World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) Learners’ Voice Program 2019/2020 for emerging young leaders (Fully Funded to Doha, Qatar)

The WISE Learners’ Voice Program brings the perspectives of young people to the challenge of rethinking education and equips them to take on leading roles in their fields and in the world of education. The Program is based on the idea that when learners are co-creators of their learning environments, they become active participants invested as stakeholders in the progress of their communities. The Program focuses on building knowledge of education, social entrepreneurship, leadership, and communication skills.

The Learners participate in the global biennial summit and in two intensive residential sessions delivered by expert faculty. These are supplemented by practical workshops and various online and on-site activities. In a key component of the Program, the learners form teams to conceive and design grass-roots projects that address critical education challenges.  Selected projects, developed throughout the year, are presented at the following WISE Summit.

The Learners’ Voice Program was established in 2010 to engage the views and creative energies of young people in addressing pressing global education issues and challenges. The current Learners’ Voice community comprises over 100 Learners from many countries, including Qatar. They represent different backgrounds and disciplines but all share a passion for education. Together they represent a unique perspective within the WISE community.

The WISE Learners’ Voice Program brings the perspectives of young people to the challenge of rethinking education and equips them to take on leading roles in their fields and in the world of education. The revised 2019 Learners’ Voice Program aims to give young people a platform to voice their views and to create a youth community interested in shaping the future of education. At WISE, we believe in empowering young people by ensuring that their views are included at WISE 2019.The threefold objectives of the program to give young people:

1.The tools and resources they need to ensure their voices are heard

2.A platform to voice their opinions and discuss with policy makers, educators and innovators in education

3.An opportunity to participate and engage at WISE 2019 and to have their work creative work published by WISE.

Selection Criteria

1.Candidates must be aged 16-21 who are interested in engaging in the field of education

2.Candidates must have a valid travel document.

3.Candidates must be willing and available to travel to Doha from 16-22 November 2019.

4.Candidates should be proficient in spoken and written English, and should be comfortable presenting and speaking in public.

5.Candidates must be curious minded, flexible and comfortable in multicultural environments.

6.Candidates must demonstrate creativity and reflection in their creative submissions on the selected prompt.

7.The candidate clearly demonstrates engagement in social issues and how s/he has sought to overcome them through innovative ideas, and initiatives.

8.Candidates must secure approval from their schools/institutions to attend the program, and parents if under 18 years of age.

September –Second round of interviews–Residential Session
17-19 November, 2019–Pre-Summit Residential Session
20-21 November 2019 –WISE Summit Participation

Recruitment of the New Cohort

The Learners’ Voice recruitment process includes three steps:

1.Application Form-Candidates must complete the online application form with accurate informationthrough the portal here.

2.Creative Submission-Candidates must also submit a short creative piece in the form of an essay, story, poem, film or any other creative medium in response to one of the eight prompts below:What does it mean to be “educated”?

Teachers VS Technology –Is it the end of the teaching profession, as we know it? Design the school of tomorrow (this can include any aspect of the school, from the physical space to thecurriculum, etc.)
What would you change about your education experience? What does “global citizenship” mean to you?
What values do you think are important to be reflected in your community (and how should they betaught in schools)?
Is a university / college education necessary or even relevant today?
Does your education prepare you for success in life?

Written pieces should be at least 500 words or more.

3.Interview-Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an online interview between June and September and the cohort will be announced in November.

2015 Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival for Film Makers around the World

The Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival will be held Nov. 26 to 29, 2015 in Doha, Qatar.

Aljazeera International Documentary Film Festival was established in 2005, and it is an international event by all standards. Since its first edition, it has become a meeting point for filmmakers and innovators worldwide.

The festival showcases a wide range of documentary films that discuss humanitarian, social, economic, and political issues. This is on top of the support it dedicates to young talents that work hard to have a space for expression and production.

Eligibility:

The competition is open to all TV channels (Arab and non-Arab), production companies, independent filmmakers and cultural, social and media organizations.

Three Competitions

  • The festival holds three competitions: a major one dedicated for TV channels; production firms; cultural, social, and media institutions; and independent producers.
  • It comprises three categories: short films, medium films, and long films.
  • This is in addition to the New Horizon competition that is dedicated to amateur and beginner directors and school pupils.
  • Awards are given to each category, and directors and winners are awarded too. The first edition included participants from Arab countries only.

• Production companies
• Independent filmmakers
• Media, social and cultural organizations

Participation
• Productions taking part in the Festival competitions are limited to documentary films.
• Films produced only within two years prior to the current festival will be accepted.

• A participant may participate in each of the following categories:
1. Short (up to 30 min.)
2. Medium (31 to 59 min.)
3. Long (more than 60 min.)
• Participating films should either be in Arabic or English. If in Arabic, the films should be subtitled into English. Yet, if in another language, they should be translated, dubbed, or subtitled into English. Also, it is preferable to send the film script if available.

• Participants should send 2 DVD (PAL) copies of the documentary operating on a DVD player.

Aljazeera Awards:

• Aljazeera Golden Award

It is offered to each winning film from each of the three categories: Long, Medium, and Short. Each winning film will be granted a cash prize, to be equally shared by the film’s director and producer, as follows:

Long      : QR 50,000 (Fifty thousand Qatari Riyals)
Medium : QR 40,000 (Forty thousand Qatari Riyals)
Short     : QR 30,000 (Thirty thousand Qatari Riyals)

• The Jury Award

It is offered to each winning film from each of the three categories: Long, Medium and short.
Each winning film will be granted a cash prize, to be equally shared by the film director and producer, as follows:

Long     : QR 25,000 (Twenty five thousand Qatari riyals)
Medium: QR 20,000 (Twenty thousand Qatari riyals)
Short    : QR 15,000 (Fifteen thousand Qatari riyals)

None of the awards will be shared between two films in any category. In addition, the Award and Certificate of Recognition will not be applicable to films that have already won awards; this also applies to the Certificate of Excellence.

• Best Director Award
It is offered to

the best director in each of the following categories:

Long     : QR 25,000 (Twenty five thousand Qatari riyals)
Medium: QR 20,000 (Twenty thousand Qatari riyals)
Short    : QR 15,000 (Fifteen thousand Qatari riyals)

• Best Camerawork Award
It is offered to the best camerawork in each of the following categories:

Long     : QR 20,000 (Twenty  thousand Qatari riyals)
Medium: QR 15,000 (Fifteenthousand Qatari riyals)
Short    : QR 10,000 (Ten thousand Qatari riyals)

• New Horizon Award

Two awards will be offered to the best two films directed by students or beginners as follows:

First Award     : QR 15,000 (Fifteen thousand Qatari Riyals)
Second Award: QR 10,000 (Ten thousand Qatari Riyals)

2015 Global Development Conference Essay Competition for Young Students from the MENA region

As part of its 16th Annual Global Development Conference, GDN organizes an essay competition with the support of Economic Research Forum (ERF). This competition is dedicated to young students from the MENA region who are between 21 and 29 years old.
It aims at selecting 20 students who will be invited to attend the Conference from 11 to 13 June in Morocco.
Participants have to write an essay of 2000- 2500 words on the following subject: Rural Development Strategies in the MENA Region. Submissions will be judged for both their analytical rigor and their quality of exposition and written expression. The paper must be innovative and able to put forward positive proposals for one of the following themes:
  • Rural Development and food security,
  • Natural resource management
  • Demographic pressure,
  • Institutions and government policies.
Eligibility
  • Age: students who are between 21 and 29 years old (on 10 June 2015) are eligible to apply.
  • Countries: participants must be registered in a university from one of the countries mentioned in the following list: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey,United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
  • Past grantees and individuals that have been awarded a prize by GDN (including the finalists of the 2014 essay competition invited in Accra) are not eligible to apply.
  • Only individual submissions will be considered.
Essay Submission Format
Theme: Submissions have to deal with the following challenge: «Rural Development Strategies in the MENA Region» picking one of the following themes:
  • Rural development and food security: What kind of agricultural model to ensure food security? Which role for innovation and biotechnologies? What about small farmers? How to raise productivity?
  • Natural resource management: water (irrigation, pricing, scarcity,…), degradation of soil, biodiversity, impact of climate change on the yields and the cultures
  • Demographic pressure: job policies and employment perspectives in rural areas, migrations, rural and urban divide;
  • Institutions and government policies: Which role for local authorities, for farmers‟ cooperatives, water users associations, for local credit institutions? What about the social and cultural capital in rural areas? What kind of market intervention and trad e policies?
  • Word limit : the essay must contain between 2000 and 2500 words, excluding foot notes and reference lists.
  • Personal information about the author should not be mentioned.
  • Structure: the essay must be well structured with a title, an introduction, different parts that are clearly idendified, a conclusion and a reference list. Sources should be cited consistently.
  • Format: the submission must be in word format.
  • Language: the essay should be submitted only in English or French.

  • The selected students will have the opportunity
  • (i) to attend the Conference and interact with seasoned researchers, civil society representative and policy makers,
  • (ii) to interact with each other and make new contacts,
  • (iii) and to attend a specific workshop tailored for them (the day before the Conference) so that they present their ideas to a high level panel.

2015 World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) Prize for Education

The WISE Prize for Education recognizes an individual or a team of up to six people for an outstanding contribution to education. The achievements of the nominated individual or team should have had a significant and lasting impact upon education at any level and should demonstrate an inspiring and visionary approach.

Nominations should demonstrate how nominees have had a significant and lasting impact upon education at any level, and have displayed an inspiring and visionary approach.
The 2014 WISE Prize for Education was presented to Ms Ann Cotton, Founder and President of Camfed. In 1993, Cotton founded the Campaign for Female Education, which sponsors programs designed and implemented by communities to fully suit their unique needs. The organization takes a holistic approach by working in partnership with all the constituencies that influence a girl’s education and life choices to break the cycle of poverty, child marriage, high birth rates, and high rates of HIV/AIDS.

Who Can Nominate?

WISE welcomes nominations by individuals or institutions – including schools, international organizations and private companies – from anywhere in the world.

Selection Process

  • Nominations will be screened by an expert Committee which will make a pre-selection of no more than 15 candidates, whose identities will not be made public.
  • An international Jury of distinguished individuals will then consider these nominees and select the Laureate who will be announced at the 2015 WISE Summit, November 3-5, 2015 in Doha, Qatar.

ITU Telecom World 2014 Young Innovators Competition Challenge 4: Internet of Things(USD 5,000 Prize)

The International Telecommunications Union, the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), in partnership with the IEEE IoT Initiative is looking for the best ideas for new businesses and  innovations that can take advantage of the potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) to be used  for social good and thus improve lives of people all over the world.

ITU Telecom Young Innovators Competition has launched its fourth challenge in the 2014 edition. It calls for young people aged between 18 and 30 from around the world to submit ideas for concepts of start-ups aimed at using the Internet of Things (IoT) for social good in order to significantly improve the lives of people globally. Run in partnership with the IEEE Internet of Things (IoT) Initiative Working Group, the challenge opens the way for two winning concepts for start-ups to attend ITU Telecom World 2014, the leading platform for debate, networking and showcasing for the global ICT community, that will be held in Doha, Qatar, 7 – 10 December 2014.

Challenge-4 seeks ideas on how benefits from the ‘Internet of Things’ can be used for social good and spread to countries around the world, especially to emerging economies where development is currently slower due to the cost of the technology, lack of underlying infrastructure and the need for strong, widespread connectivity. Ideas may focus on methods to expand access to existing technology, such as near-field communication, RFID or QR codes, or might involve applying IoT technology to specific fields, such as agriculture, water management, transportation or other areas of particular relevance to developing communities. Ideas on developing an “Intranet of Things” – local networks of IoT devices functioning on a smaller scale to serve a concrete social purpose – are particularly welcome.

This may involve methods for spreading or expanding access to existing technology such as near  field communication, sensors, RFID or QR codes in emerging or developing countries. It might involve the application of IoT technology to issues and fields of particular interest to emerging or  developing economies, such as agriculture, water management, transportation, or predicting disease outbreaks.

The International Telecommunications Union, the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) is looking for innovative ideas on how ICTs can help smart cities to slow down or mitigate the effects of climate change and thereby improve people’s health.

This might include novel technologies or combinations of existing technologies, services, and systems which would shape a smart city.
