The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a non-profit organization that supports independent global journalism, is seeking applications for investigative data-driven projects on issues related to gender equality and the empowerment of women & girls. This opportunity is open to all newsrooms and independent journalists in the United States and abroad.

The Gender Equality Grant is designed to help journalists take to a new level the reporting on issues related to gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

Requirements

This opportunity is open to U.S. residents and journalists around the world.
Open to proposals from freelance journalists, staff journalists, or groups of newsrooms working in collaboration with a project idea.
The Gender Equality Grant want to make sure that people from many backgrounds and perspectives are empowered to produce journalism.
The Gender Equality Grant strongly encourage proposals from journalists and newsrooms who represent a broad array of social, racial, ethnic, underrepresented groups, and economic backgrounds.

Budget Range

The average size of a Pulitzer Center grant is $5,000, but may be more or less depending on circumstances.

Application Procedure:

To apply, you will be asked to provide the following:

A description of the proposed project in no more than 250 words.
A preliminary budget estimate, including a basic breakdown of costs.
A compelling distribution plan.

Pulitzer Center Persephone Miel Fellowship 2019 for Media Professionals for developing countries (Fully Funded)

The fellowship, overseen by the Pulitzer Center in collaboration with Internews, is designed to help journalists from the developing world do the kind of reporting they’ve always wanted to do and enable them to bring their work to a broader international audience. The fellowship will benefit those with limited access to other fellowships and those whose work is not routinely disseminated internationally. Miel fellowships involve reporting from within the applicant’s native country—or following migrant communities from there to other locations.

Eligibility:

The Persephone Miel fellowships are open to all journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers or filmmakers, staff journalists as well as freelancers and media professionals outside the U.S. who are seeking to report from their home country. Female journalists and journalists from developing countries are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be proficient in English.

Before beginning the project the Persephone Miel Fellow will come to Washington, D.C., to meet with Pulitzer Center staff and journalists and take part in a 2-day workshop on the pending project and strategies for placement and outreach. The Pulitzer Center will provide $2500 to cover travel expenses associated with the Washington workshop.

The Center works with fellowship recipients to distribute their work across multiple platforms in the U.S. to reach the widest possible audience. Projects with multimedia components that combine print, photography and video are strongly encouraged.

Terms of travel grant:

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting will provide a travel grant of $5000 for a reporting project on topics and regions of global importance, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the mainstream media. Specific grant terms are negotiated during the application process based on the scope of proposed work and intended outcomes. Payment of the first half of the grant is disbursed prior to travel, upon receipt of required materials, and the second half on submission of the principal work for publication/broadcast.

Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting Property Rights Grant Opportunity for Nigerian Journalists.

Land grabs, land disputes, hidden land deals, phony C of O’s, flawed and opaque land registries— all pose a threat to the growth and development of Nigeria, one of Africa’s leading economic engines.

The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a grant-giving non-profit organization that supports independent global journalism is seeking applications from Nigerian journalists who want to participate in a collaborative reporting project to investigate land and property rights in their home country. The reporting will be published in Nigerian and international news outlets.

The call for this special grant opportunity is now open. Journalists are encouraged to submit their application on why they should be selected for the reporting project

Eligibility:

This special grant opportunity is open to all Nigerian journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers or filmmakers, staff journalists, as well as freelancers and media professionals who are seeking to report from their home country.

Selection:

The grant recipient will be selected by the Pulitzer Center, in consultation with African-based partner organizations: Sahara Reporters, Africa Check, Code for Nigeria, and BudgIT.
The grant recipient will be paired with mentors from the Pulitzer Center’s partner journalism organizations, who will help the grantee more fully develop the investigative story on land issues.

Selection will be based on the following criteria:

The story must take an investigative angle and focus on an under-reported aspect of land and property issues in Nigeria.
The proposal must include a data collection/data journalism approach. For example, data mining government documents, digitizing documents related to “off the books” land deals, creating datasets that reveal trends in land deals or tenure insecurity, or using data collected during reporting to create easy and simple to understand infographics.
The proposal needs to include a timeline and distribution plan for the story in the Nigerian media.
The strength of the proposed topic and the strength of the applicant’s work as demonstrated in their work samples.
Pulitzer Center are looking for projects that explore systemic issues related to land and property rights, and that provide an overarching thesis, rather than individual spot-reports from the field.

Applications include the following:

A description of the proposed project, including distribution plan, in no more than 250 words
A preliminary budget estimate, including a basic breakdown of costs. Travel grants cover hard costs associated with the reporting; please do not include stipends for the applicants. Fixer/translator/driver fees are acceptable.
Three samples of published work, either print or broadcast.
Three professional references. These can be either contact information, or letters of recommendation. The latter is encouraged when letters from interested producers or editors are available.
A copy of your curriculum vitae.

Applications may also include a more detailed description of project but this will be considered as optional supplement only. The most important part of the submission is the 250-word summary.
