Peace Child International runs three “Be The Change Academies” in West Africa. This programme seeks out disadvantaged young women with the germ of a business idea and then trains and mentors them to start and/or build up a viable business plan. The best of these plans receive funding from the BTCAs’ revolving loan fund.
Requirements
- Applicants should have some business knowledge and a demonstrable interest in one or more of the following: teaching, youth development, sustainable development, NGOs and/or international development.
Benefits
- Volunteers will be provided with accommodation, meals and pocket money plus health insurance and visa costs.
- Volunteers must attend initial training in the UK.
- Flights from the UK and back will be provided for those staying the full year.
Responsibilities
- Work with local organisers to deliver the 20 x training lessons;
- Recruit trainees and conduct accurate base-line assessments of their skills and competencies;
- Prepare Trainees Business Plans for presentation to the Selection Panel;
- Mentor trainees whose Business Plans are funded; find qualified local mentors to assist you;
- Execute the Monitoring & Evaluation and Certification processes, setting up reliable control groups;
- Work with government and donor officials to secure continuity funding to support ongoing BTCA training.
- Make sure that deadlines are set and met for the different components of the project.
- Develop and update the BTCA website, writing blogs and journals on the project.
- Assist in the preparation of accounts and weekly reports to the UK Headquarters;
- Fund-raising: identify potential funding sources; write letters and proposals, make phone calls, do pitches with local staff and volunteers to secure new local funding for the BTCA;
- Research and find out best practice from other local enterprise training and/or micro-credit enterprise creation organisations.
Qualifications:
Required
- Exceptional communication, presentation and organisational skills.
- Some business or entrepreneurial experience.
- Ability and willingness to provide 24/7 support for your young trainees.
- Competent IT skills.
- Ability to cope with challenges quickly and effectively.
- Flexible and adaptable (you will work closely with a local counterpart and may only be able to communicate with your trainees through an interpreter, as some do not speak English).
- Able to learn from local people who have experience in motivating and supporting young disadvantaged people.
Desirable
- Degree in business studies.
- Experience in writing business plans.
- Some teaching/facilitation experience.
- Dedication to sustainable development.
- Experience working with young disadvantaged women.
- Experience living or working in developing countries.
