YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship 2017 for Young African Leaders (Fully Funded to the USA)

From June 16-30, 2017, the Mandela Washington Fellowship will host up to 1,000 young African leaders. Fellows will travel to US university and college campuses for six-week Academic and Leadership Institutes in one of three tracks: Business and Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership, or Public Management. It is anticipated that one Public Management Institute will focus on Energy Policy, in collaboration with Power Africa. Applicants for the Energy Institute need not be currently working in government or in another public management role to apply to this Institute.

The Institutes will culminate in a Summit in Washington, DC from July 31 – August 2, 2017. Additionally, up to 100 Fellows will take part in a six-week, US-based Professional Development Experience with US organizations from August 3 – September 15, 2017. The US Government and its partners have also created unique follow-on opportunities for Fellows to put their new skills to practical use in leading organizations and communities after they return to their home countries.

The 2017 YALI Fellowship will train 1,000 young African leaders across three tracks, which include business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership and public management. The 2017 Mandela Washington Fellowship is a six-weeks in-depth academic and leadership training at 20 top American universities.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, begun in 2014, is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) that empowers young people through academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. The Fellowship provides 1,000 outstanding young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to hone their skills at a U.S. higher education institution with support for professional development after they return home.

In the summer of 2017, the Mandela Washington Fellowship will bring 1,000 young African leaders to the United States for academic coursework and leadership training and will create unique opportunities in Africa for Fellows to put new skills to practical use in leading organizations, communities, and countries.

Eligibility Requirements:

Eligibility

Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, socio-economic status, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. The Mandela Washington Fellowship is open to young African leaders who meet the following criteria:

  • Are between the ages of 25 and 35 at the time of application submission, although exceptional applicants younger than 25 will be considered;
  • Are not US citizens or permanent residents of the United States;
  • Are eligible to receive a United States J-1 visa;
  • Are not employees or immediate family members of employees of the US government (including the US Embassy, USAID, and other US government entities);
  • Are proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English;
  • Are citizens of one of the following countries: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Republic of the Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
  • Are residents of one of the above countries; and
  • Are not alumni of the Mandela Washington Fellowship.
  • Please note: Fellows are not allowed to have dependents (including spouses and children) accompany them during the Fellowship.

Selection Criteria:

Selection panels will use the following criteria to evaluate applications (not in order of importance):

  • A proven record of leadership and accomplishment in public service, business and entrepreneurship, or civic engagement.
  • A demonstrated commitment to public or community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
  • The ability to work cooperatively in diverse groups and respect the opinions of others.
  • Strong social and communication skills.
  • An energetic, positive attitude.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, interest and professional experience in the sector/track selected.
  • A commitment to return to Africa and apply leadership skills and training to benefit the applicant’s country and/or community after they return home.

Benefits

  • There is no fee to apply to the Mandela Washington Fellowship. If you are selected for
    the Fellowship, the U.S. government will cover all participant costs.
  • Financial provisions provided by the U.S. Government will include:
    • J-­‐1 visa support;
  • Round-­‐trip travel from Fellow’s home city to the U.S. and domestic U.S. travel as
    required by the program;
    • A six-­‐week academic and leadership institute;
    • Concluding Summit in Washington, DC;
    • Accident and sickness benefit plan;
    • Housing and meals during the program; and
  • • An optional six-­‐week Professional Development Experience (for up to 100 Fellows).
    • Please note: the Fellowship will not cover salary while Fellows are away from work or
    funds for personal purchases such as gifts

Timeline:

  • Mandela Washington Fellowship Application Period: September 21st – October 26 2016
  • Interviews at Embassies: January – February 2017
  • Applicants are notified of their status – Mid-March 2017
  • Academic and Leadership Institutes & Summit (Optional Professional Development Experiences end September 15 – June 15  – August 3rd 2017

Selection Process

  • The Mandela Washington Fellowship is conducted as a merit-based open competition. After the deadline, all eligible applications will be reviewed by a selection panel.
  • Chosen semifinalists will be interviewed by the U.S. embassies or consulates in their home countries.
  • If selected for an interview, applicants must provide a copy of their passport (if available) or other government-issued photo identification to verify eligibility.

Applications for the 2015 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders will open on October 7, 2014. The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). President Obama launched YALI in 2010 to support young African leaders as they spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, which began in 2014, will bring 500 young leaders to the United States in 2015 for academic coursework and leadership training and will create unique opportunities in Africa for Fellows to put new skills to practical use in leading organizations, communities, and countries.

Eligibility Criteria

Competition for the Washington Fellowship  is merit-based and open to young African leaders who meet the following criteria:

  • Are between the ages of 25 and 35 at the time of application submission, although exceptional  applicants younger than 25 will be considered;
  • Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S;
  • Are eligible to receive a United States J-1 visa;
  • Are proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English; and

FINANCIAL PROVISIONS OF THE FELLOWSHIP
There is no fee to apply to the Washington Fellowship. If you are selected, the U.S. government will cover all participant costs.

Financial provisions provided by the U.S. Government will include:

  •  J-1 visa support;
  • Round-trip travel from fellow’s home city to the U.S. and other required travel;
  • Customized academic and leadership institute;
  • Concluding Presidential Summit in Washington, DC;
  • Accident and sickness benefit plan;
  • Housing and meals; and
  • A potential eight-week internship at the conclusion of the academic and leadership institute (optional, and competitive for approximately 100 slots).

The Washington Fellowship includes:

  • A 6-week Academic and Leadership Institute: Fellows are placed at U.S. colleges and universities for  academic institutes. Institutes will focus on skills development in one of three areas: Business and  Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership, or Public Management. Institutes will take place from mid-June  to late July 2014.
  • A Summit with President Obama in Washington, DC: At the conclusion of the academic and  leadership institute, all Fellows will participate in a Presidential Summit. The Summit will take place  in late July 2014.
  • An optional 8-week U.S. Internship: As part of the Fellowship application, individuals may apply to receive practical training at a U.S. business, civil society organization, or public agency in the United  States. Approximately 100 Washington Fellows will be selected for U.S.-based internships. The U.S.  internships will take place in August and September 2014.
  • Activities in Africa: Fellows will have the opportunity for continued networking opportunities,  ongoing professional development, access to seed funding, and community service activities upon  their return home after the Fellowship.

Applying to Be a Mandela Washington Fellow : Building Your Resume.

A successful candidate for the Mandela Washington Fellowship demonstrates an ability to get things done. Take a marketing approach to your resume that will command the ultimate amount of attention. Think about how you want the person who reads your resume to think of you.

In preparing your resume, remember three important tips:

  1. Keep your answers brief.
  2. Write in the third person (do not use the pronoun “I”).
  3. Proofread your resume for grammatical and spelling mistakes.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare the information you will need for the required format of the Mandela Washington Fellowship resume:

  • Professional Experience: What professional experiences have you had? Make a list of paid or volunteer positions and summarize your work in these positions to give an instant picture of the breadth of your work or volunteer background.
  • Education: Have you received any type of formal education beyond secondary school? If so, make a list of the education and training you received from established universities, colleges or trade schools. Include the dates you attended these schools, what you studied, and what degrees or certificates you earned.
  • Professional Training: Did you receive professional training outside of an established educational institution? Name up to five relevant professional certifications and/or training courses you completed, including the type of training or the name of the certification and the city and country where the training occurred.
  • Community and Volunteer Work: In addition to your professional experience, do you perform unpaid work in your community? Make a list of your volunteer activities with local charities or NGOs and summarize your work with these organizations.
  • Honors and Awards: Have you been recognized for your efforts in something that you have done? List what honors or awards you have received, from which organizations, and for what type of work.
  • Professional Skills: Think about the skills you have acquired over time. What languages do you speak? Are you proficient in computer and software skills?

On July 28, 2014, in front of 500 exceptional young leaders, President Obama announced the renaming of the Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders in honor of Nelson Mandela. He also announced that the United States intends to double the number of annual participants in the Mandela Washington Fellowship to 1000 by the summer of 2016.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of the President’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) and embodies President Obama’s commitment to invest in the future of Africa.

2014 Mandela Washington Fellowship

The first class of Mandela Washington Fellows arrived in June 2014 for six weeks of intensive executive leadership training, networking, and skills building, followed by a Presidential Summit in Washington, DC.  Through this initiative, young African leaders are gaining the skills and connections they need to accelerate their own career trajectories and contribute more robustly to strengthening democratic institutions, spurring economic growth, and enhancing peace and security in Africa.

 

The 2014 Class of the Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders.

  • Selected from nearly 50,000 applications, the 500 Mandela Washington Fellows represent the extraordinary promise of an emerging generation of entrepreneurs, activists, and public officials.
  • Mandela Washington Fellows are between 25 and 35 years old; have proven track records of leadership in a public, private, or civic organization; and demonstrate a strong commitment to contributing their skills and talents to building and serving their communities.
  • The first class of Fellows represents all 49 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and includes equal numbers of men and women.
  • Despite their youth, more than 75 percent of Fellows already hold a mid-level or executive position, and 48 percent have a graduate degree.
  •  Twenty-five percent of Fellows currently work in a non-governmental institution and 39 percent of them operate their own business.
  • Nearly all Fellows are the first in their families to visit the United States.
