2014/2015 Canon Collins Trust Scholarship for Masters Study in the UK.

Canon Collins Trust invites applications for scholarships for postgraduate study in the United Kingdom commencing in September 2014. Scholarships are available for full-timetaught Masters programmes in all subject areas at the following universities:
  • School of Oriental and African Studies
  • University of Sussex
  • University of Oxford & St Antony’s College
  • University of Sheffield
  • Queen Mary, University of London

Eligibility

Are you eligible?

To apply for a scholarship under this programme you must:

  • Be a national of, or have refugee status, in one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
  • Be normally resident in southern Africa
  • Be in possession of a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application
  • Be applying for a full-time one-year taught masters course at one of the above named universities.
  • Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field

 Scholarship Worth

  •  Full tuition fees, a monthly stipend,
  • A return economy flight,
  • A settling-in allowance and other support whilst in the UK.

Applicants must meet with the following criteria:

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science on Achievement Level 6 (70%). English at least on Achievement Level 4 (50%)
  • Undergraduates who are currently studying full time, without a bursary, at a recognised South African University in the fields listed below, may also apply.

Bursaries are for B Degrees only in the following fields of engineering:

  • Mechanical
  • Instrumentation
  • Electrical
  • Mining
  • Chemical
  • Geology

Postgraduate Bursary Scheme is offered by the Sasol in South Africa. Sasol Postgraduate Bursaries are awarded for full-time university study in the field of science and engineering at Masters or PhD degree level.

Sasol Postgraduate Bursaries are awarded for full-time University study in Science and Engineering, at Masters or Ph.D Degree level. (Students interested in a Honours Degree or 4th year studies should apply on the Undergraduate webpage).

Please note that Commerce postgraduate bursaries are not supported at this stage.

Should you wish to apply for a postgraduate bursary, please read through the recommended research fields contained in the link below prior to submitting an application.

Fields of study

The Sasol Bursary Scheme offers bursaries on the basis of a service binding contract after graduation for a period equal to the tenure of the bursary. Applications may be submitted for one of the following fields of study:

Note:No bursaries are awarded for fields of study not listed above. Bursaries are not always awarded in each field of study every year. Applicants should submit an application based on a real interest in the field and not only because they may secure a bursary.

It is advisable to read through the entire document as many research fields are multidisciplinary and may be attractive to either Science or Engineering students. Students and their prospective supervisors are encouraged to contact the Sasol personnel listed in the document to discuss their interests and to gain further insights into the type of research, future direction and opportunities within such technologies.

Students should formulate a research project proposal and include a summary of their proposed project on their application. Projects which incorporate a multidisciplinary approach are encouraged. Study at all South African institutions will be considered, taking into account the expertise base of a given department in that area of research.

Incomplete applications, late applications, email applications and applications submitted by any manner other than the official Sasol website will not be considered. Applicants should be residents of South Africa.

2013 FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar Scholarship for South Africans.

The laurie dippenaar scholarship for international postgraduate study to the value of R350 000 per annum for a maximum of two years is available to a south african citizen for study outside south africa in any discipline at the internationally recognised university of his/her choice for a postgraduate degree – excellence is the only criteria for selection.
Applications open Friday 4 January 2013 and close Friday 1 March 2013
What makes this scholarship different from most is not only the personal interest which Laurie Dippenaar, chairman of FirstRand, takes in the selection process, but also his interest in the ongoing progress of the recipient.
Shortlisted candidates will be notified by the end of April 2012 and should be available for the final interviews, to be held in Sandton, during April 2013. A final announcement will be made before the end of May 2013.
Scholarship criteria are set out below. The successful candidate is required to return to South Africa for at least five years after completing his or her studies as stipulated by SARS.

Scholarship process

The following factors are taken into account in the awarding of the scholarship:

• academic excellence; 
• leadership qualities; 
• community involvement; and 
• ability to be a destiny change.

Preference is given to applicants under the age of 35 and this has to be for first-time overseas study. Applicants should have applied to and been conditionally accepted by their university of choice for the postgraduate course they wish to pursue by April 2013.

Applications will be treated in the strictest confidence.

The adjudicators will not consider support beyond a two-year period. Any extension beyond the first year will be subject to satisfactory progress reports from the candidate and institution concerned at the end of the first year of study.

The decision of the adjudication panel is final and correspondence regarding their decision will not be entered into. The panel reserves the right not to make an award.

The Harvard South Africa Fellowship Program (HSAFP) is intended for South Africans who in the past were educationally disadvantaged by law and resource allocation under apartheid. In 1979 Harvard University began awarding these fellowships for a year of study in one or more of its faculties or schools. Harvard funds these fellowships from its own resources. Over the years more than one hundred and forty fellowships have been awarded to South Africans.
