes longer than two semesters provided that the student’s study results are satisfactory.

The scholarship is designed to cover living costs and study expenses for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members. The granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended beyond the study programme period nor can the scholarship be transferred to another study programme at a Swedish university.

Travel grants

Scholarship holders will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship upon arrival. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 15,000.

Insurance

Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

How to apply

Follow these steps to apply for a scholarship.

Please note that the scholarship application is separate from the application to the master’s programmes at Swedish universities. Make sure to complete your application to the master’s programmes that you wish to apply to before the deadline 15 January 2015.

You apply by using the national online application service Universityadmissions.se. Pay your application fee to University Admissions before the fee deadline 2 February 2015. Please make sure to check for any updates at Universityadmissions.se.

Once you have submitted your application to the master’s programme/s it will be assigned a personal Application number consisting of six digits. You must use this Application number when applying for a Swedish Institute scholarship (scholarship application period 2-13 February 2015).

You will be required to submit a Motivation letter and Europass CV with your scholarship application. These can be prepared well in advance of the actual scholarship application period. Kindly note that no other documents than the mandatory enclosures will be considered.

Steps to complete your Swedish Institute scholarship application:

  1. Prepare a Motivation Letter according to the Swedish Institute template Motivation letter 2015 SI Study Scholarships South Africa. Motivation letters in any other templates or formats are NOT valid. Make sure to read the questions in the Motivation Letter thoroughly and be specific and personal in your reasoning. Without exception, answers may not exceed the allowed number of characters (letters and spaces) for each question.
  2. Prepare a Curriculum Vitae (CV) in English only using the Europass format of maximum four pages. Any CV submitted in another format than the Europass in English is NOT valid. Additional pages will not be considered. Include a passport copy together with the CV (as a fourth last page).
  3. When the Swedish Institute scholarship application period opens on 2 February 2015, apply through our online system. Use the personal application number retrieved from www.universityadmissions.se. Do not forget to submit your Motivation Letter and CV.

The Solomon Mahlangu Scholarship Fund, a fund of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), is now accepting applications for the 2015 scholarships. The schnlarship offers young matriculants a chance to apply for the scholarship that will ensure they get to attend the best academic institutions in South Africa.
 
This is the second year the Solomon Mahlangu Scholarship Fund will be awarded to students who excel in the classroom and wish to pursue studies in scarce skills at Universities, Universities of Technology as well as all public Further Education and Training (FET) Colleges.
 
The Scholarship Fund provides financial support to young people who have been accepted to pursue full-time degrees in courses that fall within the priority growth sectors and critical and scarce skills areas as outlined in the labour planning frameworks of the country.

What

The South African Reserve Bank has an extensive art collection that includes works in many different media produced from the early twentieth century to the present day. As part of its commitment to supporting and growing a new generation of South African artists, the Bank offers an annual art scholarship to a final year Fine Art student at a university or university of technology in Gauteng Province, South Africa.

Details of scholarship
The art scholarship is open to students who will be entering the final year of an undergraduate Fine Art degree in 2014.
The scholarship is open to students registered at a university or university of technology in the Gauteng Province.
The value of the art scholarship is R50 000.
As part of the art scholarship, the student will participate in a mentorship programme and will be expected to donate one artwork from his or her graduate show to the Bank.

South African Square Kilometre Array is calling for Applications for its undergraduate and Honors bursary programme for South African applicants. The bursary is awarded for a Bachelor of Science–Honours degree majoring in Physics and Mathematics and for a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Electronic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering only) at a South African university. The bursary covers tuition fees, living costs (rent, food, travel etc.) and for books and stationery.

Eligibility Requirement

The following students are eligible for an SKA SA undergraduate or honours bursary

  1. South African citizens ONLY.
  2. Students who wish to study, or are studying, towards a Bachelor of Science degree; majoring in Physics and Mathematics, at a South African university.
  3. Students who wish to study towards a Bachelor of Science – Honours degree at a South African university; and who majored in Physics and Mathematics at undergraduate level,
  4. Students who wish to study, or are studying, towards a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Electronic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering only), at a South African university.
  5. Students who have achieved a minimum C in mathematics and science in Grade 12, or a minimum 60% for major subjects at undergraduate level.
  6. Students who intend to pursue postgraduate research in radio astronomy, or in an engineering discipline relevant to radio astronomy.

NOTE:
Students who wish to study towards an honours degree through the National Astrophysics and Space Science Programme (NASSP), must apply directly to NASSP, and NOT through the SKA SA. See: http://www.star.ac.za/

Conditions of an SKA SA undergraduate or honours bursary

  • The award of an SKA SA undergraduate or honours bursary to a student will be based on academic performance, determined through the evaluation of the student’s most recent Grade 12, or university results. Other selection criteria include academic merit, leadership qualities, and previous award of prizes and honours.
  • Students currently completing Grade 12 must include a certified copy of their most recent Grade 12 results with their applications and, when available, a certified copy of their final Grade 12 results.
  • Students currently completing first year, second year or third year of their degree, must include a certified copy of ALL university results-from first year to the current year of study,and a certified copy of their final Grade 12 results.
  • Students who are awarded a bursary will have to provide proof of registration with a South African university before any funds will be paid to the university, for the student.
  • After a bursary is awarded, a change in course of study or institution where the studies are to be undertaken requires approval from the SKA SA. (SKA SA reserves the right not to approve such changes).
  • After a bursary is awarded, continued funding is dependent on satisfactory academic performance (maintaining a minimum 60% average in June and December).
  • All successful students will be required to submit their university academic transcripts in June and December of each year, for evaluation by the SKA SA.
  • Students who do obtain a minimum of 60% will not receive further funding from SKA SA.
  • Students who do not obtain the degree for which the bursary was awarded, relinquish their studies, or leave the tertiary institution during the period for which the bursary was awarded, will have to refund all payments of the bursary already received.
  • On completion of the studies supported by means of the bursary, students are required to submit a copy of their degree to the SKA SA.

Payment of an SA SKA undergraduate or honours bursary

  • Funds will be paid to the university, where the student is registered, in two installments.
  • The first instalment will be paid at the start of the academic year (February) and the second instalment will be paid in July / August, subject to satisfactory academic performance.
  • The amount remaining after tuition (and residence fees if relevant) has been paid to the university, must be used by the student to pay f or living costs (rent, food, travel etc.) and for books and stationery.

No additional funding will be provided for any reason. Any other non-SKA SA funding received by a student must be declared to the SKA SA in writing.

  • Only one application form per student must be completed and submitted.
  • In completing an application form for a bursary from the SKA SA, you accept the conditions listed above.
  • No late or incomplete applications will be accepted.
  • Successful students will be notified by 6 December 2013.
  • The SKA SA reserves the right not to accept any application in part or in whole.
  • The decision of the SKA SA will be final and no correspondence will be entered into after the decision.

As part of the “In-Country Scholarship Programme”, in which more than two dozen African universities and university networks participate and which annually supports some 800 African postgraduates, DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) in partnership with the National Research Foundation (NRF) is able to offer scholarships for postgraduate studies at South African universities.

The programme is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the National Research Foundation (NRF). The scholarship is aimed at future academic staff development without neglecting other sector demands for academically trained personnel.

Target Group
The programme targets candidates who are working towards a master’s or doctoral degree. Preference will be given to full-time registered young South Africans or permanent resident university staff members considered for teaching / research staff recruitment either for their own university or any other institution of higher education in South Africa.

Staff members should be enrolled for full-time studies and be exempted from teaching. In exceptional cases, a limited extent of teaching obligations may be accepted but has to be motivated in writing. The host institution has to document precisely and convincingly the quantity and content of the lecturing duties and their compliance with the prevailing goal of the academic qualification of the candidate.

An intrinsic link between the teaching obligations and the content of the degree programme is indispensable. DAAD and NRF offer up to 100 scholarships (new awards) for Master’s and Doctoral studies in 2014.

Scholarship Details

The scholarships are designed for full-time two-year Master’s courses or three-year doctoral degree studies.

Please Note: The initial award is for one year only. For extensions of the award an annual progress report will have to be completed by the applicant with input from the supervisor of the proposed research and submitted to the NRF via the university financial aid/ postgraduate/ research office.

Scholarship values are as follows:
Master’s degree : ZAR 60,000.00 p.a.
PhD degree : ZAR 90,000.00 p.a.

Students upgrading from a Master’s degree to a PhD are expected to complete an annual progress report, stating clearly that they have upgraded their studies. Upgrades will be included in the DAAD/NRF Joint In-Country Scholarship Programme. Scholarship holders are not allowed to change to any other DAAD or NRF funding streams during the tenure of the award.

However scholarship holders are encouraged to apply to other funding streams/ programmes on completion of their funding (e.g. completion of Master’s degree and wanting to apply for doctoral funding).

Eligibility Criteria

Please carefully read through the eligibility criteria before applying.

• Applicants must be South African citizens or hold permanent residence status in South Africa (in the latter case, both certified proof of university employment and residency must be provided).

• Applicants must have obtained an accumulative grade average of 65% and above to be considered.

• Female candidates and those belonging to historically disadvantaged groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

• An age limit of 36 years at the time of application applies.

• Applicants may come from all fields of study that have a strong relevance to the national development of the country. Fields include: the natural sciences, mathematics, ICT, engineering, agricultural sciences, and applied social sciences. Humanities and fine arts are excluded from this programme. However, Humanities applications may be considered if the research has a social focus.

• Applicants who already hold a qualification for the level of funding they are applying for are not eligible.

• Scholarships-holders are allowed to hold supplementary bursaries, grants or emoluments which may be capped in line with NRF and university policies.

• The scholarship must not be held simultaneously with a bursary/scholarship from any other NRF source, NRF administered source or other government sources without prior NRF/ DAAD permission.

• If the applicant does receive supplementary funding during the duration of the scholarship, this has to be declared to the NRF/ DAAD.

• Scholarship-holders must not hold full-time salaried employment during the duration of the scholarship. They will be allowed to undertake a maximum of 12 hours of employment which includes teaching, tutorials, and assistance or demonstration duties per week on average.

• University staff members applying to the programme will have to provide a supporting letter from their human resource department clearly indicating their working hours and status of employment during the tenure of the award.

It is the responsibility of the student to find a suitable supervisor and ensure that the supervisor sends a referee report to the NRF as part of the application.

Application Documents

• Proof of South African Identity Document (ID) or proof of Permanent
Residency together with letter indicating university employment (if applicable, only at PhD levels).

• Official and certified university degree certificates and transcripts indicating a minimum accumulative academic requirement of 65% in previous degree.
• Recommendation by Supervisor (compulsory for doctoral applicants).
• Admission letter indicating full-time registration (if available). This will be required if successful.

• Reference Letters (if available).

Applicants can apply for the DAAD/NRF Joint In-Country Scholarship Programme by accessing the link: https://nrfsubmission.nrf.ac.za/

• Register/ Login using your ID number and password.

• Select create new application from the list of existing calls.

• Select the call for which you are applying to: DAAD-NRF In-Country Scholarships Programme 2014.

• Remember to complete all sections of the application.

• Please attach the necessary documents in one PDF file in the following order: ID document, proof of permanent residence and university employment letter (if applicable), certified university degree certificates and transcripts, recommendation by supervisor( compulsory for doctoral applicants)
letter of admission (if available) and any reference letters (if available).

• Should you not follow the guidelines for attaching the necessary documents your application will not be considered.

• Remember to submit your application upon completion.

• Complete applications will go to the host university for verification before being forwarded to the NRF for further processing.

• Incomplete applications will not be considered.

No late submissions of applications will be considered.

• Applications that do not meet the eligibility criteria will not be considered (please refer to funding manual and call document for details on eligibility of the DAAD-NRF In-Country Scholarship programmes).

The Lonmin Bursary Scheme has been established to assist potential students to attain qualifications in mining-related disciplines, thereby contributing to the general upliftment of skills and qualification levels in the mining sector. The fully paid Bursaries are offered to top performing students who wish to further their studies at accredited formal tertiary institutions.

Lonmin Bursary Rules and Conditions:

Bursaries may be awarded to suitable candidates who meet the criteria in terms of:

  • Completing the specific application form and submitting it with all required documentation
  • C average (60% or higher);
  • Grade 12 applicants should meet the entry requirements of the tertiary institutions.
  • In the allocation of Bursaries, preference will be given to HDSA candidates, Females and candidates from the Greater Lonmin Community.
  • Proven South African citizenship or permanent residence of the applicant.
  • The application being for a first tertiary qualification (post graduate applications and applications for specialization shall be considered and approved as exceptions, based on merit). Honours studies will be approved if the honours year forms part of the initial qualification i.e. Geology.
  • The bursary is renewable annually, depending on academic performance.
  • After qualifying, the bursar will be required to work for Lonmin for a period equal to the study period funded.

Rules of the Lonmin Bursary Scheme:

  1.  Poor academic performance (fail two or more subjects in any one semester or academic year or one major subject that lead to the extension of the programme) will lead to the suspension of the Lonmin Bursary.
  2.  Should the Bursar’s poor academic performance continue the Bursary contract will be terminated.

The South African Reserve Bank (the Bank), as part of addressing the severe shortage of skills in South Africa, provides bursaries to students in relevant fields of study who are from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The purpose of the bursary scheme is to assist financially needy students who obtain good results in Matric/Grade 12 and who want to study in fields relevant to the Bank. The bursary is intended for undergraduate studies at a South African university on a full-time basis.
Studies for which bursaries will be granted       
The studies that students intend to pursue shall have a bearing on, and be applicable to, the functions and activities of the Bank. (For more information on the Bank, visit the Bank’s website:www.reservebank.co.za). This includes, for example, Economics, Information Technology, Finance, Law and Accounting, and excludes, for example, Medicine, Dentistry and Social Work.
A bursary will be granted from the first academic year and reviewed annually
Bursary holders need not reapply for the bursary each year.
Criteria for awarding bursaries
 
Over and above the criteria set out in paragraphs 1 to 3 above, the following will be used as guidelines in the awarding of bursaries:
·   Bursaries will be awarded to students who obtain 60 per cent in the June Matric/Grade 12 examinations. Final awarding of a Bank bursary is subject to a student’s final Matric/Grade 12 results and enrolment acceptance at a South African university.
·    Bursaries will be awarded to South African citizens only.
·     The total number of students and related bursary costs will be reviewed annually.
·     An annual one-off payment for books, accommodation (university accommodation only) and tuition fees will be made to a student.
4.          Post-bursary obligations
The Bank will have first right of refusal with regard to funded students, that is, bursary holders will be obliged to work for the Bank for a period equal to their bursary period, unless the Bank chooses not to employ them.
Students who choose not to work for the Bank despite the Bank offering them a position after completing their studies will be required to pay the full cost of the bursary back to the Bank.
The Bank will provide students who are Bank bursary holders vacation work opportunities that are funded by the Bank.

Submission of examination results by bursary holders

Bursary holders will be required to submit their examination results before 31 December of each year, regardless of whether or not they will be awarded a bursary for the following year.
