2015/2016 EASST Visiting Scholar Fellowship for East Africans -University of California Berkeley, USA

The EASST Collaborative invites East African researchers to apply for a 4-month fellowship (sabbatical) at the University of California Berkeley, to be completed during the 2015-16 academic year.
The EASST Visiting Fellowship seeks to equip East African social scientists with the skills needed to
carry out rigorous evaluations of economic development programs. During a four-month fellowship,researchers will be based at the University of California Berkeley.
Fellows may visit either during the Fall semester ( approximately August 20- December 20, 2015) or the Spring semester (approximately January 20- May 20, 2016)
ELIGIBILITY
Eligible candidates for all EASST programs must:
  • Be a resident of an East African country participating in EASST (i.e. Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, or Uganda);
  • Have a PhD or Master’s degree (completed within the last 8 years) or be enrolled in a graduate program in economics, statistics, epidemiology/public health, or another social science discipline;
  • Hold a staff position at a research institution , university or other organization in East Africa, preferably one that supports policy- relevant, quantitative social science research;
  • Have participated in or have familiarity with impact evaluation research (either randomized or quasi-experimental studies);
  • Have participated in field-based data collection and rigorous empirical research/analysis;
  • Be computer literate,fluent in English, and a strong public speaker ;
  • Plan to return to a research institute in East Africa for at least 1 year after the fellowship; and
  • Demonstrate a commitment to building the capacity of African research institutions/universities
Benefits:
  • The fellowship program will pay for room and board in Berkeley, health insurance, monthly stipend, visa fees, and roundtrip economy air travel for the selected Fellow.
  • CEGA staff will provide mentorship not only throughout the semester, but also once the scholar returns home. Please note that the fellowship does NOT include financial provisions or support for any additional family members or spouses.
  • Upon completing the fellowship, scholars are expected to return to a university or research institute in East Africa and assume a leading role in the global effort to use rigorous evaluation and evidence for economic development.
  • Small grants of up to $8,000 will be provided to scholars who return to their home institution,to hold trainings in impact evaluation, build institutional capacity, or to forge new linkages with government policymaker
SELECTION CRITERIA
Successful candidates must:
• Demonstrate strong analytic skills, with past course work in economics or statistics.
• Demonstrate an interest in rigorous program evaluation, policy analysis, and micro-level field data collection.
• Submit a clear and innovative research proposal to evaluate a specific public policy or program, using randomized controlled trial or quasi-experimental methodologies.

2015 CrossCulture Internship Programme for study in Germany ( All Expense paid, monthly grant of 550 Euro).

With its CrossCulture Internships funding programme, the ifa (Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations) is advocating intercultural exchange and the strengthening of networks between Germany and Islamic world as a partner of the German Federal Foreign Office.

The programme enables internships for young professionals and volunteers from the participating countries and from Germany. International experience is gained and intercultural competence developed through work stays in another culture. CrossCulture internships open up and strengthen the exchange between people, institutions and cultures and thus enable an enhanced partnership between Germany and Islamic countries. Regional particularities are taken into account through the subdivision into three regional modules:

  • South Asia
  • Central Asia
  • Other Islamic countries (particularly in the Middle East, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula)

The programme offers young professionals and volunteers from Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Libya, Jordan and Morocco the opportunity to expand their professional and socio-political competence through internships and to gain intercultural experience in the host country – with the aim of creating new partnerships between the Arab partner countries and Germany and to deepen existing cooperation. Scholarship holders will become multipliers who will contribute to the development of democratic structures after their return to their home countries.

The aim is to bring young people and their organisations into contact with each other beyond cultural boundaries in order to open up new perspectives on development and social change.
In addition to offering grants for internships, CrossCulture Plus is funding smaller projects of CrossCulture Alumni which strengthen the civil society structures in the countries involved.

Areas of emphasis and target groups

CrossCulture Plus offers internships in the following work areas:

  • Knowledge society & education
  • Legal dialogue, justice & human rights
  • International politics & civic education
  • Environment
  • Economy & development cooperation
  • Media
  • Culture & art

The target groups in the transformation countries are young professionals and volunteers from various areas of civil society and multipliers in reform relevant organisations and media.

Organisation of the internship

  • The internship will last at least eight weeks and up to a maximum of three months and will be individually scheduled according to profile, needs and availability. The internships will be supplemented by a tailor-made framework programme – for example, accompanying events like an intercultural workshop or individual visits – during the stay in the host country.
  • The internships are characterised by the fact that they can be individually adapted to the requirements and wishes of the scholarship holders both in terms of content and organisation. Thanks to this personalised and needs-oriented concept, they are very well-suited in supporting the programme participants to acquire professional and intercultural competence in their specific area of work and thus extending their ability to engage in dialogue.

Eligibility Requirements:

Requirements for taking part in the CrossCulture Internships programme include

  • A good command of English and a permanent involvement in an organisation or institution in one’s own country. Knowledge of the German language is an additional qualification, not a requirement.
  • Applicants should be aged between 23 to 45 years.
  • Currently enrolled university students will not be considered for selection. Furthermore the applicants must be in good health.
  • Their physical as well as mental working capacity must be sufficient for the requirements of a longer stay abroad and the essential work requirements of the internship.

Benefits

  • The interns’ travel and subsistence expenses are covered by the programme funds. This includes a monthly grant of 550 Euro, travel costs to Germany and urban local traffic, as well as visa fees, health insurance and accommodation.
  • The latter is either a private room in a shared flat (according to gender), a private room in a host family or a small furnished apartment.
  • Accommodation includes cost for electricity, water and heating; whereas telephone and internet facilities are not included.

Selection Procedure

The filled in and signed application forms along with a passport picture are to be submitted via e-mail to the German diplomatic mission of the applicant’s home country. The application deadline is 31 January 2015 (date of receipt at the German diplomatic mission). Only complete e-mail applications will be processed! 2015 MEPI Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarship Program for North Africans

The Tomorrow’s Leaders Scholarship Program is a MEPI initiative for capable and highly motivated high school seniors in the Middle East and North Africa who are from underserved backgrounds. The program will provide four-year university scholarships and internship opportunities at select institutions of higher learning in the Middle East to students who have the potential to become leaders.

Eligible students include men and women who represent the region’s cultural, religious, and geographic diversity and are from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, who could otherwise gain admission to, but would be unable to afford, four years of college.  Tomorrow’s Leaders scholarship recipients should be prepared to begin the program in the Fall 2015 term.

The program intends to nurture leadership skills and the spirit of civic engagement and volunteerism among outstanding university-age students at the American University of Beirut, the American University in Cairo, and the Lebanese American University.  Selected students will join the 225 Tomorrow’s Leaders already studying at these universities.

Eligibility:

Applicants are being recruited from Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank/Gaza and Yemen

Eligibility:

  • Current high school senior or applicant who graduated from high school in 2014;
  • Citizen or national of Algeria,Egypt,Libya,Tunisia;
  • Strong academic credentials;
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English with a minimum Institutional TOEFL (ITP) score of 490 (or equivalent on a similar test)  that is less than two years old;
  • Maturity, flexibility and leadership potential;
  • Ability to start the program in August/September of 2015.

 

 

Scholarship Worth:

  • Scholarship recipients may pursue an undergraduate degree in a selected field at one of the three host institutions.
  • In addition to their studies, recipients will be expected to engage in community service activities and participate in internships.
  • Limited English-language training will be provided for some participants.
  • Participation in the program includes: travel, academic fees for four years of university at AUB, AUC, or LAU, a study abroad experience in the U.S., accident and sickness insurance, housing, and a monthly allowance during the school year.

The purpose of the fellowship is to engage young open-minded leaders and support their growth as change-makers to effectively contribute to the region’s democratic transition. The retreat will include interactive activities, meditation sessions, lectures and discussions providing the participants with new skills for non-violent resistance. They will wield the power of their position responsibly, with care for others in their heart, as a result of embodying the qualities of meditation.

This fellowship will be the first of its kind in the MENA region to bridge this gap between inner transformation and social change, which will lead to transformational activism.
Objectives

2014 MENA Scholarship Programme to study in Holland.

The MENA Scholarship Programme (MSP) offers around 140 scholarships a year to professionals. The scholarships can be used for selected short courses in the Netherlands.

The MENA Scholarship Programme (MSP) was initiated by the  Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which also fully funds the programme.  The MSP was set up in 2007 as a result of the growing interest, both  in the Arab world and the Netherlands, in strengthening mutual ties  in the areas of education, culture and trade.
The programme enables professionals from ten selected countries to  do a short course in the Netherlands. The scholarships are  proportionally distributed among the participating countries. Ideally,  half of the scholarships are allocated to female applicants.

For Whom:

 

  • The MENA Scholarships are distributed proportionally among the ten participating countries (Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Syria and Tunisia). Ideally, half of the scholarships are allocated to female applicants.
  • The MSP target group consists of professionals (with a maximum  age of 45) who are nationals of and working in one of the selected  countries.
  • While scholarships are awarded to individuals, the need for training  must be demonstrated in the context of the organisation for which the  applicant works.
  • The training must help the organisation develop its capacity. This means that employers must nominate an applicant and  motivate his or her application in a supporting letter.

Scholarship Worth:

  • International travel costs,
  • Medical insurance

Selected courses

You can use an MSP scholarship for a number of selected short courses in one of the following fields of study:

  • Economics, commerce, management and accounting;
  • Agriculture and environment;
  • Mathematics, natural sciences and computer science;
  • Engineering;
  • Law, public administration, public order and safety;
  • Humanities, social sciences, communication and arts.

The short courses are offered by educational institutions in the Netherlands, which provide professional training at post-secondary level.

Duration

All courses have a duration of between two and twelve weeks and will start between June 2014 and February 2015.

How to apply

Applications for the MENA Scholarship Programme (MSP) should be submitted to the Netherlands Embassy in your own country before the scholarship application deadline.

The application form should be accompanied by the following necessary documents

  • Evidence of proficiency in speaking and writing the language of instruction;
  • An employer’s statement (download the requirements below);
  • A complete copy of your passport or other official identity document;
  • Certified copies of educational records in English or French (provide translations if necessary);
  • A detailed curriculum vitae (CV) in English;
  • One current photo;
  • A copy of your birth certificate (if requested by the Embassy).

The Swedish Institute’s Young Leaders Visitors Programme (YLVP) is an annual intercultural leadership programme that aims to lay a foundation for dialogue, mutual understanding and knowledge sharing among young leaders from the Middle East, North Africa and Sweden.

The YLVP is designed to provide the participants with new skills, broadened networks and innovative tools to strengthen their work to drive social change in their respective contexts. The participants are visionaries who are in a position to make a difference. They are young, open-minded leaders in Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank-Gaza, Yemen and Sweden who are actively working for democracy and human rights within the spheres of society, culture, politics and media.

  • Work actively for democracy and human rights.
  • Be between 20-32 years old (at the time of the start of the programme).
  • Have a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English.
  • A citizen of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia, West Bank-Gaza, Yemen or Sweden

The American Middle Eastern Network for Dialogue (AMENDS) is a student initiative at Stanford University that brings together the most promising youth change agents from across the Middle East, North Africa, and United States to learn from each other, connect with global leaders and resources, and share, through TED style talks, their ideas and experiences with the world.

AMENDS has three main components: networking, summit, and the AMENDS Talks. During the summit, delegates will share their ideas, collaborate on their initiatives, and interact with world leaders in workshops, panel discussions, and formal networking events. This year, the AMENDS summit will take place on April 9-14, 2014.

The conference will culminate in the AMENDS Talks, presentations from all of the delegates on their initiatives, ideas, and experiences.These presentations will be shared online for the world to see. Delegates will be selected based on the level of their dedication to promoting change in the MENA region and/or in U.S.- MENA relations.

They will also heavily consider the past experiences and backgrounds of each delegate that will enable him/her to contribute a unique perspective to the conference, in order to ensure a rich, diverse group of delegates.

As a participant in the AMENDS conference, your lodging, food, and conference expenses will be covered. Participants who have the financial means to contribute to their travel expenses (plane, train, etc) will be expected to do so. If selected as a delegate, the AMENDS Team will assess your level of need, offer a corresponding travel subsidy, and work with you, when possible, to acquire a travel grant or scholarship from your university or organization.

However, the application process is need-blind and AMENDS hopes to ensure that financial concerns do not prevent anyone from participating in the summit. Being selected as an AMENDS delegate entails a commitment to continue giving back to your community, country, and world. Delegates are expected to remain active members of the AMENDS community after the conference.

Applicants currently living outside of the United States:

In the event that you are accepted to serve as a delegate, please keep in mind that you will need a passport that is valid at least six months from the time of the conference and an American visa. We will do our best to assist you in the visa process should you need one. In addition, English proficiency is required. Please make sure to fill out the entire application. You will also need to copy/paste a current resume, in addition to any website links, e-articles, or certificates you believe highlight relevant accomplishments.
