HiiL SME Empowerment Innovation Challenge 2016 for SMEs & Startups across Africa (80.000 EURO PRIZE)

HiiL Justice Accelerator, together with the Ford Foundation, runs the SME Empowerment Challenge to promote justice solutions that empower SMEs across Africa. HiiL launched the SME Empowerment Challenge in 2015, resulting in 3 most promising initiatives that are currently being scaled. With the success of last year’s challenge, we continue our strong partnership with the Ford Foundation with the view to increase our impact in addressing challenges facing SMEs and emerging startups in Africa.

 The challenge process includes shortlisting, online campaigning, wildcard-selection, crowdfunding and pitching in front of an international audience.

Requirements:

In 2016 we welcome innovations that have a clear link with access to justice within the SME sector. Examples of innovations we seek include, but are not limited to:

  • Solutions that provide equality of opportunities for entrepreneurs to start a business

  • Services that secure better and affordable intellectual property rights for SMEs

  • Fraud- and corruption fighting tools that apply to businesses

  • Contract-enforcement mechanisms for businesses

  • Solutions that empower labour rights within the (informal) SME sector

  • Platforms that provide cost- effective and customized legal services for businesses (i.e. registration, legal advice, compliance, contracts, IP protection)

  • Data- and information sharing tools geared at legal needs of SMEs

  • Projects that promote enabling legislation, regulations and policies applying to SMEs

This year HiiL want to focus on expanding to more countries and regions.

  • Applications from these countries in Africa are very much encouraged: Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Cameroon and South Africa.

  • The winners of the challenge will receive acceleration support and an investment of up to 80.000EUR in total.
  • The best innovations will be featured on this website and receive global recognition. Through the Challenges you can win seed investments and further support.
  • The winners of the Challenges are announced at the Innovating Justice Forum in December 2016 in the Peace Palace in The Hague.

2016 United Nations International Law Fellowship Programme in Hague, the Netherlands (Fully Funded)

Applications for the 2016 International Law Fellowship Programme are currently being accepted.
The Fellowship Programme provides high-quality training by leading scholars and practitioners on a broad range of core subjects of international law. In addition, the interactive nature of the training allows the participants to share experiences and exchange ideas, which promotes greater understanding and cooperation on contemporary issues of international law.

The Fellowship Programme is intended to enable qualified professionals, in particular government officials and teachers of international law from developing countries and countries with emerging economies, to deepen their knowledge of international law and of the legal work of the United Nations and its associated bodies.
The Programme

  • The Fellowship Programme consists of an annual six-week summer course at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands. The participants attend lectures and seminars in international law organized by the Codification Division as well as the public international law session at The Hague Academy of International Law.
  • The lectures and seminars organized by the Codification Division are given by eminent scholars and practitioners in international law from different regions and legal systems.

Qualifications

  • To qualify for the Fellowship Programme, candidates must have a legal background with professional experience in the field of international law.
  • The selected participants are required to submit a medical certificate of good health and to certify that they are able to attend the entire course period.
  • The Fellowship Programme will accommodate 21 participants from developing countries and countries with emerging economies.
  • The 2016 Fellowship Programme will be conducted in French. Fluency in spoken and written French is required.
VENUE AND COURSE LANGUAGE
  • The Fellowship Programme will be held at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands, from 27 June to 5 August 2016.
  • The 2016 Fellowship Programme will be conducted in French. Fluency in spoken and written French is required.
  • Applicants whose mother tongue or language of instruction is not French are required to submit proof of their language abilities. Applications without a valid language certification will not be considered.
FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS AND ACCOMMODATION
  • Fellowships cover the fellowship recipient’s travel costs in economy class, accommodation, medical insurance, participation in the Fellowship Programme, the training materials and the registration fee for The Hague Academy of International Law.
  • In accordance with the policies and procedures governing the administration of United Nations fellowships, participants will also receive a stipend to cover other living expenses.
  • Qualified candidates may also apply for self-funded positions. Self-funded participants bear all costs associated with their participation (travel, accommodation, living expenses and registration fee for The Hague Academy of International Law). Training materials are provided to self-funded participants free of charge.

Two copies of the application form must be submitted:
(1) One scanned version of the signed original; and
(2) One electronic version (MS word or equivalent)
