What: 2014 West Afican Research Center (WARC) Travel Grant Program
Value: The WARC Travel Grant provides travel costs up to $1,500 and a stipend of $1,500.
The WARC Travel Grant program promotes intra-African cooperation and exchange among researchers and institutions by providing support to African scholars and graduate students for research visits to other institutions on the continent, the WARC Travel Grant provides travel costs up to $1,500 and a stipend of $1,500.
West African Research Center (WARC) is the overseas research center for The West African Research Association (WARA). It is located in Dakar, Senegal.  WARC is a center for academic exchange between American and West African scholars that encourages research on the region of West Africa.
WARC promotes scholarly research on West Africa and the Diaspora and works to foster cooperation between US-based and West African researchers, students and artists. In its development from initial conception to project planning, the Center seeks the active participation and cooperation of both West African and US-based scholars in order to identify and meet the needs of both communities.
Open To:
  • This competition is open only to West African nationals, with preference given to those affiliated with West African colleges, universities, or research institutions.
Travel grant funds may be used to:
1) attend and present papers at academic conferences relevant to the applicant’s field of research;
2) visit libraries or archives that contain resources necessary to the applicant’s current academic work;
3) engage in collaborative work with colleagues at another institution;
4) travel to a research site.
Application Procedure

BE SURE TO INCLUDE ALL OF THE DOCUMENTS LISTED; INCOMPLETE DOCUMENTS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.  LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE NOT CONSIDERED. 

*A brief (50-80 word) abstract of the activity to be funded, beginning with a clear statement of purpose

*A description (6 double-spaced pages maximum) of the applicant’s research and how the proposed travel is relevant to this work. This should be presented in a language understandable to non-specialist readers

*A curriculum vitae with research and teaching record when relevant

*If attending a conference, an abstract of the paper to be read and a letter of acceptance to the conference

*If visiting another institution, an invitation from host institution

*If travel is to consult archives or other materials, a description of the collections to be consulted and their significance to the applicant’s research

*All applicants must submit a letter of recommendation either by the professor overseeing their research or a colleague

*Proof of citizenship in the form of a photocopy of the applicant’s passport (please note: this competition is open only to West African nationals )

Nothingham University is offering 2 full tuition fee scholarships for the Developing Solutions Computer Science Masters Scholarship for West Africa.

available for students from West Africa.

You will be considered for this scholarship if you:

  • are a national of (or permanently domiciled in) West Africa AND
  • are classed as an overseas student for fee purposes AND
  • have not already studied outside of your home country AND
  • are not currently studying at a University of Nottingham campus or are not a University of Nottingham graduateAND
  • already hold an offer to start a full-time masters degree programme in the School of Computer Science at Nottingham for September 2014, on one of the courses listed below:
    MSc in Information Technology G507,
    MSc in Management of Information Technology G565,
    MSc in Computer Science G403.
  • AND have applied for our Developing Solutions scholarship.  Our Developing Solutions Computer Science Masters Scholarship for West Africa does not have a separate application form and students should apply using our Developing Solutions scholarship application form. You will be considered for both scholarships if you are eligible.

Application for admission to study at Nottingham must be received at least six weeks before the scholarship closing date to allow time for our Admissions office to process the application and confirm your offer, before you can apply for the scholarship.

ILC AFRICA ‘JUNIOR ASSOCIATE’ PROGRAM On behalf of United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

ILC Africa seeks to place bright and capable recent master’s degree and bachelor’s degree graduates into the following USAID-supported regional institutions in West Africa:

  • CILSS – Comité permanent Inter-Etats de Lutte contre la Sécheresse dans le Sahel/Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel http://www.cilss.bf/

Interested applicants should have a passion for operational efficiency and international development. This program is an opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience in West Africa while offering your latest skills learned from university programs and relevant work experiences.

ILC Africa seeks candidates with 1 to 5 years work experience with proven competencies to fill the ‘positions of interest’ below:

3. Scientific Writing / Editing / Technical Editing – Based In Bamako, Mali
4. Communications / Public Relations / Marketing – Based In Bamako, Mali

Program Details:
• Anticipated program period: September 2013 – August 2014
• A 12-month program where you will be placed in a West African country (Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger or Nigeria) depending on your skills and the needs of the organizations
• Junior Associates will go through a brief compulsory orientation program in Ghana before being placed in the host country.
• The supporting organization will provide a 50% subsidy of round-trip airfare and visa costs from your home country to Accra, Ghana. Junior Associates are to pay the remaining 50% of airfare to Accra, Ghana as their cost share.
• The supporting organization will provide 100% airfare and visa costs from Accra to your host country of Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger or Nigeria
• Fully-covered accommodations during the length of the year-long program
• A mobile telephone during the length of the year-long program
• A local living stipend to subsidize monthly personal living costs during the length of the year-long program
• Travel insurance
• Health care subsidy

The Junior Associate should possess the following specific skills/qualifications:
• Demonstrated skills in one or more of the positions outlined above
• Bachelor’s Degree required/ Master’s Degree preferred
• 1 to 5 years work experience preferred
• Ability to take instruction with great humility in a spirit of learning, apprenticeship and professional growth
• Those bilingual in French and English are highly welcomed. Fluency in either English or French will be considered
• Strong work ethic and spirit of dedication and commitment to address organizational gaps
• Demonstrated understanding of international development
• Outstanding presentation and public speaking skills
• High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, MS Word/Excel/and PowerPoint
• Mature and flexible attitude towards unstructured work environments and changes in work plans

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) is offering internship opportunities for three (3) candidates with communication background at its office in Accra, Ghana.

The aim is to expose interns to the work of the MFWA; freedom of expression issues within West Africa; and assist in project implementation. Interns will among other experiences benefit from practical work assignments to enhance their knowledge and skills.

A successful entrepreneur since he graduated from INSEAD, Freddy Salem (MBA ’66) has run several private businesses in West Africa, Russia and the US. Keen to foster economic development in West Africa, Freddy Salem supports education initiatives that develop business talent for the region.

Candidates for the INSEAD scholarships will need to demonstrate:

(a) academic achievement and promise

(b) aptitude for business and financial management, and

(c) a strong likelihood of spending the better part of their working careers in West Africa. In awarding these scholarships, INSEAD shall particularly seek candidates from Nigeria, Ghana, Togo and Benin.

Eligibility:

Candidates must be nationals from a West Africa country (preferably Nigeria, Ghana, Togo and Benin) and will have spent most of their lives and received most or part of their education in Africa. Preference will be given to candidates who require proven financial assistance.

We will review the essays submitted for INSEAD Need-based Scholarships
