Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2017 for Young Writers from Commonwealth Nations (Fully Funded to London)

The Royal Commonwealth Society is pleased to announce that the theme for The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2017 is A Commonwealth for Peace.

Building upon the 2016 theme of An Inclusive Commonwealth, this year’s topics ask for a more active understanding of the role of the Commonwealth as a network of and for democracy, Human Rights and peace. We are asking young writers to explore peace at every level, from the personal to the political to the pan-Commonwealth.

  1. What is in your Toolbox for Peace?
  2. My peaceful place.
  3. How can children and young people come together to build a peaceful society?
  4. ‘Peace cannot be learnt from a book or from religion. You have to reach out and touch the nations.’ How does this relate to the Commonwealth?

  2. Should you fight for peace?
  3. Kofi Annan said ‘Education is, quite simply, peace-building by another name.’ Do you agree? Answer with reference to your country and/or the Commonwealth.
  4. What is the cost of peace?

Requirements:

  • All citizens and residents of the Commonwealth aged 18 and under are eligible to enter the competition. Special dispensation applies to entrants from Hong Kong, Ireland, The Gambia and Zimbabwe, who are also eligible.
  • All entries must be in English.
  • Entrants are asked to present their work in the format that best conveys their message, be that an essay, poem, story, folk tale, script, reportage, monologue or other written style.
  • Photos and drawings are encouraged, particularly in the Junior Category.

AWARDS

  • One Winner and Runner-up will be chosen from each category.
  • Winners and Runners-up will be flown to London for a week of educational and cultural events, culminating in a special Awards Ceremony.
  • A number of Gold, Silver and Bronze
  • Awards will be given in both the Senior and Junior categories, rewarding excellence in writing.
  • All entrants will receive a Certificate of Participation.

2016 Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition for Young Writers from Commonwealth Nations

The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2016 is now open for entries; submissions can be made until 1st May 2016.

This year’s theme invites young people to think about whether or not it is possible to be living responsibly and tolerantly in an increasingly interconnected Commonwealth.
Through the world’s oldest schools’ international writing competition, the Royal Commonwealth Society provides an opportunity for young people to share their stories and have their voices heard.

The overarching theme for 2016 is ‘An Inclusive Commonwealth’, which is also the 2016 Commonwealth Year theme, and a topical theme for today’s youth. Both Senior and Junior topics give young people the opportunity to think about aspects of the theme such as: the significance of community; the importance of diversity and difference; the question of belonging; the values of tolerance, respect and understanding; and the sense of shared responsibility that exists within the Commonwealth today.

The topics are a chance to develop critical thinking and to express views in a creative manner.

JUNIOR CATEGORY
Born after 1st May 2002 (under 14 years)
1 Imagine inviting a stranger to your country. How would you welcome them?
2 My ideal community.
3 Are we really so different?
4 Tales of an ‘insider/outsider’.
SENIOR CATEGORY
Born between 2nd May 1997 and 1st May 2002 (14-18 years)
1 Let them in.
2 How can you balance the needs of the individual with the needs of the crowd?
3 The wealth we have in common.
4 Is it possible to have an inclusive and tolerant society?

 

Submission Requirements:

  • The Competition is open to nationals or residents of all Commonwealth countries and territories.
  • Entrants must select a Senior or Junior topic depending on their age on 1st May 2016.
  • Only one essay per entrant is allowed.
  • Entries must be written in English.
  • The maximum word counts are 1500 words for Senior entries and 750 words for Junior entries. These word limits apply to all topics and all formats (essay, poem, letter, etc). Exceeding the word count will result in automatic disqualification.
  • Plagiarism: Every year a number of students are disqualified because they are suspected of plagiarism.
  • The final copy submitted for the competition MUST be the entrant’s own work, and cannot be unduly corrected or improved by another person.
  • Essays can only be uploaded in either word doc. or pdf format.

Prize:

  • Prizes have traditionally been awarded only to the first prize winners in the Senior and Junior categories and also vary year by year. This means RCS is not able to confirm what the prizes will be until after the winners are announced in September 2016.
  • Past prizes have included certificates, resources for winner’s school, visits to Cambridge University, a trip to London and a week of activities, work experience at international organisations, and having your entry featured in worldwide media.

Are you a writer? Are you interested in the world around you? Do you want your voice to be heard by others? If so, the Commonwealth Essay Competition is definitely for you.

Run by the Royal Commonwealth Society since 1883, the Commonwealth Essay Competition is the world’s oldest and largest schools’ international writing competition. It provides a platform for young people to compete with their peers in a truly global environment.

The theme for the 2014 Commonwealth Essay Competition is ‘Team Commonwealth‘. As athletes gather in Glasgow for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, team spirit will be on display both within and between nations. Young writers are encouraged to explore this theme in fun, academic, witty, and most of all creative ways!

Eligibility

  • Open to all Commonwealth citizens aged 18 and under, the Essay Competition offers young people the opportunity to make their voice heard on a global platform and engage with issues important to them.

Entrants are judged in two age groups, Junior (under 14 years) and Senior (14–18 years)  and must be living in, or be a national of, a Commonwealth country/territory

 

Junior Category – Born after 1st May 2000

1. Tell us about your family or friends. Who are  the team players and who are the stars?
2. ‘You’re one of us now.’
3. What makes a good team? What makes a good  team player?
4. Tell us about an instance (or two) where people  from different generations have worked together.
5. Have there been times in your life when you  wished you had someone to team up with?

Senior Category:Born between 2nd May 1995  and 1st May 2000

Topic Numbers

1. Team Commonwealth! How would you describe  what your country has to offer other members of
the team?
2. How can sport build peace in troubled  communities?
3. What part does competition play in people’s  daily lives?
4. Explore the relationship between ethics, sport and human rights.
5. ‘We’re a good partnership, you and I!’

Junior and Senior : A bonus topic open to  all entrants

1. ‘United we stand!’

The 2014 Commonwealth Essay Competition, run in partnership with Cambridge University Press, closes for entries on Thursday 1st May.

Entrants are encouraged to be creative in their response. Answers can be submitted in a number
of formats, for example: poem, letter, folk tale, script or essay – the choice is yours!

The 33Fifty Commonwealth Youth Leadership programme

33Fifty is a leadership programme for young Commonwealth leaders aged between 18 and 25. The
name comes from the fact that 33% of the world’s population lives in the Commonwealth, and 50% of those are under 25.

33Fifty aims to develop young leaders to bring people together, reconcile differences, lead change and use the Commonwealth’s networks effectively.

33Fifty builds on Nkabom, the youth leadership programme pioneered by the Royal Commonwealth Society. It will form part of the official cultural programme running parallel to the Commonwealth Games and will be delivered by Common Purpose and the Royal Commonwealth Society.

Each programme will bring together 100 young leaders of which:

  • 1/3 will be nationals of the host country
  • 1/3 will be from across the Commonwealth currently studying or living in the host country
  • 1/3 will travel to Scotland from across the Commonwealth.

When and Where:

33Fifty will run immediately prior to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, as part of the official cultural programme.

GLASGOW: JULY 17 AND 18
EDINBURGH: JULY 19 AND 20

The participants will explore Glasgow and Edinburgh, meeting local leaders from public, private and not-for-profit organisations as well as leaders from the wider Commonwealth gathered for Glasgow 2014.

Accomodation will be provided by the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh during the programme.

During the programme food and transport will also be provided.

Please note that participants must make their own arrangements for transport to Scotland.

2013 commonwealth Essay Competition

Are you a writer? Are you interested in the world around you? Do you want your voice to be heard by others? If so, the Commonwealth Essay Competition is definitely
for you. We encourage you to be creative in your response to our topics. You can submit a poem, letter, article, story, essay or even a short play. The choice is yours. Just get writing!

Run by the Royal Commonwealth Society since 1883, the Commonwealth Essay Competition is the world’s oldest and largest schools’ international writing competition. It provides a platform for young people to compete with their peers in a truly global environment.

Past winners include Mr Lee Hsien Loong, the Prime Minister of Singapore and Elspeth Huxley.The competition is free to enter and in 2012 over 1,000 young writers, from 245 schools, in 38 countries across the Commonwealth received an award for their entry.

From Africa to Asia, from the Pacific to the Caribbean, from Europe to North America, the Commonwealth’s 2.1 billion people make up a quarter of the world’s population. Moreover, half of the population of the Commonwealth is aged 25 or under. The Essay Competition celebrates and nurtures the creative talents of the young people that make up this unique association.
