Code for South Africa Data Journalism School 2016, South Africa

Code for South Africa is launching Africa’s first data journalism school in February 2016.

The three-month-long training programme will consist of a combination of theoretical and hands-on practical work. Participants will spend much of their time each day working in a data newsroom.

In addition to data and social media journalism training, the school will also be a centre for news innovation. Through the newsroom, we will experiment with different approaches to delivering content to audiences, with an emphasis on actionable news. Code for South Africa is actively involved in ongoing projects that promote innovation in the media space through the use of data-driven storytelling and the school will play an important role in achieving this.

Requirements:

  • Each intake will consist of up to eight junior to mid-level journalists.
  • They will have the opportunity to gain practical data journalism skill-sets that will equip them to deliver compelling data-driven multimedia stories.
  • The school will be run by a combination of experienced and award winning journalists, coders, data wranglers, analysts and content specialists.
  • Modules will also include specialist topic lectures by high impact guest lecturers from local and international newsrooms.

  • In order to promote data-driven storytelling in South Africa, the programme is heavily subsidised by our donors.
  • The price for the programme is R18,000 over the three months.
  • Media houses will be responsible for all costs of their trainees, including accommodation and transport. Course bursaries and monthly stipends available based on merit.

2014 Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship

The Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship (AAE) recognize and award exceptional entrepreneurial leaders who serve as role models to Africa’s aspiring entrepreneurs and demonstrate business excellence, innovation and profitability.

There are five (5) award categories which recognize entrepreneurs at different stages of the entrepreneurial cycle:

  • LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – Awarded to a senior African business leader who has served as an entrepreneurial icon for several decades and has left an enduring legacy of success in Africa;
  • TRANSFORMATIONAL BUSINESS AWARD – Awarded to a leading business with revenues greater than USD 50 million that has created significant socio-economic impact in Africa under the direction of a notable business leader;
  • OUTSTANDING MATURE BUSINESS AWARD – A USD 100,000 prize to an established company led by a strong business leader who has generated revenues between USD 5 million and USD 50 million;
  • OUTSTANDING GROWING BUSINESS AWARD – A USD 50,000 prize to a young remarkable African business with revenues between USD 500,000 and USD 5 million;
  • OUTSTANDING SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR AWARD – A USD 50,000 prize awarded to an organization that demonstrates outstanding innovation and entrepreneurship while sustainably addressing the socioeconomic development of low-income communities in Africa.To be eligible, the organisation, which may be structured as a non-profit or for-profit must: have been founded or be currently run by an African citizen; demonstrate annual revenues of between USD 150,000 and USD 2.5 million in the last financial year; and be primarily focused on social return.

Eligibility

The 2014 Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship is open to Africa-based entrepreneurs with firms that are fully registered in the continent and that:

  • Have revenues of over USD 150,000 for social entrepreneurs and over USD 500,000 for all other categories;
  • Have been profitable for the last two consecutive years;
  • Are independent, that is, not a subsidiary of a foreign entity;
  • Are free of legal actions.

The 2014 Awards ceremony will be held in Kigali, Rwanda in November during the 2014 Annual Gathering,

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE AN ACUMEN FELLOW? BE PART OF A NEW GENERATION THAT’S REDEFINING LEADERSHIP.

Established in 2006, the Global Fellows Program is a 12-month fellowship for individuals dedicated to serving the poor and who have the business and operational expertise, and moral imagination needed to effect long-term social change. The fellowship begins with an eight-week training program in the Acumen New York office, where Fellows learn about business models for the poor, hone their leadership skills, and learn more about Acumen.

After training, each Fellow works for the CEO or senior management of an Acumen investee on a critical business issue facing the organization. Fellows have worked on projects ranging from leading operations of a new business unit at a cotton ginnery in Uganda, to expanding the clinic network of a pharmacy company in India, to developing branding strategies for a microfinance institution in Pakistan.

Since 2006, we have received more than 4,400 applications from 100 countries and trained 63 Fellows from 21 countries. After the Fellowship year, Fellows continue to create social change, with 85% of the alumni currently in leadership positions at socially progressive organizations such as IDEO.org, Bridge International Academies, Endeavor, Bamboo Finance, New Island Capital, We the Change Foundation, Living Goods, Ashoka, Omidyar Network, and The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition.

FELLOWSHIP YEAR OVERVIEW

LEADERSHIP TRAINING

September to mid-November

The Global Fellowship begins with two months of intensive training at the Acumen offices in New York.  The training curriculum is based on the three core principles of moral imagination, financial expertise, and operational expertise. Acumen partners with some of the foremost organizations to deliver this leadership curriculum.

FIELD PLACEMENT

Mid-November to August

For nine months, Fellows work at one of Acumen’s portfolio companies as key staff members. Fellows work directly with entrepreneurs, interact with customers, and grapple, first-hand, with the complex issues of addressing the needs of the poor.

DEBRIEF & BEYOND

September & Onwards

Fellows return to New York to share their experiences and lessons learned with the Acumen staff and community.  Fellows receive career development support to assist with their post-Fellowship career plans.  After the Fellowship, Alumni remain connected through bi-annual gatherings, newsletters, participation in future selection processes, and other opportunities.

Making All Voices Count: A Grand Challenge for Development is a global initiative that supports  innovation, scaling-up and research to deepen existing innovations and help harness new technologies  to enable citizen engagement and government responsiveness.

The Programme is implemented by a  consortium consisting of Hivos (Humanist Institute for Development Cooperation, lead organization),  the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and Ushahidi.

The Programme is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the UK Department for International Development  (DFID), Omidyar Network, Open Society Foundations and the Swedish International Development  Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

The Programme will offer grants, broker exchanges, and support capacity development. In addition to  granting strategies, the Programme also carries out brokering and capacity development activities to  actively stimulate the transfer of ideas and models between actors in different contexts and deploy  dedicated staff for capacity development among the grantees and research cohorts.

Eligibility:

This Call For Proposal is open to the following applicants:
• Individuals
• Organisations.
For the purposes of this CFP, “organisation” includes: all registered non-government  associations; charities or societies; faith-based organisations; community-based organisations;  not-for-profit and for-profit companies and corporations; (inter)national non-governmental  organisations, social enterprises; and government (any Ministry, department or agency at any  level: local, municipal, district, (sub-) regional or national)
• Universities; colleges; academic institutions; research institutes
• Private sector companies and entrepreneurs with a keen focus on development

The following are ineligible:
• Political parties or initiatives which aim at proselytizing
• Organizations not adhering to democratic principles
• Any other applicant deemed inappropriate (at the discretion of the Programme)

Geographic requirements
For this first call, applicants may be based anywhere but must show that their proposed activities have a  clear link of demonstrable impact in one of more of the following countries: Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya,  Liberia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Grants and Worth

Making All Voices Count aims to fund collaborative efforts, rather than one-sided approaches, and will award funds for the following three components:

  1. Innovation: Backing innovative ideas and technology solutions
    Innovation Grants (10-40,000 Pounds)
    Gender Grants (40,000 Pounds)
  2. Scaling: Scaling successful initiatives and responses
    Scaling Grant ( 40-100,000 Pounds Sterling)
    Gender Grants  ( 40-100,000 Pounds Sterling)
  3. Research and Evidence: Building an evidence base as to what works and whyResearch Grants ( £30 – 75,000)

Originally established in 2007 by the Legatum Group, the Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship are now hosted by the African Leadership Network (ALN). ALN believes that the surest way for Africa to create prosperity is through entrepreneurship. In line with this, ALN hopes to inspire as many Africans as possible to pursue the path of entrepreneurship through the Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship.

The Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship recognize and award exceptional entrepreneurial leaders who serve as role models to Africa’s aspiring entrepreneurs and demonstrate business excellence, innovation and profitability.

Since its inception, AAE has attracted more than 7,000 applications from African businesses and awarded prizes of over USD 1.5 million to 30 leading companies.

The AAE’s objectives are to:

  • Create a platform to spotlight and celebrate business excellence in Africa
  • Build a strong network of African entrepreneurs as role models and a source of best practice
  • Promote entrepreneurship as a driving force for Africa’s prosperity
  • Encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to embrace the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship
  • Attract venture capital inflows towards good businesses across the continent

Selection Process

Nominees will be selected through a rigorous and transparent selection process. A team of business analysts, auditors and market and sector experts will review and shortlist the most outstanding nominations across each of the five categories.
The Finalists will be judged by an international panel of leading business experts through interviews and comprehensive reviews of company reports based on the following criteria:

  • Sustainability and innovation
  • Profitability and growth
  • Long-term business strategy
  • Leadership, culture and values
  • Investment in employees
  • Social and economic impact on communities

No financial data on the selected companies will be divulged without the companies’ consent. The decisions of AAE with respect to all aspects of the selection process are final and binding on all applicants without the right to appeal.
