McGill University and the Mastercard Foundation are pleased to offer full scholarships to economically challenged, academically gifted Master’s students from Sub-Saharan Africa through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. This scholarship program is designed to sponsor outstanding, community engaged students to attend university who otherwise would not have the opportunity, thereby, fostering the development of future Sub-Saharan African leaders and entrepreneurs.

In addition to financial support, Scholars are provided with a comprehensive support network that includes an array of mentoring and support services to ensure each student’s academic success, community service engagement and transition to socially relevant employment opportunities.

To be eligible for consideration for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Master’s Program at McGill, you must:

1.Be admissible to one of the eligible programs at McGill University (see Program List below);
2.Have never registered for /completed any graduate studies;
3.Be nominated by a current McGill Professor or Staff Member from the department you wish to apply to (see Nomination Form);
4.Be a citizen of and have lived a significant part of your life in a Sub-Saharan African Country (see List of Eligible Countries);
5.Have an exceptional record of service and activity in your school and/or community;
6.Have an intent to return to your country immediately upon the completion of your degree with the goal of transforming your community through social and economic development;
7.Demonstrate that your financial status is in the lowest two quintiles of your country.
8.Must be less than 35 years old at the time of application

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Selection Committee begins to make scholarship offers April 1, 2020

Application Procedure:

Please read the following steps carefully:

1.Prospective applicants can find the full list of MCF eligible programs here: https://www.mcgill.ca/mastercardfdn-scholars/apply-program

Once a program of interest has been identified, the applicant must consult the departmental requirements as well as the standard graduate admission requirements,to verify that they are eligible to apply. Please note that meeting the minimum graduate admissions requirements does not guarantee nomination for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program or admission to McGill University.

2.If the minimum requirements are met, the applicant may request nomination from the department via email. This request should have the following information enclosed:
-University Transcript
-Curriculum Vitae (CV)
-Short Personal Statement (max. 350 words).

3.The nomination made by the department acts as a verification step. If an applicant has been nominated, they will be prompted to create an account on the uApply portal and share the username with the nominating department.

The applicant MUST wait until they have been nominated before creatingan account in order for the application to be considered for the MCF scholarship.Please note that being nominated does not guarantee admission to McGill University.

4.Once nominated(department must send the completed nomination form to [email protected]),the applicant will be issued a fee waiver and should complete the admission application in uApply. They should upload the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Application Form, sponsor letter and bank statement to the uApply checklist.

5.The applicant should request their Referee complete the MCFSP Recommendation form and return the completed form by email [email protected].

6.Once all of the requested documents have been received,the department will review the application.-If the applicant is admitted to their program of study, their MCFSP application is pre-screened. Ifselected at the pre-screening stage,the application moves on to the MCFSP Selection Committee for review. -If the applicant isrefused admission, they are no longer eligible for the scholarship.

7.Successful applicants will be notified in April 2020 if they have been selected for the 2020 Cohort of the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program at McGill University.

University of Abomey-Calavi Becomes First Francophone West African University to Join Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

300 Next-Generation African Leaders and Entrepreneurs to Receive Quality Education and Entrepreneurship Training.

The University of Abomey-Calavi’s commitment to educating next-generation African leaders received a boost today with a seven-year, USD$6.2 million commitment from the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. The new partnership, which for the first time expands the Scholars Program to Francophone West Africa, will benefit 300 bright young Africa leaders and entrepreneurs with a high-quality education, creating pathways to careers in science and technology, as well as business and entrepreneurship for youth whose academic talent and promise exceed their financial resources.

“The University of Abomey-Calavi is proud to collaborate with the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, a partnership which has energized our commitment to youth leadership and entrepreneurship education,” explained Professor Brice Sinsin, President of the University of Abomey-Calavi. “We envision leading change in our community by putting students and researchers at the heart of local development, and fostering greater involvement of graduates through social action campaigns and community development projects.”

“Young Francophone Africans deserve every chance to study and thrive,” says Peter Materu, Director of Education and Learning and Youth Livelihoods, the Mastercard Foundation. “Strengthening higher education in Francophone West Africa is critical to ensuring that the region can meet the needs of growing markets. By working with the University of Abomey-Calavi, the Foundation hopes to foster stronger academic relationships and partnerships with other Francophone universities, improving higher education enrollment rates across the region.”

The Scholars Program at the University of Abomey-Calavi will have two components: the first will emphasize access to quality education for 200 Scholars in the fields of agronomic sciences, engineering sciences, computer sciences, and renewable energy. These students will also be admitted into the university’s pre-employment service, a workforce made up of graduates of the University of Abomey-Calavi focused on social entrepreneurship and will enable Scholars to share values and gain valuable work experience.

The second component of the partnership will focus on providing technical expertise for the development of ‘Startups Valley’, a business incubator program created by the University of Abomey-Calavi. Startups Valley will provide 100 Scholars with an opportunity to sharpen their entrepreneurial skills and mindsets, setting them on the path to successful entrepreneurship and enabling them to launch their own businesses, employ other students, and contribute to their economy.

The University of Abomey-Calavi joins a global network of 29 universities and non-governmental organizations committed to over 35,000 bright young leaders with a deep personal commitment to changing the world around them and improving the lives of others. University of Cape Town MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program 2018 for study in South Africa (Fully Funded)

The Mastercard Foundation has partnered with the University of Cape Town (UCT) to provide 338 scholarships over 10 years to academically talented yet economically disadvantaged students from Sub-Saharan Africa for study at UCT.

The Scholars Program is a $700 million initiative to educate young people – particularly from Africa – to lead change and make a positive social impact in their communities. Scholars will receive comprehensive scholarships, academic support, peer mentorship, career guidance, internship opportunities, transition-to-work support and access to a global alumni network.

Through the scholarship scholars may pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies at the University of cape Town. Students enrolled in the program will receive mentoring, leadership development, academic and life skills support. For the 2018 academic year, 58 scholarship opportunities are available ( 13 Undergraduate, 15 Honours and 30 Masters)

The scholarship’s tenure is for the full period of the academic program for which the Undergraduate Scholar has enrolled, with the second and subsequent years dependent on satisfactory academic progress and co-curricular involvement.

Duration

  • Tenure for the Honours level scholarships is one year.
  • For Masters level the scholarships tenure is two years, dependent on academic progress and co-curricular participation of the Scholar.

Undergraduates

Selection criteria

  • Candidates must have received a firm offer to study at UCT
  • Candidates must come from an economically disadvantaged background
  • Candidates must demonstrate leadership capability and must have acted in a leadership capacity
  • Candidates must meet the set academic criteria (see no. 3 below)
  • A condition of the award is that graduates return to their home country and invest their gained skills and knowledge into the social and economic growth of their country

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration for The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Target group

  • Be a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country
  • Be undergraduate study applicants
  • Be admitted to an undergraduate programme and commence with their first year of registration in any of the faculties at UCT
  • Be from an economically disadvantaged background and demonstrate financial need
  • Candidates who intend to register for a second undergraduate degree are ineligible to apply for this scholarship

Academic criteria

  • Only candidates who have applied to the relevant academic department at the University of Cape Town are eligible to apply for The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town awards.
  • Successful candidates will be required to produce the original academic transcripts on registration at UCT.

Postgraduates

Honours

  • Only candidates who have applied to the relevant academic department at the University of Cape Town are eligible to apply for The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town awards. Although each academic department has its own academic criteria, a minimum of 60% for undergraduate or an equivalent degree is the general academic criterion required for entry into the Honours programmes.
  • Successful candidates will be required to produce the original academic transcripts on registration at UCT.

Value of the Scholarships

The scholarships are considered to be full-cost and will include full cover for the following:

  • Visa costs
  • Transport costs to and from South Africa
  • Full tuition and international student fees
  • Full accommodation, subsistence and living expenses
  • Research costs as approved or recommended by UCT and the Foundation
  • Access to internship opportunities and cover of related costs
  • Medical aid

University of Toronto MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program 2017/2018 for students from Sub-Saharan Africa to study in Canada (Fully Funded).

Are you a student from Sub-Saharan Africa who has demonstrated academic talent and a personal commitment to giving back to your country, but you face significant economic barriers to higher education? If so, we invite you to apply to the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program.

If you are selected, you will receive a scholarship equivalent to the costs of attaining a Bachelor’s degree, including travel, tuition, textbooks, housing, food and living expenses. You will also receive financial, academic, social and post-graduation support which will enable you to gain the experiences and skills you need to succeed.

The University of Toronto and the MasterCard Foundation have partnered to offer the MasterCard Foundation African Scholars Program. The program provides full scholarship opportunities at the University of Toronto for economically disadvantaged youth who have excellent academic potential and a strong desire to create lasting development within their respective regions.

Eligibility

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is open to students who are residents and citizens of a Sub-Saharan Africa country. You must be a first-time applicant to the University of Toronto who has not yet begun university study elsewhere. If you are a transfer student, you are not eligible for the program.

In order to be eligible, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a resident and a graduating high school student of a country within Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Demonstrate financial need correspondent to that of the lowest two quintiles of your country
  • Have very strong academic results within your school system
  • Have a record of leadership and extracurricular involvement
  • Maintain a strong desire to return to Africa to assist and work towards enhanced regional socioeconomic development
  • Be graduating from a recognized secondary school, or have completed the necessary academic requirements
  • Fulfil the necessary English requirements (dependent on country)

Please note that both academic and English requirements differ based on the country and educational system you are coming from.

Benefits:

  • The scholarship will provide full expenses related to travel, tuition, books, food, housing, living expenses and any other program related expenses, for the duration of a four year undergraduate program.
  • Throughout the duration of the student’s undergraduate career, there will be a variety of academic and personal supports including mentoring and transition assistance programs. In addition, there will be internship, placement and travel opportunities included in the program.

How to apply

This scholarship opportunity is available for first-entry undergraduate programs in either the Faculty of Arts & Science or the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering at the St. George campus.

A completed application includes the following components:

  • A completed online application – all applicable sections must be filled out, including contact information, financial information, personal details and responses to essay questions.
  • Financial documents – upload a scanned copy of financial documentation.

  • Two references – provide the names and contact details of two individuals who will serve as your referees. We will contact your referees directly and ask them to submit their letter of reference through a secure website.

MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program 2016/2017 at McGill University in Canada (Fully Funded)

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program provides academically talented young leaders from low-income backgrounds with access to a world-class university education. In all, The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill will welcome 91 Scholars from Sub-Saharan Africa, including 24 at the Master’s level. Unique to McGill, some Scholars are from French-speaking countries and will receive intensive English language training before starting their degree programs.

A central goal of The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is to create a globally educated and highly qualified group of future leaders, who, upon graduation, can return to Africa to help foster the region’s development. Toward these ends, McGill complements the Scholars’ education with a comprehensive support system that includes mentorship, tailored support services, community service opportunities and sustained programming relevant to their personal development. Scholars also receive guidance and funding for two internships in their home countries during their studies. The internships aim to sustain the Scholars’ connection with their home countries and build a path toward meaningful employment post-graduation.

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill is coordinated through the Office of the Dean of Students with support from the Office of the Deputy-Provost (Student Life and Learning).

Eligibility Criteria for Undergraduate Applicants to The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program

  • You must qualify academically for admission to McGill University. Please note that admission is competitive; see Admissions Guide.
  • You must be a first-time applicant to university (transfer applicants are not eligible).

Undergraduate Acceptance to The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program

  • You must demonstrate an exceptional record of service and leadership in your school and/or your community.   • You must be committed to returning to Africa after graduation to continue to give back to your community and country.

MasterCard Foundation Undergraduate & Masters Scholarships 2017 at Michigan State University – USA (Fully Funded)

The MasterCard Foundation has partnered with Michigan State University to provide full tuition scholarships to undergraduate and Master’s degree students from sub-Saharan Africa.

The Scholars Program is a 10-year, US $500 million initiative that will enable 15,000 academically talented students from economically disadvantaged communities (mostly in sub-Saharan Africa) to attend secondary school and/or university.

Scholarship recipients are chosen from a pool of students who have demonstrated academic talent, are economically disadvantaged, and have a personal commitment to serve their countries or regions of origin. Through leadership and career training, financial, academic, social, and post-graduation support, The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at MSU ensures that Scholars are equipped with the academic and professional skills and competencies needed to make significant contributions to economic growth and social development in their respective countries of origin.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at MSU targets students living in sub-Saharan Africa who are economically disadvantaged (ranking in the lower 40 percent in their origin country based on family economic background and income).
  • Applicants must live on the continent; the only exception is for applicants who are studying outside Africa on a full scholarship and who qualify on the basis of economic disadvantage. To apply, students must be either:
  • First-time freshmen who have not yet started a bachelor’s degree (including those who have done a “gap year” after high school).
  • New master’s scholars who have not yet started a master’s degree program. Master’s programs must be 2-year programs and begin in the fall semester (August).

Doctoral students, transfer students, and students with dual citizenship in the U.S. and a sub-Saharan nation are not eligible to apply.

The Program aims to benefit 17,000 young people over 10 years, mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa. At UC Berkeley, the Program will provide comprehensive financial, social, and academic support up to 118 students from 2012 to 2020, and is open to both undergraduate and professional Master’s students.

Eligibility Requirements:

The five main eligibility criteria are:

  • Being a citizen of a Sub-Saharan African country – If you have refugee status, are stateless, or have other questions regarding your citizenship, you may still be eligible. Please contact us directly to clarify. This scholarship is not intended for citizens of North African countries.
  • Excelling academically – All prospective Scholars must first be admitted to UC Berkeley to be considered for the Scholarship. An important criteria for admission to the University is demonstrated academic excellence.
  • Coming from an economically disadvantaged background – We aim to admit those from the bottom two income quintiles per country. This Scholarship is designed for those extremely talented individuals who have no other means of acquiring the further education required to help realize their dreams and ambitions.
  • Having demonstrated the will to give back to your community, country, or continent – We are looking for well-rounded students who are engaged in activities beyond the classroom. Some may be directly related to your field of study, but this may also include other issues (social, economic, political) that you are working on and passionate about. Applicants should elaborate on their achievements both in their application to UC Berkeley, and then later on the Scholarship application.
  • Having expressed the desire and intention to return to your home country after completing your studies – We are looking for students who are engaged with and passionate about issues affecting their communities, and who will take advantage of their education at UC Berkeley to better equip themselves with the knowledge and training to address these issues upon return. While important work can be done from abroad, the intention of this Program is to enable Scholars to return home, after forming valuable professional connections through internship and job placements.

Undergraduate:

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC for undergraduate students is open to first-time applicants who are residents and citizens of a Sub-Saharan African country. This program targets academically qualified, yet economically disadvantaged, young people in Africa who will contribute to the transformation of the continent.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for consideration as an undergraduate for The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC, the nominee must:

  • be a citizen of and residing in a Sub-Saharan African country;
  • present economically disadvantaged financial circumstances, and be able to show they lack financial means from family or other sources to pursue post-secondary (university) education in their home country or elsewhere;
  • have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances, and show leadership qualities or potential;
  • demonstrate an interest in and commitment to giving back to his/her home community in ways that enhance the economic growth and social development of Africa, through engagement in activities outside the classroom, in the school and/or community;
  • be graduating/recently graduated from a recognized senior secondary school;
  • be applying for their first undergraduate degree in one of the following Faculties at UBC’s Vancouver campus:

    • Faculty of Applied Science (Engineering)
    • Faculty of Forestry (Bachelor of Science in Forestry)

  • have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances, and show leadership qualities or potential;

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program is a $500 million, 10-year initiative to educate and prepare young people – particularly from Africa – to lead change and make a positive social impact in their communities.

The Scholars Program provides young people from economically disadvantaged communities who have demonstrated academic talent and leadership potential with access to quality and relevant education.

The Program will serve an estimated 15,000 young people at the secondary and university levels. It has a particular focus on Africa, which is the world’s youngest continent and is experiencing unprecedented growth

Eligibility Requirement:

The program is open to residents and citizens of Sub-Saharan African countries. Students must be first-time applicants to MSU. Transfer students are not eligible for the program.

Earth University Costa Rica offers the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship program for Students from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean to study for undergraduate degrees in Agricultural sciences and Natural resources management 2013/2014. Scholarship is for the entire duration of undergraduate study.

EARTH University, Costa Rica has a seven-year partnership with the MasterCard Foundation to provide scholarships to young leaders from disadvantaged communities in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Through the partnership, the Foundation will provide 120 undergraduate scholarships amounting to $19.5 million to EARTH students for 7 years. Approximately one-third of the scholars will come from Sub-Saharan Africa and the rest from Latin America and the Caribbean.

The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program targets talented but financially disadvantaged secondary and prospective undergraduate students from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean who are committed to giving back to their community in Africa.

Selection Criteria

Recipients of The MasterCard Foundation scholarships meet all of EARTH’s selection criteria. As part of the partnership agreement, the university seek to award these scholarships to qualified candidates whose financial circumstances would otherwise prevent them from attending university.

Number of Scholarships:

A total of 120 scholarships will be awarded within 7 years

Recipients will receive their full education at no cost; Full tuition and other expenses. Other benefits will include:

How to Apply MasterCard Foundation Scholarships at EARTH University for Africa, Latin America & Caribbean

The first step to receiving a scholarship from this program is to apply to EARTH by May 25 for students in Africa, and by June 1 date for students in Latin America and the Caribbean. EARTH does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, ethnic origin, religion, gender or nationality in its education and admissions policy.

EARTH is currently accepting applications for the 2013 entering class.
