The African Centre for Cities (ACC) was established in 2007 at the University of Cape Town as an urban research institute. The ACC is based in the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, but is interdisciplinary in its scope, drawing expertise on urban issues from across the university. The mission of the ACC is to “facilitate critical urban research and policy discourses for the promotion of vibrant, democratic and sustainable urban development in the global South”.The ACC is a partner in the Pan African Research College on Sustainable Cities, launched in 2018. Funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the college will see researchers in diverse fields share knowledge to better understand the complexities of urban Africa. The College is made up of senior researchers from five partner universities, namely the University of Ghana, University of Nairobi, the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources (Accra, Ghana), the University of the Witwatersrand, and the University of Cape Town.PhD researcher in urban sprawl and land use dynamics in Cape Town
The ACC is seeking to recruit a full-time PhD candidate who will be one of a cohort of 8 PhD candidates and 5 Post-Doctoral fellows based at the 5 partner universities that constitute the Pan African Research College on Sustainable Cities.

One of the ‘wicked problems’ facing Cape Town and other African cities are their inequitable and unsustainable spatial patterns, which are being exacerbated by new formal and informal urban growth. To help better understand this challenge, the successful candidate will be required to do a PhD on a topic related to the issue of urban sprawl and land use dynamics in Cape Town and the implications of this for households and urban governance. It is anticipated that this research will contribute towards current academic debates as well as make a meaningful impact on policy and practice concerning the need for appropriate and innovative ways to manage urban land towards greater socio-spatial transformation in African cities.

Benefits

  • Funding and supervisory support will be provided to the successful candidate over a period of 3 years, depending on satisfactory progress.
  • The bursary amount is R200,000 per year.

Minimum requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Geography, Urban Studies, Anthropology, Sociology or other related discipline
  • Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in MS Office software
  • Good qualitative and quantitative research skills.
  • Evidence of academic writing ability.
  • An awareness of actors, challenges and opportunities related to urban sustainability approaches
  • Interest in interdisciplinarity and broad engagement with diverse sectors to co-produce knowledge
  • Familiarity with the use of social media platforms
  • Planning and organising as well as good time-management skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

Applications for the Africa Science Leadership 2018 Programme are now being accepted.

The ASLP is an initiative of the University of Pretoria in partnership with the Global Young Academy, funded by the Robert Bosch Stiftung. It serves early-­to mid-­career researchers in basic and applied science, engineering, social sciences, arts and the humanities.
The programme aims to grow mid-career African academics in the areas of thought leadership, team development, engagement and collaboration, with the intention of enabling them to solve the complex issues that face both Africa and the global community.
The leadership programme:
• Identifies early-to mid-career academics who have demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in developing key leadership skills
• Supports them to apply the acquired skills to projects that are relevant to the academic development on the continent and its impact on society
• Creates a network of academic leaders on the continent, spanning not only across countries, but also across disciplinary boundaries
• Advances a curriculum for academic leadership development, which can be utilised in institutions in Africa and beyond.
Requirements:
The following criteria are used as a guide for the nomination and selection of fellows:
•A PhD degree or equivalent qualification;
•A faculty or a continuing research position at a research institution;
• Active in research and teaching at an African institution of higher education or research;
• A sustained record of outstanding scientific outputs;
  • Interest in translating and communicating the results of their work for impact in society;
• Demonstrated leadership ability in research and beyond;
• Interest in the role of research in addressing complex issues affecting society;
• Interest in collaborations across disciplines and sectors (e.g. industry, government,etc.);
• Commitment to participate in all the activities of the fellowship; and
• Intent to share what is learned in the programme with their broader networks
Expected commitment
  • The ASLP is seeking candidates who are committed to developing leadership in Africa.
  • The training itself requires the time commitment of the two multi-­day training sessions.
  • Furthermore, fellows will be expected to develop their leadership project and engage with other fellows for peer support.
  • There will be some costs, which are not covered by the programme, such as visas, vaccinations or local transport expenses, for which you may need to seek support from your local institution or fund personally. You will also be required to provide us with your personal travel insurance details as a condition of participation.
Programme Structure
  • The programme will use a highly interactive approach to training, application of skills to a leadership project, peer support, and mentorship.
  • Fellows will attend an initial 5 day,intensive on-­site programme in Pretoria, South Africa from 16-­21 March 2018 (departing on the 22nd). The process will involve an approach that cycles between theory, application and reflection. Participants will be challenged to work collaboratively to design initiatives that advance a new paradigm for African science.
The training will cover:
• Core elements of collective leadership
• Creative and systems thinking
• Development of effective networks
• Stakeholder engagement for change
• Maximising the efficiency and impact of collaborative efforts
• Advanced dialogue and communication skills
• Effective problem solving and decision making

 

Application Procedure:

  • All applicants have to provide two support letters by academic referees (details are provided in the application form). One of the two referees has to commit to be involved in future communications and mentorship in case of selection of the applicant into the programme.
  • This referee will be informed about the progress of the fellow and should be willing to support the fellow if he or she requires it.
  • All applications will be reviewed and shortlisted by representatives of the University of Pretoria, the Global Young Academy, national young academies, and ASLP Management.
  • The ASLP Management team will make the final selection of candidates.

The Tuks Young Research Leader Programme (TYRLP) is an initiative of the University of Pretoria in partnership with the Africa Science Leadership Programme (ASLP), KnowInnovation and the Robert Bosch Stiftung. It serves early career researchers in basic and applied sciences, engineering, social sciences, arts and the humanities.

The programme aims to grow early career academics at UP in the areas of thought leadership, team development, engagement and collaboration, with the intention of enabling them to solve the complex issues that face society.

A further aim is to form a community within the University of the like‐minded young researchers who possess qualities that will contribute to UP becoming a leading research intensive University, in line with the projected UP 2025 vision.

The leadership programme:

  • Identifies early career academics who have demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in developing key leadership skills;
  • Supports them to apply the acquired skills to projects that are relevant to the development of their academic careers and its impact;
  • Creates a network of early career academic leaders at UP, spanning across disciplinary boundaries;
  • Advances a curriculum for academic leadership development, which can be utilised by others.

Programme structure

The programme follows a highly interactive approach to training, including application of skills to a leadership project, peer support, and mentorship. Fellows will attend a two day intensive on‐site programme at UP. The process involves an approach that cycles between theory, application and reflection. The TYRLP is seeking candidates who are committed to developing science leadership at UP. The training itself requires the time commitment of a two day training session. Furthermore, fellows will be expected to develop their leadership skills and engage with other fellows and the ASLP team for peer support following the training.

Selection criteria and application process

To be selected, applicants need to display a compelling vision of their future involvement in the development of research projects, programmes, human capacity, specific policies or societal structures. The selection process will consider individual qualities but also focus on ensuring a diversity of culture, subject background (natural and social sciences, humanities) and gender among the fellows.

The following criteria are used as a guide for the nomination and selection of fellows:

  • A research fellowship with two years’ experience or a faculty position at UP
  • Outstanding scientific potential and outputs
  • A desire to nurture a culture of research excellence
  • Internationally influential, but South Africa and Africa focused
  • A desire to work collaboratively on inter‐ and transdisciplinary problems
  • An appetite for multiple stakeholder engagement and research communication
  • Commitment to participate in all the activities of the fellowship

Ashoka Changemaker Summit 2017 for Young Changemakers from East Africa (Fully Funded to Kenya)

This special edition of ChangemakerXchange Summit in Kenya brings together 25 of the top young changemakers and adult allies from East Africa, individuals that are driven to make a positive change, from across all sectors (civil society, media, corporate, government and more). The aim of the summit is to build a cross-sectoral network of changemakers that work together to address the societal issues they see being most present in a collaborative manner.

The Ashoka Changemaker exchange co-created with and supported by Robert Bosch Stiftung, is a global collaboration platform for young social innovators. The Kenya summit from April 1st to April 5 2017 brings together 25 of the top young changemakers, intrapreneurs and adult allies from East Africa, individuals that are driven to make a positive change, from across all sectors, including social entrepreneurs, civil society, education, national and local government, media and the corporate world. Participants will be given the chance to create cross-sector / cross-border collaborations.

The summit is open to applicants, aged between 18 and 35 from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, DRC, Somalia, Southern Sudan or Rwanda, who lead their own social venture or initiative or do work within an institution (e.g. the media, a company etc.) that addresses a relevant social problem.

Selection Criteria:

Applicants for ChangemakerXchange:

  • must be between 18-35 years old
  • should lead, co-lead, have initiated, founded or co-founded their own social venture or initiative which is up and running and addresses a relevant social problem within an instution or outside (both changemakers that run initiatives by themselves as well as those that run it within an organization, company, government, the media or elsewhere are invited to apply).
  • need to make a positive difference either via their own social venture or within their sector (corporate, media, government etc.)
  • Speak English well enough to fully participate in the summit
  • should have the skills and know-how to be part of a special community of collaborative social entrepreneurs and be willing to play an active role in this community.
  • come from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, DRC, Somalia, Southern Sudan or Rwanda

DGAP’s EU-Middle East Forum (EUMEF) 2016 for Young Professionals from the MENA Region – Rabat, Morocco (Funded)

DGAP’s EU-Middle East Forum (EUMEF), in cooperation with the German Federal Foreign Office, the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa), the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, and the Rabat Social Studies Institute (RSSI), is welcoming applications for its upcoming capacity building workshop on

“Socio-Economic Challenges and Opportunities: What Does the Future Hold for Morocco and Tunisia?” (Scenario Planning and Strategic Policy Analysis).

EUMEF invites twenty young and mid-level experts and professionals from the MENA region and Europe, working in think tanks, research institutes, politics or civil society organizations, and whose work focuses on socio-economic developments in Morocco or Tunisia.

During the workshop, the participants will receive an introduction to scenario planning and strategic policy analysis. In two working groups, they will then develop their own scenarios for possible socio-economic developments in Morocco and Tunisia. Presentations by renowned experts will complement the scenario planning sessions. The workshop will be held in English.

Target Group:

  • The main protagonists and target group of the workshop are young and mid-level professionals (aged around 27-40) with at least two years of professional work experience in policy analysis or policy making in think tanks, academic research institutions, politics or civil society, with a focus on Morocco or Tunisia.
  • Participants should come from or currently reside in Morocco, Tunisia, other countries of the MENA region, or the EU.

MENA Countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, West Bank and Gaza, and Yemen.

Le Next Einstein Forum (NEF), une initiative de l’AIMS en partenariat avec la fondation Robert Bosch Stiftung, est un nouveau forum mondial pour la science en Afrique qui propulsera l’Afrique sur la scène scientifique mondiale.

Le NEF rassemblera plus de 500 scientifiques de renom et intervenants distingués du monde entier en Afrique. La rencontre internationale du NEF, une rencontre biennale, honorera les plus brillants jeunes scientifiqu es qui auront l’opportunité d’être en contact avec des leaders africains et du reste du monde dans le cadre de rencontres où la participation sera possible uniquement sur invitation officielle.

Ces scientifiques de renom, décideurs politiques, hommes d’affaires, journalistes, membres

Critères d’admissibilité

• Être âgée de moins de 42 ans ou moins au 31 décembre 2015 (Née après le 1 janvier 1973)
• Être titulaire d’un passeport délivré par un pays africain
• Être une scientifique ou une spécialiste de la technologie, titulaire d’un  Doctorat dans le
s domaines de la science, de la technologie, de l’ingénierie,  des mathématiques ou des sciences sociales
• Avoir effectué une recherche de référence et/ou découverte qui a eu un impact  à l’échelle mondiale
• Être motivée par le souci de promouvoir la visibilité du continent africain par  des travaux dans le domaine des sciences, des technologies et/ou des sciences sociales

The Next Einstein Forum (NEF), an AIMS initiative in partnership with the Robert
Bosch Stiftung, is a new global forum for science in Africa that will propel Africa onto the global scientific stage.

The NEF will unite more than 500 outstanding thinkers and distinguished stakeholders from
around the world together in Africa. NEF Global Gatherings, held every second year, will showcase Africa’s top young scientists and connect them with leaders from Africa and the
rest of the world in high-profile, invitation-only forums.

These leading scientists, policy-makers,business people, journalists, civil-society representatives and entrepreneurs will highlight breakthrough discoveries and catalyze
scientific collaboration for human development.

To be held in Dakar,Senegal from the 8th to the 10th of March 2016, the NEF will touch on the three pillars of science, society and policy.

The NEF Fellows programme will showcase 15 of Africa’s best young scientists on the global stage. The NEF Fellows programme will provide these brilliant young women with the opportunity to present their research and draw upon the vast networks of NEF members and participants for support, connections and advice to advance their work.

Applications to the NEF Fellows programme are open to Africans from around
the world-including those who currently reside in the Diaspora-in all fields of science, including the social sciences and technology fields.

This unique and diverse group will represent a wide range of research interests, experiences and perspectives, but will have in common extraordinary achievements and

Eligibility Requirements:

• 42 years of age or less as of 31.12.2015 (Born  after 1 January 1973)
• Hold a passport from an African country
• Be a woman scientist or technology specialist, who holds a PhD in Science, Technology,
Engineering, Mathematicsor social science fields
• Demonstrated track record of research/findings that have impact globally
• Passionate about raising Africa’s profile in science and/or social science
• Able to clearly present their work to an audience in English or French

Criteria for Selection

• (30%): Outstanding  academic qualifications, as measured by the standards of the p articular academic discipline.

  • Publication record
  • Prizes and other awards, such as especially distinguished fellowships or memberships in
    prestigious academic circles (for example,in high-ranking committees, bodies, academies, etc.)
  • Independently raised funding from outside sources in a competitive process
  • Number of patents
  • The type and number of invited talks at international conferences

2015 Ashoka ChangemakerXchange – Training for Young Social Entrepreneurs, Istanbul, Turkey.( Fully Funded)

Originally created in Istanbul by Ashoka and supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the ChangemakerXchange is a global collaboration platform for young social entrepreneurs. It gathers some of the world’s most exciting changemakers at summits around the world for the exchange and co-creation of ideas. The ChangemakerXchange now brings together young social entrepreneurs from 25 different countries in Europe, Turkey and North Africa.

Objectives

  • Identify and connect young innovators at summits around the world to build a community of like minded individuals (human connection)
  • create spaces and opportunities for the exchange of ideas/resources/ challenges/best case practices/tools and experiences.(peer to peer learning)
  • facilitate the co-creation of new ideas and cross border collaborations. (co-creation)

Eligibility:

Selection Criteria:
** You are between 18-28 years old. There are 3 places available for Changemakers up to 30 years old!
** You lead, co-lead, founded or co-founded your own social venture which is up and running and addresses a relevant social problem
** You speak English well enough to understand and make presentations in English and participate in discussions
** You are have the skills, know-how to be part of a special community of collaborative young social entrepreneurs and you are willing to play an active role in this community.

Cost

  • ChangemakerXchange is kindly supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and covers 100% of all travel and most of the conference costs for all 5 days (incl. inner city travel, food, entrance fees and more).
  • Participants will only be asked to pay a modest participation fee of $120 to cover part of the costs (A limited number of stipends in special cases are available upon request).
