Nordic Africa Institute’s Nordic Scholarship Programme 2019 for Africa-oriented studies in the Nordics (Funded)

The aim of the Nordic Africa Institute’s Nordic Scholarship Programme is to offer a 1-month stay at the Nordic Africa Institute in order to facilitate use of the Institute’s library collections on contemporary Africa (books, periodicals, newspapers, and government publications), and to create links to existing research at the Institute.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Master students, PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers pursuing Africa-oriented studies/research in Social Sciences and Humanities and affiliated to universities and research centers in Sweden, Finland and Iceland are eligible candidates, regardless of citizenship.
  • Africa-oriented journalists and writers within the discipline of Social Sciences and Humanities in Sweden, Finland and Iceland can also apply for a scholarship.

Financial support and other benefits

  • The scholarship covers travelling expenses for the least expensive fare from residential address (in Sweden, Finland and Iceland) to Uppsala and return.
  • The scholarship holders are provided with a desk and computer in a shared office at the Institute and free accommodation centrally located in Uppsala.
  • The scholarship also include a subsistence allowance of SEK 200 per day and free photocopying up to a maximum of 1,000 copies.

Please note: The scholarship does not include health care insurance or other insurances.

Appendices

  • Up-to-date CV, including list of publications (if any).
  • Outline of research project, 3-5 pages:
    – Objective of the research project: The research topic should be clearly identified and contextualized within its academic discipline.
    – Method and time frame: Describe how the research project will be accomplished, state the research method, data gathering techniques and time frame.
    – Theoretical explication: A brief indication of the theoretical basis of the research project must be included.
    – The applicant should clarify what part of the research project he/she will work upon during the stay at the Nordic Africa Institute.
  • Reference: A signed letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor or head of department, which confirms current affiliation and field of research. (Scanned versions of signed support letters can be emailed by the applicant.)

The scholarships are awarded once per year. Applications must be in by 8 October 2018. (for scholarships in 2019)

Nordic Africa Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme 2019 for Africa-based researchers (Fully Funded)

The purpose of the Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme is to provide opportunities for Africa-based researchers with a PhD to pursue their own research projects, thereby indirectly strengthening the academic milieux in African countries. The scholarship offers access to the Institute’s library and other resources that provide for a stimulating research environment. Through the programme,the Nordic Africa Institute can establish and maintain relations with and between African and Nordic research communities.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The scholarship programme is directed at postdoctoral researchers based in Africa and engaged in Africa-oriented research within the discipline of Social Sciences and Humanities.
  • The applicant should be affiliated to an African university/research center and have a proven track record of extensive research experience.
  • The Institute strives to achieve a fair distribution of scholarship positions in regards to gender and geographic focus.

Benefits:

  • The scholarship includes a return air-fare (economy class), accommodation, a subsistence allowance of 300 SEK (approx. 34 USD) per day plus an installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approx. 280 USD) and access to a computer in a shared office at NAI.
  • The maximum duration of the stay is 90 days, minimum is 60 days. Please note that the subsistence allowance will be provided only for the days spent in Uppsala. Also note that most academic institutions in the Nordic countries, including the Nordic Africa Institute, are closed or at least running at a reduced capacity during the periods 15 June–15 August and 15 December–15 January. Applicants are thus asked not to choose these periods for their visit.
  • The Institute’s library is specialized in literature on contemporary Africa and focuses on Social Sciences. Guest Researchers also have access to the Uppsala University Library, including their online resources, and to the Library of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
  • Guest Researchers have the possibility to present their research at the Nordic Africa Institute and to visit other institutions in the Nordic countries.

  • Up-to-date CV, including list of publications (if available online, please include links)
  • Outline of research project, 5 pages:
    – A well elaborated research proposal; the research topic must relate to the research themes of the Institute
    – A work plan, including expected results, specific for the time spent at the Institute
  • Reference: A signed letter of support from the applicant’s Head of Department or other senior scholar in the same field, which confirms current affiliation and field of research. (Scanned versions of signed support letters can be emailed by the applicant.)

Please note that incomplete applications will not be considered. Persons currently or previously employed by or otherwise professionally affiliated with the Nordic Africa Institute are not eligible for scholarships. Kindly also note that the application must be in English. In the extraordinary event that the Scholarship Programme for 2018 does not receive full funding, applicants will be informed immediately.

The Nordic Africa Institute invites applications for positions as Short term Researcher.

The Institute’s research and learning activities are guided and informed by the following principles and values, namely high academic quality and standard, policy relevance, and interdisciplinary perspective. In addition, the Research Unit ensures that the Institute research priorities and agendas pay attention to the expressed concerns and feedbacks from critical stakeholders.

The key thematic areas of the Institute are:

  • Economic growth and challenges of inequality and poverty
  • Climate change and sustainable development
  • Conflict, security and democratic transformation
  • Mobility and migration
  • Gender equality

Experience and Qualifications

  • PhD degree in social sciences or humanities ; interdisciplinary program or a related field (e.g., Development Studies, Law and Development, Natural Resource Management, Gender Studies, Economics, Political Economics, Geography)
  • At least five years of relevant experience in interdisciplinary research related to the thematic areas identified by the Institute;
  • Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and data analysis techniques;
  • At least five years’ experience conducting research on African issues and, related topics, including research for use in policy development;
  • Excellent analytical skills and evidence of scientific publication are required;
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English;
  • Good computer skills, specifically knowledge of data entry, processing and analysis;
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Priority will be given to researchers who have expertise in the thematic areas that the institute currently lacks

Expected Outcomes

The short term researcher shall carry out specific tasks to achieve the following expected outcomes in the Institute results framework provided for in the 2017 Action Plan:

  • High-quality and policy relevant research on modern African issues related to the identified thematic areas in the NAI Strategy, 2017-2021;
  • High quality scientific publications and other useful materials for knowledge sharing and policy engagements;
  • Active engagement with the policy environment based on results of research on Africa;
  • Active participation in academic and policy platforms such as conferences, seminars and workshops on modern Africa, organised by NAI and its partners; and
  • Contribution towards strengthening networks and partnership on the study of modern Africa in the Nordics and globally.

Deliverables:

Under supervision of the Head of Research the short term researcher shall deliver the following:

  1. Work plans/proposals detailing the scope and focus of proposed research activities within the thematic areas. The proposal must provide detailed research framework, methodologies and details of key issues to be studied and a list of any documentation, and data required;
  2. Comprehensive plan for proposed publications including timetables and list of identified publishing outlets; and
  3. Prepared manuscripts for various forms of publication (to be submitted during or at the end of employment period).

The application should contain:

A. A complete CV with a list of publications.

B. Copies of the applicant’s own publications relating to his/her research.

C. The names and addresses (phone, fax, e-mail) of at least two referees.

Contract period will be six months. Salary is negotiable within the current levels at the Institute.

The purpose of the Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme is to provide opportunities for scholars in Africa to pursue their own research projects, thereby indirectly strengthening the academic milieux in African countries, and to provide opportunities for scholars in Sweden, Finland and Iceland to pursue their own research projects. The programme offers scholars access to the Institute’s library and other resources that provide for a stimulating research environment. Through the Programme, the Nordic Africa Institute can establish and maintain relations with and between African and Nordic research communities

Eligibility Requirements:

The Guest Researchers’ Scholarship Programme is directed at scholars

  • in Africa engaged in research on/about the African continent and with a proven track record of extensive research experience. The applicant should be placed at or affiliated with an African university or other African research institution.
  • in Sweden, Finland and Iceland  engaged in research on/about the African continent and with a proven track record of extensive research experience. The applicant should be placed at or affiliated with an university or other research institution in Sweden, Finland or Iceland.

Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply for these scholarships.

Applications are invited from scholars with research projects related to one or more of the following research themes at the Institute:

  1. Agrarian Change, Property and Resources
  2. Conflict, Security and Democratic Transformation
  3. Mobility, Migration and Transnational Relations
  4. Urban Dynamics
