2015 Spark Changemaker Programme for Kenyan Social Entrepreneurs (JULY 2015)

Changemaker [noun] : Local impact entrepreneurs launching great ideas in very poor areas to improve the lives of people in poverty.

Spark* finds and supports these Changemakers and connects them with opportunities that will help them grow their impact, bringing more people out of poverty

Spark is looking for Kenyan social entrepreneurs who:

  •  Have already launched a social enterprise that is already making a difference in the lives of tens of people living in poverty.
  • Want to scale their social enterprise to impact many more people living in poverty.

The Spark* Changemaker Program is a powerful opportunity for passionate Kenyans who are at the early stages of building social businesses and organisations that exist to make a difference for people living in poverty. If you are successful in your application you: 

–  ATTEND THE CHANGEMAKER ACCELERATOR –

  • An intensive five day live-in workshop in Nairobi where you join a small group of Spark* Changemakers and access world class social entrepreneurship training designed to help you focus your non-profit or business and accelerate the growth of your venture.

– ACCESS THE CHANGEMAKER SUPPORT NETWORK –

  • Beyond the accelerator you receive ongoing training and support from Spark* International and we connect you to experts and professionals who can help you as you launch and grow your non-profit or social business.
  • Specifically Spark will provide you with three years of access to graphic designers, website creators, business coaches, mentors, research assistants, lawyers and accountants (all super helpful for you as a social entrepreneur working to grow your venture).
  • You also have the opportunity to continually apply for small grants (approximately 15,000-20,000 KSH) to help you overcome barriers and test ideas to grow the impact or sustainability of your venture.

– ACCESS POWERFUL CONNECTIONS – 

  • Spark* is an official pipeline partner with a number of powerful organisations that can help you scale a proven social enterprise including Ashoka, Echoing Green and the Unreasonable Institute as well as impact investors to help you raise capital if you are a social enterprise.

PROGRAM COST

  • Each successful applicant are asked to contribute 10,000 KSH to the cost of the program. This amount helps Spark* provide you with 5 days of accommodation, food, transport and world class training as well as three years of ongoing support and connections.
  • The cost to Spark* is much higher but Spark request that you make this contribution to help us cover a small portion of the expenses we will incur.
  • If you are not able to make 10,000 KSH contribution, you are encouraged  to seek sponsorship from friends, family, or your community.

You will be notified of the status of your application by the 15th of June 2015.

Kenya National Volunteers Program for recent university graduates.

As part of this programme, the Government of Kenya seeks to recruit high performing recent university graduates to serve as Volunteer Graduate Assistants in primary schools for an un-interrupted period of 1 year. They will provide education support and serve as ‘education ambassadors’ in the surrounding community. Two volunteers will be placed in each participating primary school and will receive a modest living stipend of KShs. 6,000 per month.

he Kenya National Volunteers Program is a national service programme which aims to meet three key objectives:

  • Create enriching opportunities for over 30,000 unemployed Kenyan youth
  • Promote national cohesion
  • Improve educational outcomes for over 2 million primary aged children
  • Volunteers MUST have completed their course work and any related research
  • Volunteers MUST hold a University Degree in any area of study
  • Volunteers MUST have officially graduated from their Universities at the time of applying

Requirement:

  • If you are 22 – 30, a recent University Graduate, Interested in Volunteering, Interested in Self Improvement, Actively Searching for a Career, Ambitious, Driven, Hard Working, Brave & Adventurous and Disciplined

TRAINING AND DEPLOYMENT

  • The selected Volunteers will participate in a 3-week intensive residential training course that will be aimed at preparing them for their placement, and increasing their job skills.
  • Volunteers will be trained in key skills that will carry them into future employment.
  • After training, Volunteers will be deployed in pairs to their placements, first meeting county and district officials, participating head teachers, school management committee members and other Volunteers in their region.
  • Volunteers will be deployed to another County other than their own and will stay with a host family during the 1 Year in the field.

Selection Process:

  • Successful candidates will be selected through a rigorous and competitive selection process.
  • Success will be determined by a combined score based on your online application, correct responses to essay questions, correct responses to a series of online tests and success based on an assesment by independent and professional in-person interviewers.
  • These reviews will ensure that a high-quality cohort of volunteers who understand and are committed to the programme’s objectives are selected.

Benefits

  • At the conclusion of the one year of service, Volunteers will graduate and receive an official completion certificate.
  • The names of the Volunteers who successfully complete the programme will be gazetted and their service recognized.
  • Following the graduation ceremony, many Volunteers will begin their internships, mentoring opportunities, jobs or start their own businesses.
  • Graduates will also be expected to maintain an active alumni network that will further build on their professional skills, networking opportunities and build the programme’s visibility.
  • ACCESS TO KENYA’S EMPLOYERS
    • After 9 months of service, Volunteers will gather at a Career Fair and Capacity Building Workshop.
    • During the event, Volunteers will receive training and guidance on career development.
    • Representatives from the Private, Public and Non-Profit sector will give motivational talks, and skills training to the Volunteers and will meet with top-performing individuals in small groups.
    • These representatives will review evaluations of the Volunteer’s performance with the pupils in the schools that the Volunteers have been serving in.
    • They will shortlist some Volunteers to enter into existing in-house internships and mentoring programmes in their companies. Volunteers who are successful in these companies’ assesment process will be offered internship, mentoring and job opportunities.
    • All Volunteers will return to their placements and complete the final months of their Volunteering assignment.

Intel Student Partner program  is designed to enable students at leading universities across the country to have the opportunity to work closely with Intel and understand our latest technologies.  The program is for students who realize the best technology careers come to those who chase their dreams.

The Intel Student Partner program offers technical training, incredible connections, and extraordinary opportunities. You merit sneak peeks at development tools, and industry-defining software applications. In turn, you are asked  to inspire your peers by sharing and promoting these new technologies and benefits on campus.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria are:

  1. University Status: Applicant must be enrolled in a full time program at a recognized university in Kenya, South Africa or Nigeria.
  2. Academic Excellence: Applicants must have a Grade Point Average of minimum B (or equivalent) from a recognized university. Proof of Grade Point Average in the form of academic transcripts is required.
  3. Leadership Experience: Applicants must demonstrate that they have previously organized and lead other students in running or implementing a project or event that is of value to the University community.
  4. Familiarity with Intel Products: Applicants must demonstrate that they have working knowledge of Intel product categories, specifically Intel Graphics Performance Analyzers, Intel’s cross-platform tools such as Intel® XDK,
  5. Applicants must also be active members of the Intel Developer Zone, and have an understanding of Android application development. Android application development knowledge will be verified during interview, where candidates will be required to perform a brief technical exercise. Intel Developer Zone membership will be verified by including your IDZ username in the registration process.

What will You Get

Successful Intel Student Partners will receive the following benefits:

a) Profiling within the IDZ Africa Zone as a Student Partner.

b) Opportunity to participate in Intel Events locally and internationally. For any event that requires travel, Intel will cover all associated, reasonable costs (transport, accommodation and board) on behalf of the Student Partner based on actually incurred costs only supported by a valid proof of payment.

c) Intel Student Partners merit sneak peeks at development tools, and industry-defining software applications that are public but may not be readily available in your specific market.

d) Intel Student Partners will have access to mentors within Intel to support them build their global network and career skillset.

e) Monthly Stipend of $50 in equivalent local currency for every month that they are in full time enrolment at the University (excluding holiday months) which will be subject to additional contractual obligations with a local 3rd party agency that will be contracted by Intel Corporation. Additional contracts will need to be signed between the selected partners and the 3rd party agency.

f) Branded Intel Merchandise:  Branded Jacket, Branded T-Shirt, Branded Laptop bag, Branded Laptop Cover., of approximately $200 in value

Duration

Starting from 15th November 2013 Participants can apply at any time during the duration of the Program and will be notified within 1 month regarding the status of their application. Successful applicants will remain Intel Student Partners for the duration of 1 year, which is renewable subject to performance. Intel, at its sole discretion, may determine the end date of the Program.

The list of successful applicants will be posted here, and all successful applicants will all be directly contacted via email.

Delivery of the Prizes to the successful applicants

Branded merchandise will be delivered to successful Student Partners at their respective Universities, during the Induction program. Monthly stipend will be paid by the 3rd party agency directly to the Student Partners bank account on a monthly basis.

Call for Proposals: The Learn4Work Program 2013 (Promoting Vocational Education in Africa).

The Learn4Work program supports improved labour-market oriented vocational education in Africa. With funding from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Learn4Work provides co-financing, training and advice to partnerships between Dutch and African organizations that lead to substantial and sustainable income for youth in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. Learn4Work will thus contribute to enhanced food security and economic development in Africa.

The long-term, overall objective of Learn4Work is to contribute to substantial and sustainable income for youth/young people, and particularly those who are marginalised for one reason or the other.

The main emphasis of the call is on access to improved quality vocational education that ensures its relevance for and outflow to the labour market in 4 African countries. The implementation should be conducted in an international, multisectoral (public-private) partnership construction. The results of the project need to contribute to food security in its broadest sense.

Countries of implementation

Projects need to be implemented in one of the following countries:

  • Ethiopia
  • Ghana
  • Kenya
  • Rwanda

Partnerships consist of at least 4 partners from the implementing countries and from the Netherlands:

  • One African private sector actor.
  • One African TVET provider (formal or non-formal).
  • One Dutch actor with experience in development cooperation.
  • One Dutch actor with particular expertise related to the demand from the southern partners.

 

Key eligibility criteria:

  • Demand from local labour market related to the TVET providers is central.
  • Clear link between private sector organization and TVET provider in the project country.
  • Project contributes to food security in its broadest sense.
  • Commitment to document, develop concepts, and share experiences with Learn4Work network and beyond.

Applicants are encouraged to submit concept notes that address one or more of the following themes: 

  • Agriculture
  • Automotive industry/auto mechanics
  • ICT
  • Tourism & Hospitality

Value and duration:

  • A total amount of € 900.000 from Learn4Work fund is available for the second call.
  • Minimum total project budget € 50.000.
  • Maximum contribution from Learn4Work per project is € 175.000.
  • Learn4Work contributes to a maximum of 34% of the total project budget. A total own contribution of 66% is required.
  • Audit requirement.
  • Project duration is minimal 12 months and maximum 36 months.
