LEAP Africa’s Social Innovators Programme and Awards (SIPA) is a yearly immersive fellowship that empowers and equips 20 young African changemakers with requisite skills and tools for building sustainable enterprises.  We are currently accepting applications for our 2019/2020 cohort.

The SIP accepts 20 social innovators annually for a period of 12 months; from November 2019 to November 2020

Requirements

The fellowship admits social ventures/ enterprises with a for profit/ non profit model. The fellowship’s focus is to support Fellows to build sustainable social ventures and enterprises.

  • Young persons between the ages of 18-35 years, whose ideas and initiatives offer effective solutions to challenges in local communities across Nigeria.
  • Initiators/co-founders of a social-focused venture/enterprise/ Foundation, located in Nigeria. 
  • Applicants must have been involved in operating their venture/enterprise beyond one to three years prior to the commencement of the Fellowship

Initiator/ co- founder must be available for the full course of the 12 month period to implement the learnings into sustaining their innovation/ enterprise

During the course of the Fellowship, Fellows will be exposed to: 

  • 6 day residential sustainability training/ workshop
  • Mentoring by seasoned professionals
  • Webinars, online learning and advisory support
  • Alumni meet-ups and networking access to global opportunities and fellowships

Benefits

The SIP is LEAP’s  platform to equips, supports and showcases social innovators and entrepreneurs, enabling them build and sustain their social innovations towards national and systems level social change. Therefore, being a member of this prestigious Fellowship, affords you:

  • The opportunity to  be equipped with leadership, management and entrepreneurial skills for personal, organisational and community transformation
  • The opportunity to build valuable global networks within the social innovation and enterprise space
  • Access to a support ecosystem of talent, advisory, funding and other resources that will support the growth and sustainability of your innovation

At the end of the programme, sustainability prizes will be awarded to three outstanding Fellows. However, throughout the course of the fellowship, there are opportunities for Fellows to access funding from our other development partners.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted with a congratulatory message from the SIP team. They will be invited to attend the Social Innovators Programme & Awards in November 2019 in Lagos where they will be onboarded and inducted into the Fellowship.

LEAP Africa’s Social Innovators Programme and Awards (SIPA) 2018/2019 for young Nigerian Social Entrepreneurs.

The Social Innovators Programme & Awards (SIPA) is LEAP Africa’s platform for showcasing, empowering and equipping young change makers with requisite skills and effective tools for building sustainable enterprises. Over the past four(4) years, LEAP Africa with the support of Union Bank Nigeria and other corporate sponsors, have enabled these young change makers transition their social change ideas into scalable social enterprises.

During a programme cycle, 20 social entrepreneurs selected from a pool of applicants, participate in activities outlined for the fellowship year. The initiatives of Fellows cover various aspects of the society, such as Agriculture, Youth Empowerment, Education, Science & Technology, Health, Law, Human Rights, among others. Fellows are empowered through series of training sessions (physical and online), mentorship, provision of local & international funding and partnership opportunities. These activities culminate into an award ceremony where outstanding Fellows are rewarded with seed grants and showcased.

Requirements:

LEAP Africa is seeking applications from budding social entrepreneurs who would be available and willing to participate in the various activities outlined for the fellowship year.

The 2018/2019 fellowship cycle begins in November 2018 and ends November 2019.

An ideal SIP fellow should be:

  • Youth between the ages of 18-35 years, whose ideas and initiatives offer effective solutions to challenges in local communities across Nigeria.
  • Initiators/co-founders of a social-focused project/venture/enterprise/ Foundation,
    located in Nigeria.
  • Applicants who have been involved in operating their project/enterprise beyond 12 months prior to the commencement of the Fellowship.

Benefits:

LEAP will support successful applicants scale their social enterprise through:

  • Provision of local and international opportunities: we support fellows with opportunities to get access to grants, trainings, workshops, organized by our partners both locally and internationally. Fellows have been able to access grants from international grant-giving organizations through their participation in the SIPA.
  • Publicity for Fellows: During the course of the fellowship year, LEAP leverages its various online media platforms to showcase the innovative work done by fellows to the online community.
  • Creating local partnerships for Fellows: LEAP provides the opportunity and recommendations for fellows to partner with organizations who will support with project implementation and support services.

Selection Criteria:

  • Level of creativity/innovation applied in their entrepreneurial approach towards social change.
  • Experience mobilizing people and resources to achieve set goals.
  • Motivation for application: Applicants must give compelling reasons why they would like to participate in the fellowship programme and also show a strong desire to increase the impact of their change initiative.
  •  Demonstrate a passion for social change and active participation in community building.

Application Documents

 Applicants should complete and submit the online application form. Shortlisted applicant will be required to provide the following to make the final list:
i) Valid Government issued identification.
ii) Evidence (photographs, videos, fliers, publications etc.) of past project
implemented by the organization.

LEAP Africa and Union Bank has partnered to develop the SIP 2017 to strengthen and advance youth-led change initiatives and entrepreneurship in Nigeria through training and collaborative partnerships that enhance the sustainability and overall impact of these change initiatives.

LEAP’s Social Innovators Programme (SIP) supports creative young Nigerians (Ages 18 – 35) with ideas and initiatives that proffer effective solutions to identified challenges in local communities across the country. These social innovators are highly innovative young Nigerians who are championing social enterprises and improving the lives of community members across Nigeria. Their initiatives range from inventing of safe water recycling machines, Use of ICT to curb maternal mortality, Innovative use of technology to improve food storage for rural farmers and rural economic empowerment through waste recycling among others.

The Social Innovators Programme (SIP) is a one-year fellowship which supports talented young social innovators – youth change-makers – whose ideas and initiatives offer effective and creative solutions to the challenges in local communities across Nigeria. Their initiatives cover many aspects of society, such as Agriculture, Business and Economic Development, Education, Science and Technology, Health, Law and Human Rights, among others.

During the fellowship period, selected young leaders are equipped with the personal and organizational leadership skills, networking support, and advocacy needed to strengthen and expand the reach and depth of their projects within their target communities. These fellows also join IYF’s global YouthActionNet® community of over 1,100 young social innovators being supported by 21 national and regional institutes like the Social Innovators Programme (SIP).

Requirements:

  • Youth between 18 and 35 years, whose ideas and initiatives offer effective solutions to challenges in local communities across Nigeria.
  • Applicants must be Initiators/ Co-founders of the named project/venture/enterprise/ Foundation.
  • Social enterprise must be contributing positively to the lives of people in their local communities.
  • Social enterprise must be located in Nigeria.
  • Applicants must be able to show proof of work done and impact beyond 12 months prior to application.

What initiative must apply ?

  1. Initiatives cuts across all sectors of the economy, Technology, Agriculture, Environment e.t.c .
  2. Submitted ideas/business solutions must solve major social challenges in Nigeria.
