Many Languages One World® Student Essay Contest & 2017 Global Youth Forum (Fully Funded to USA)

ELS and the United Nations Academic Impact are pleased to sponsor the fourth Many Languages, One World® Student Essay Contest and Global Youth Forum. This year welcomes Northeastern University as the host of the Many Languages, One World Global Youth Forum and the sponsor and organizer of the Northeastern University Global Youth Conference.

Sixty winners will be selected as delegates to the 2017 Many Languages, One World Global Youth Forum, where they will create action plans related to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Requirements:

  • To qualify, essays must be written in an official language of the United Nations that is neither your first language (language(s) spoken at home) nor the medium of instruction in either your primary or secondary education (or a medium of instruction if attending a bilingual school).
  • You will need to demonstrate both written and verbal competency in the language of the essay.
  • You must be a full-time university student, referred and endorsed by a faculty member or university representative, and must be 18 years of age or older by the contest deadline.

Benefits:

  • ELS Educational Services, Inc. will award each winner with an all-expense paid trip to Boston and New York City between 15-26, July 2017.
  • At the Global Youth Forum, the students will create action plans addressing selected topics from the Sustainable Development Agenda, and will present their views at United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
  • These international delegates will also have the opportunity to interact with invited international scholars and tour Boston and New York City.
  • Airfare, accommodations and meals will be provided by ELS Educational Services, Inc.

To Participate:
Write an original essay (2,000 words or less) discussing global citizenship and cultural understanding, and the role that multilingual ability can play in fostering these.  The essay should reflect your personal, academic, cultural and national context.

2016 United Nations Academic Impact Global Youth Forum & Student Essay Contest (All Expense Paid to speak at the United Nations)

Share your ideas and be heard… perhaps even in the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations!

The purpose of the Many Languages, One World Student Essay Contest and Global Youth Forum is to promote global citizenship and cultural understanding through multilingualism and the continued study of the six official languages of the United Nations – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
Organized by ELS Educational Services, Inc., and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), this event was created to bring global-minded young scholars from all over the world together to engage in dialogue about global issues and initiatives that could be carried back to their universities and institutions.
Benefits
  • 60 Students will be selected as delegates to the 2016 United Nations Academic Impact Global Youth Forum, 25-31 July, 2016, where they will create action plans related to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
  • The students will present these action plans at United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

Contest Rule:

  • The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), in collaboration with ELS Educational Services, Inc., (ELS) invites students, 18 years and older, who are enrolled in a full-time course of study at a college or university, to participate in the Many Languages, One World Essay Contest

2015 United Nations Academic Impact Global Youth Forum & Student Essay Contest (Win an all expense paid trip to New York,USA)

The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), in collaboration with ELS Educational Services, Inc., (ELS) invites students, 18 years and older, who are enrolled in a full-time course of study at a college or university, to participate in an essay contest through the Many Languages, One World programme.

Essay
Write an essay (2,000 words or less) related to the post-2015 global development agenda, in the context of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, and the definition of new goals reflecting the imperative of global sustainable development that recognises, and is enriched by, cultural and linguistic diversity. You are encouraged to visit the website sustainabledevelopment.un.org for background material in this regard.

Requirements:

  • Entries must be in an official language of the United Nations that is not your first language and was not your principal language of instruction during your primary or secondary education.
  • To enter, you must be a full-time university student and must be 18 years of age or older by March 25, 2015.
  • Your participation must be sponsored by a Faculty Member or Authorized Representative at the university you are currently attending.

 

Benefits

  • 70 Students will be selected as delegates to the 2015 United Nations Academic Impact Global Youth Forum where they will create plans of action related to the United Nations Post-2015 Global Development Agenda.
  • The students will present these plans of action at United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
  • Airfare, Room and Meals will be provided by ELS Educational Services, Inc.To participate: 
  • These Winners will be invited to New York to participate in a series of events during
    the week of July 20-26, 2015. MANY LANGUAGES ONE WORLD United Nations Academic Impact Student Essay Contest

The United Nations Academic Impact and ELS Educational Services are organizing an international essay-writing contest for college and university students on the role of multilingualism in a globalized world.  A requirement for all participants is that their essay be in an official United Nations language which is not their mother tongue or medium of educational instruction.

Under the overall theme of “Many languages — One world”, students are being asked to write an essay in which they are to discuss and debate the value of multilingualism in the broader context of global citizenship — one of the core principles of the United Nations Academic Impact.

The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), in collaboration with ELS Educational Services, Inc., (ELS) invites students, 18 years and older, who are enrolled in a course of study at a college or university, to participate in an essay contest on the theme “Many Languages, One World.”

The essay should relate to ideas of global citizenship and understanding and to the role that linguistic abilities and felicity can play in fostering these. Entries, of up to 2000 words in length should be in an official language of the United Nations that is not the mother tongue of the entrant or the principal medium of instruction in his or her education. The official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Eligibility

The contest is open to students 18 years and older enrolled in a college or university anywhere in the world.  Each submission must be accompanied by a certification from a competent institutional authority attesting that the conditions of the contest have been met and that the entry is the original, unaided work of the participant.  Only one submission per student will be accepted.

 

Requirements

  • The essays will have to be written in one of the six official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish), but can not be the student’s mother tongue and/or principal medium of instruction.
  • Essays must be under 2000 words, excluding citations and bibliography, if any.
  • Essays must present, in a clear and concise form, arguments for — or against — the importance of multilingualism.  In today’s globalized world, there is growing emphasis on learning multiple languages.  The United Nations, as the world’s premier universal organization, promotes the use of six official languages, and issues all official documents simultaneously in these.  Students should examine why the emphasis on linguistic diversity contributes — or does not — to creating a more harmonious world.
  • Students are encouraged to research the topic using web and non-web materials.  When quoting directly, original sources must be cited.

Application Procedure:

  • Entries should be uploaded to the website ManyLanguagesOneWorld.ELS.edu by 21 February 2014.
  • An institutional representative will have to attest that the entrant is a student of the institution, in good standing, and that the essay is written in a language that is not the institution’s primary language of instruction and is the original, unaided work of the entrant.

Judging

  • A panel of judges will decide upon a total of sixty student winners of the competition—ten in each of the six languages.

Prize

  • The winners will be invited to New York in 2014 to participate in a series of events between June 25 and June 29, 2014.
  • These events will include a youth forum on the 10 principles of the United Nations Academic Impact, multilingualism and global citizenship at United Nations Headquarters, preceded by a preparatory students’ conference at Adelphi University on Long Island, New York. Programmes of touristic sightseeing and recreation will also be arranged by ELS Educational Services.
  • ELS will pay for roundtrip economy class fares in carriers of its choosing between the entrants’ home city and New York, and be responsible for the entrants’ travel, room and meals from their arrival on June 25th until their departure on June 29th, 2014.
  • Entrants are responsible for all documentation relating to their journey, including passports and visas and the costs related to these, as well as appropriate medical insurance for their journey and stay in the United States.
  • All winners will be given certificates of participation by ELS, signifying they have won the Student Essay Contest arranged in cooperation with the United Nations Academic Impact.
