Marshal Papworth Agricultural & Horticultural Scholarships for Students from Developing countries

The Marshal Papworth Scholarships Programme at Reading is a merit and experience-based award, given to talented individuals who demonstrate that they have the potential, at the end of their Master’s programme, to motivate people and communities in their home country towards positive change. The Scholarships are offered in collaboration with the Wallace and Muriel Hurst Fund.

Applications must meet the Eligibility Criteria outlined below. Candidates who fully meet the criteria will then be shortlisted against three main factors: academic excellence, professional experience (includes experience gained in a voluntary capacity), and the potential for contribution to development in their home country after completion of their degree programme. Shortlisted applicants will then be reviewed by a selection panel chaired by the Director of GIIDAE.

All applicants holding an offer of admission with GIIDAE on one of the eligible programs will be sent an application form. If you want to apply for this Scholarship, you must hold an offer of admission prior to the Scholarship application deadline. Please submit your application for admission well in advance in order to ensure that your application has been processed prior to the Scholarship deadline.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Candidates must have demonstrable work or voluntary experience working in community development and/or agricultural development.

2. Candidates must have a 2:1 or 1^st class degree at the undergraduate level (we use NARIC to assess degree equivalency).

3. The awards enable Scholars to study on any one of the following one-year postgraduate Master’s courses offered by the Graduate Institute of International Development and Applied Economics (GIIDAE) at the University of Reading:

Agriculture and Development
Applied International Development
Climate Change and Development
Communication for Development
Environment and Development
Food Security and Development

At least one scholarship will be awarded to the MSc Agriculture and Development. The remaining scholarships will be awarded to applicants across a range of the remaining degree programmes.

4. The candidate should usually be from one of the countries listed in Appendix 2 and be domiciled in that country at the time of their application. These have been derived based on countries with a GNI per capita below $11500 USD, and be residing in that country at the time of application.

5. Candidates must demonstrate that they have achieved the English language requirements stipulated by the University of Reading – www.reading.ac.uk/ad-Englishtests.aspx

6. Those who have already pursued study at the Master’s level will not normally be considered unless this forms part of the entry level criteria.

7. Candidates should normally have an unconditional offer from the University of Reading by the time they apply for the scholarship. If their offer is conditional, it will be considered, but all conditions must be successfully met immediately upon request by GIIDAE.

8. Receipt of an application form in and of itself DOES NOT mean that the candidate is eligible to apply; you must meet all of the eligibility criteria listed above.

9. The deadline for applications 21^st February 2019, 4:00 PM GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). All applications received after this date will be disqualified.

Marshal Papworth provide opportunities for students from developing countries to gain the agricultural and horticultural skills needed to achieve a sustainable future for themselves and their communities through two scholarship programmes:
• Masters programme – A one year’s Masters Degree in agriculture or horticulture at a UK-based university
• Marshal Papworth 10-week short course – A 10-week practical and experiential course to empower change makers in rural communities.

The Masters programme

Marshal Papworth fund scholarships for one-year postgraduate courses for students from developing countries for UK-based MSc and MA courses. As an agricultural charity Marshal Papworth favour land-based postgraduate courses, including Sustainable Development, Waste Management and International Horticulture. However, Marshal Papworth also consider more general courses such as Project Management and Economic Development. Marshal Papworth 10-week short course
This course has been designed specifically for students who can demonstrate a strong hands-on commitment to their community and its agricultural development. Potential candidates for this course include innovative farmers, community project leaders or primary school teachers with a keen interest in local agriculture, who are motivated in becoming change makers within their communities.

How to Apply:

You cannot apply directly to the Marshal Papworth Fund for our Masters programme. Applications should be made as follows:

• Prospective scholarship students should contact one of our chosen universities/colleges (link to the Universities page) directly and apply for a suitable course
• Students who apply must have a good command of the English Language as they will be required to sit an English test. English language is a requirement for all university/college admissions and English language is a requirement stipulated by UKBA for all international students
• Students who pass this test then need to go through the applications procedure of the university/college for their chosen course
• Once accepted onto a course the university/college will select candidates they believe are eligible for a Marshal Papworth Scholarship and will forward the students application and CV onto the Marshal Papworth Fund directly for consideration
• Students who will be considered for a Marshal Papworth scholarship will not have received any other form of scholarship funding prior to this application
• Suitable students must also demonstrate a clear desire for their country and fellow countrymen to benefit from their learning as a result of their completed course
• Applications for scholarships must be received from partnering universities/colleges no later than the end of the second week of April, or the last day before the Easter break, whichever is the former. This is to ensure that the students who are awarded a scholarship have ample time to arrange Visas and travel arrangements before the start of their course in the autumn
• Copies of the Admission Application/Copy of Certificates/Copy of Transcripts/Copy of References/Completed Marshal Papworth Student Application Form and CVs will be forwarded to the Marshal Papworth Fund Committee for perusal and comments soon after the closing date as highlighted above
• Applications and CVs will be considered by the Marshal Papworth Fund Committee and communication of awarded scholarships will be directly to successful students from the university/college for which they applied.

Marshal Papworth 10-week Short Course.

The Marshal Papworth Fund is currently working with a number of organisations in country who are responsible for the selection of candidates for the Marshal Papworth 10-week Short Course.

The 10-week course at Shuttleworth College starts in May with students arriving in the UK during the week the course begins.
