Our continent is on the rise and it is Africa’s young leaders that will take us into the future. To this end, the Mail & Guardian is sponsoring two dynamic young African leaders for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to attend the One Young World Summit 2013, taking place in Johannesburg this year. The M&G is a South African-based news publication that prides itself on being Africa’s best read.

The M&G, as part of our commitment to developing young leaders on the continent, will fully sponsor two delegate places to this year’s summit. In addition, we will cover the travel cost for each delegate from his or her home cities to Johannesburg, if necessary. We’re on the hunt for very special candidates to attend this leadership and development conference.

One Young World generally looks for candidates with proven leadership ability, and a passion for volunteering and a concern for global issues. We want to sponsor two candidates who display that, and more. As a news publication dedicated to online innovation, we want to sponsor two candidates doing interesting things in the digital and tech space.

The Mail & Guardian Online was the first internet-based news publication in Africa, and has repeatedly received awards for its digital innovation. We want to sponsor someone who shares this DNA with us. Perhaps you have been involved in a project that uses digital tools to improve agriculture, social development or media freedom. Whatever it is, we want to hear about it. Do you have what it takes? Candidate criteria includes the following:

• One Young World delegates are 18-30 years old at the time of the summit • Demonstrate leadership potential and skills (many have already had an impact in their home countries on a range of issues) • Teamwork • Concern about global issues • Ability to generate and articulate impactful ideas • A commitment to volunteering or other extracurricular activity (evidence required) In addition, the M&G requires the following for our two candidates: • Involved in some sort of leadership or community project involving digital tools and/or tech innovation • Display an innovative approach to solving some of the problems facing the continent • Candidates must be nationals of, and residing, in any African country The following pages require you to complete your ‘One Young World Candidate Profile’ which serves as your application. You will be expected to demonstrate the following in your summaries: • Describe to us the work you have been involved in, and how it involves digital tools and/or tech innovation. • You must show why you deserve to be M&G’s sponsored candidate for One Young World Summit 2013

What is 100 Bar None?

100 Bar None is an initiative to enable young people from 100 less represented countries to attend the One Young World Summit 2013. The scheme will allocate full Summit sponsorship to 100 candidates from countries often less visible on the world stage.

At the One Young Summit 2012 in Pittsburgh, USA we were joined by some of the brightest minds and active change-makers from 183 countries. Among non-governmental events, only the Olympic Games gathers together more countries.

Whilst we are extremely proud of this, our aim is to have all 196 countries represented at the One Young World Summit 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

100 Bar None is an essential part of our strategy to achieve this goal.

What does the sponsorship cover?

100 Bar None sponsorship covers the full delegate fee of £2,750 + 14% South African VAT. This fee includes the cost of:

Delegate access to the One Young World Summit 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa

Hotel accommodation on a shared basis on the nights of 2, 3 and 4 October

Catering which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner on 2, 3 and 4 October and breakfast only on 5 October

Transport to and from OR Tambo International Airport, transport between the Summit accommodation and the Summit venue

Summit hand-outs and support materials

Flights to and from Johannesburg are also covered by 100 Bar None sponsorship.

Am I eligible?

You could receive 100 Bar None sponsorship if you:

Are an 18 – 30 year old with a passion for world issues and an evidenced commitment to affecting positive change

Are a national, resident or have strong ties to one of the 100 countries listed below

How do I apply for 100 Bar None sponsorship?

If you are from one of the 100 eligible countries but have not registered as a candidate to attend the 2013 Summit APPLY HERE

If you have already registered as a candidate to attend the 2013 Summit and you are eligible for 100 Bar None go to your profile dashboard where you will be invited to complete a series of supplementary questions. Complete the questions and re-submit your profile to enter the running to receive 100 Bar None sponsorship.
