Sasol New Signatures Art Competition

Applications are now open for the 2024 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition. The slogan for the Sasol New Signatures 2024 campaign is Articulate. The concept celebrates the universal human desire for self-expression and connection and showcases how art can transcend barriers of language, culture, time, and background, allowing emerging artists to express their ideas and connect with others in infinite ways.

Requirements

The competition welcomes entries from all South African artists of 18 years and older who have not yet had a solo exhibition.
Artists who have had a solo exhibition for academic purposes (such as a Master’s degree exhibition) are also eligible to enter.
Entries are accepted in various artistic mediums including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, video art, and installations.
Artists are invited to submit artworks crafted in unique styles and unconventional techniques that defy traditional boundaries and expectations.

Prizes

The winner will receive R100 000 and the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition at next year’s exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum.
The runner-up will receive R25 000, and the five merit award winners will each walk away with R10 000.

Selection Criteria

The winners of the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition will be announced on Wednesday, 4 September 2024.

Sasol New Signatures Art Competition calls for artists to go ‘beyond’

Sasol is now open for entries into the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition – one of South Africa’s oldest and most respected art competitions.

The competition is now in its 31st year of existence and this year we encourage entrants to submit works that are imaginative, transgressive, transcendent, disruptive, boundless and ‘beyond’.

Requirements

If you are a South African artist who is 18 years or older, and you have not yet held a solo exhibition, the Sasol New Signatures competition is ideal for you.

If you have held a solo exhibition for academic purposes, for example, a Master’s degree exhibition, you are also allowed to enter.

What mediums are accepted?

Artists are able to submit artworks in all artistic mediums including photography, performance art, video and installations.

Benefits:

Not only do emerging artists benefit immensely from the profile of being named a winner, the competition is also “an enabler for emerging artists to not only unsettle societal conventions, but to also expand the possibilities of art” says Sidogi.
The overall competition winner receives R100 000 and an opportunity of a solo exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum (terms and conditions apply) with the runner-up receiving R25 000 and five merit awards winners receiving R10 000 each.

How do I enter?

Artists can enter by downloading entry forms here.

Entries must be submitted to one of the collection points across the country on Wednesday, 24 June 2020 and Thursday, 25 June 2020. No entries will be received before or after these dates, or outside the hours of 10h00 and 16h00.

When will the winners be announced?

The winners of this year’s competition will be announced on 26 August, and the Sasol New Signatures exhibition will run from 27 August to 04 October 2020.
