The Young Scientist Innovation Award is targeted specifically at students/young scientists with innovative technologies for rural women smallholder farmers and persons with disabilities engaged in smallholder farming.
The award targetsagricultural learning institutions, and social science, and IT departments within Universities and polytechnics in the Eastern and Southern Africa region.
The Young Scientist Innovation Award includes two separate awards, targeting two stakeholder groups:
- Small scale women farmers:
This Award will acknowledge young scientific students’ gender-sensitive technologies that address the specific constraints that women face in rural development. It is expected that gender equality and rural women smallholder farmers are key components of their scientific projects and that rural women smallholder farmers are the specific target group.
- People with disabilities:
This Award will bring attention to the needs and opportunities of people with disabilities (PWDs) and acknowledge learning institutions and their students for their innovations that are specifically suitable for this target group’s engagement in rural smallholder farming (such as those assisting visually impaired or physically challenged farmers.
Consideration will be given to submissions which are relevant to the award categories and:
• Enhance food security
• Improve nutritional value
• Increase productivity and yield
• Add value and increase income potential
• Reduce labour and time intensity
• Respond to climate-related challenges
• Use locally available inputs
• Are affordable and socially sustainable
• Reduce postharvest loss
Eligible Countries:
- Burundi, Djibouti, D.R. of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya,Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia,South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

currently enrolled in a learning institution. Evidence of enrollment will be required. *Young female scientists encouraged to apply*
