The Bloomberg Initiative To Reduce Tobacco Use

Funded by Michael R. Bloomberg and managed by The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids

A global initiative to reduce tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries was launched in 2006 with funds from Michael R. Bloomberg. A competitively awarded grants program is an important part of the Initiative. The grants program supports projects to develop and deliver high-impact evidence-based tobacco control interventions.
The grants program is managed by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
 
In the first eighteen rounds of the grants program, 195 grants were approved in 53
countries.
Requirements:
While applications are welcome from all low- and middle-income countries (as categorized by the World Bank), the Initiative places a priority on countries with the greatest number of tobacco users.
Approximately two-thirds of the world’s tobacco users live in fourteen countries: China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Ukraine, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
Who can apply for a grant?
Governmental and non-governmental organizations based in eligible countries can apply for grants.
1) Governmental organizations include, but are not limited to, national Ministries, state/provincial authorities and affiliate offices.
2) Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) with relevant advocacy experience aimed at changing or implementing policies including but not limited to civil society organizations and educational institutions.
3) Applicants must be recognized legal registered entities capable of entering into contractual arrangements, receiving foreign funds and assuming legal and financial obligations.
4) NGO applicants cannot be the recipients of financial support from any tobacco product manufacturer or the parent, subsidiary or affiliate of a tobacco product manufacturer.
The grants program does not fund individuals.
What kind of projects will be funded?
Proposals must focus on achieving policy change that will lead to substantial reductions in tobacco use. The grants program gives priority to projects that lead to sustainable improvements in tobacco control laws, regulations, policies and programs at the national or sub-national level (e.g. provinces, states), including (but not restricted to):
  • Tax and price measures, including anti-smuggling measures
  • Direct and indirect advertising bans and effective enforcement of bans, including promotion and sponsorship
  • Establishment of smoke-free workplaces and public places, and effective enforcement of smoke-free policies
  • Implementation of graphic warning labels on tobacco products
  • Other evidence-based regulatory/legislative initiatives
The grants program can also support, where improving tobacco policy is their central goal:
  • Development of strategic alliances and coalitions
  • Monitoring & Countering Industry behaviour and practices
  • Strategic litigation
Submitting your ideas for a project
Applicants should first submit a short “Project Idea” using the online system at: www.tobaccocontrolgrants.org.
Applicants may submit more than one Project Idea, however, duplicate proposals will be deemed ineligible.
The deadline for submitting Project Ideas is 12:00 hours, US Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5 hours) on Friday, 22 July 2016
Applications will only be accepted in English.

The Bloomberg Initiative (BI) Grants Program was started in 2006 to support projects that develop and deliver high-impact, evidence-based tobacco control interventions.

The BI Grants Program provides funding to government ministries and agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations, and universities in more than 60 countries.

The Bloomberg Initiative Global Initiative to reduce tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries was launched in 2006 with funds from Michael R. Bloomberg. A competitively awarded grants program is an important part of the Initiative. The grants program supports projects to develop and deliver high-impact evidence-based tobacco control interventions.

Tobacco kills more than 14,000 people every day. Unless urgent action is taken, tobacco will kill 8 million people a year by 2030, 80 percent of them in developing countries.

To address this global public health crisis, Michael R. Bloomberg, philanthropist and mayor of New York City, launched a global initiative to fight tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries, where more than two-thirds of the world’s smokers live.

Funding:

Proposals can be submitted for grants from US$50,000 up to a maximum amount of US$500,000.  Short-term, one-year or two-year project proposals will be considered.

Micheal Bloomberg Launches Bloomberg Media Initiative for Africa

Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg L.P., philanthropist and 108th Mayor of New York City, on february  3rd 2014 announced the launch of the Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa,

a three-year pan-African program to build media capacity, convene international leaders and improve access to information in order to advance transparency, accountability and governance on the continent. The initial focus of the $10 million commitment will be on Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.

Timely and accurate reporting of business and financial matters play a critical role in advancing efficient markets and is a key driver in supporting economic and social growth. Strengthening business and economic news coverage, expanding training programs for journalists and providing greater access to reliable data about Africa are frequently cited as important enablers to the continent’s continued development.

The Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa will provide cross disciplinary education programs and mid-career fellowships to increase the number of highly-trained business and financial journalists, convene pan-African forums to examine worldwide media best practices and support research to stimulate media innovations.

“Reliable data and financial analysis bring transparency to markets and promote sound economic development – and they can help keep Africa growing and creating opportunity,” said Michael R. Bloomberg.

“The Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa will foster collaboration, support professional growth and nurture the leaders who are contributing to the continent’s very bright future.”

Bloomberg will partner with preeminent faculty from the University of Nairobi’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications and Strathmore Business School in Kenya; the University of Lagos’s Department of Mass Communications and the Pan Atlantic University’s Lagos Business School in Nigeria; and the Rhodes University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies and the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science in South Africa to develop and deliver educational programs focused on business, economics, public policy, finance and journalism to enhance the skills and knowledge of media professionals.

“The Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa is not only topical, timely, relevant and useful, but it is also contemporary both in structural and conceptual pluralism,”

said Dr. Ralph A. Akinfeleye, Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Lagos in Nigeria. “By providing rigorous training from best-in-class faculty, media professionals and other stakeholders from the South, East and West African countries, the initiative will positively impact transparency, accountability, good governance and sustainable economic growth on the continent.”

Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa will also provide scholarships to the next generation of media professionals and experiential training opportunities to graduate students.

Linus Gitahi, CEO of the Nation Media Group in Kenya, said,

“More and well-trained journalists serve the public interest by enabling the media to provide fuller coverage of key development issues. We applaud Bloomberg for making this welcome investment in the education and training of African journalists.”

In collaboration with partners including the Ford Foundation, Bloomberg will host annual forums for African leaders and international experts to examine emerging trends and discuss media best practices. There will be a fellowship program to reward and enhance excellence in media.

“This effort to deepen the coverage of complex issues holds the promise of advancing good governance and transparency, strengthening civil society organizations and providing the citizens of South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria with crucial information to bolster their democracies,” said Darren Walker, president of the Ford Foundation.

“We have collaborated with Bloomberg on many important initiatives in the United States, such as urban development and the transformative power of arts and culture with impressive outcomes. The ability to bring about substantive change puts Michael Bloomberg in a distinct class embodying the best of philanthropy.”

Bloomberg also plans to collaborate with the Ibrahim Foundation and ONE, as well as international institutions such as United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), on a feasibility study to explore a platform for accessible, comprehensive, accurate and up-to-date economic data and information to promote African development.
