Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs is pleased to announce its two annual international contests. Around the world, politicians, scientists, and scholars are debating how we can solve urgent global problems, from inequality to climate change.

But the future belongs to you, this generation of students, and we want to learn about your ideas on the following topics. These are challenging issues. Whether you choose to express yourself in words or in photos, we’re looking for thoughtfulness, originality, and vision.

International Student/Teacher Essay Contest, 2015: Goals for a Better World

Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs announces its seventh annual International Essay Contest, open to teachers and students anywhere in the world.

This year, the carnegie council is asking you to write about one of three selected Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs will replace the Millenium Development Goals when they expire at the end of 2015.

ESSAY TOPIC: Focusing on one of the following SDGs,  propose specific measures for your country (or region or city) to reach the goal’s objectives in the next 15 years.

  • Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls: OR
  • Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts: OR
  • Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

CONTEST REQUIREMENTS:

  • Style: Op-ed style (not academic, footnoted papers)
  • Length: 1,000 to 1,500 words
  • Format: Word document, or email. English language entries only.
  • Limit: One entry per person.

This competition is open to teachers and students of all nationalities.

All teachers, at whatever level, are eligible.

All students, from high school students through graduate students, are eligible. Non-students are automatically disqualified.

Collaborative essays between students and teachers are welcome.

Previous winners and honorable mentions are not eligible.

CLIMATE CHANGE: International Student Photo Contest

Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs announces its third annual International Student Photography Contest.

This year’s topic is Climate Change: Send us your photos that show examples of climate change OR examples of combating or adapting to climate change.    

The contest will be conducted on Carnegie Council’s Global Ethics Network,  social media platform for exploring the role of ethics in international relations. Check out last year’s winners on the theme of Fairness and its Opposite, and see below for details on how to participate.

ELIGIBILITY:

All students of every nationality are eligible. Non-students will be disqualified. The minimum age is 13.

TOPIC:

Climate Change: Send us your photos that show examples of climate change OR examples of combating or adapting to climate change.

DEADLINE: January 5, 2016

The World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) is a unique global contest which brings together young developers and digital entrepreneurs – under 30 years of age – who use internet and mobile technology to put the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) into action and make a difference.

The WSYA selects and promotes best practice in e-Content. It demonstrates young people’s potential to create outstanding digital contents and serves as a platform for people from all UN member states to work together in the efforts to reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

How to participate?

Young creators of digital content are able to register their products themselves via an online platform. An international young expert jury will then judge the projects/products and select 3 winners and 2 runners-up in each of the six WSYA categories.

The 2013 ONE Africa Award ($100,000 Prize for MDG Driven Projects)

The 2013 ONE Africa Award—a $100,000 USD prize—celebrates these innovations and progress towards achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the world’s blueprint to a better future, ranging from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education.

The ONE Africa Award aims to recognize, reward, and advance the exceptional work of organizations, founded by Africans and based in Africa, dedicated to helping Africa achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The $100,000 award will bring recognition to innovative African efforts to fight poverty and will incentivize more of such efforts (The award may be split into two prizes in order to award two smaller organizations better able to absorb a smaller monetary award.)

Award recipients can be exceptional organizations and other groups demonstrating commitment and success in assisting Africans in meeting one or more of the MDGs through innovative advocacy based programs.

– Qualified recipients may be engaged in direct services to achieve any of the MDGs but must demonstrate a strong advocacy component integral to the delivery and success of their programs.

– Qualified recipients may be advocacy/pressure groups and think tanks engaged in governance activities such as the monitoring of flows of resources and/or holding governments accountable to commitments to MDG attainment.

2013 Award Criteria

The 2013 ONE AFRICA Award will award best practices by an African organization or individual addressing social development issues through innovative advocacy in promotion of MDG attainment.

Organizations will be graded in 5 categories and will be awarded between 1-10 points in each of these categories:

1. Extent to which the organization has designed and implemented an innovative advocacy program that employs new approaches to impact in a given sector(s).

2. Ability to demonstrate and communicate specific indicators of progress and impact linking work to a given sector(s) in a clear results-oriented framework.
3. Demonstration of the ability to replicate efforts of the organization to take intervention to scale.

4. Demonstration of strong internal and constituency accountability mechanisms (i.e. community leadership consultations and involvement in programs to demonstrate the interventions are relevant to the majority of the poor in the target community and empowers them in a sustainable way) along with transparency of operations.

5. Extent to which the organization has employed creative partnerships to achieve its goal(s) and ensure coordination with other development actors. These partnerships may include public and/or private sector players.

BONUS: For the 2013 prize, organizations that demonstrate specific projects, initiatives and plans to accelerate the attainment of the MDGs in their country in these last 1000 days of the MDGs will receive up to 5 bonus points in the scoring of their applications. The successful organizations will clearly demonstrate results already obtained through these efforts.

The eligible organizations must be founded by citizens of the African Union’s member states and be registered and based in a member state of the African Union. Evidence of success in previous projects as well as funding support for previous project activities must also be included.

Shortlisted applications will undergo a due diligence process in September.

ONE will informally review the award winner’s project activities and progress a year following the receipt of the award.

Seed Funding Grant For Africa Europe Youth Cooperation 2013 (2000 € Grant per project/organisation)

Seed Funding for Africa Europe Youth Cooperation is a grant allocation intended to promote Africa Europe youth exchanges, networking and political participation of non state actors.

It aims at funding initiatives which provides the possibility for youth leaders, youth workers, experts and trainers to participate in Euro African Youth activities and youth exchanges projects. The grants are of a maximum 2000 € per project/organisation.

The aim of the North-South Centre’s Youth Programme is to raise European awareness of issues of global interdependence and solidarity and to promote cooperation and exchanges between Europe, the Southern Mediterranean and Africa.

More specifically, the objective is to provide training and capacity building for young people and youth organisations as well as to facilitate active participation of youth in development policy-making, reinforcing the role of youth as a dynamic force in the field of North-South interdependence.

Aim

The seed funding aims to strengthen the role of youth organisations as civil society actors and youth leaders’ ability to organise and take action as well as strengthen young people’s political participation in Euro-African cooperation.

Eligibility Criteria for applicant organisations and projects

  •  The application should be submitted by a youth organisation, network or nonstate actor at local, national, (sub)regional or international level that is active in promoting Africa Europe youth cooperation;
  •  Applicant organisation must have a bank account open in the name of the organisation, since payments will be made through bank transfers only;
  •  Priority is given to projects presented by organisations coming from Africa and/or from the African Diaspora Living in Europe, and organisations/networks that submit projects which will allocate the grant support for African youth participants in the project and/or participation of African Diaspora in the project;
  •  The participants in the project benefiting from the grant should be under 35 years of age;
  •  Innovative projects with an experimental approach are encouraged to apply; Projects that respond to the thematic priorities Youth Unemployment and
  • MDGs-Beyond 2015, identified as working priorities for 2013-2014 in the framework of the Africa-Europe Youth Platform, are highly encouraged in this call.


Eligibility of expenses
The following costs are eligible for the grant:

  •  International travel
  • Local transport
  • Board and lodging
  • Visa expenses
  • Fees for experts (i.e. trainers, facilitators, speakers, etc)The organisation which receives a seed funding grant will be notified at the latest 4 weeks after submission of project description and will thereafter sign an Administrative Arrangement with the North-South Centre for the execution of the financial support. After the implementation of the project (end of eligible period) the beneficiary must submit a narrative (of the results and main outcomes of the project) and financial report of the project to the NSC.

Deadlines for submission of application

  • The projects eligible for seed funding must be implemented during the period 15 April –15 October 2013, with no possibility for postponement.

  • The deadline for submission of applications is 4 March 2013. Please note that the
  • Administrative Arrangements will have to be signed in April 2013.
