Korean Government Scholarship Program 2022 for Undergraduate study in South Korea (Fully Funded)

Global Korea Scholarship is designed to provide international students with opportunities to study at higher educational institutions in Korea in pursuit of academic degrees, which will enhance international education exchange and deepen mutual friendship between Korea and participating countries.

※ As Korean Government Scholarship Programs have been integrated and branded as Global Korea Scholarship
in 2010, the name has been changed to GKS (Global Korea Scholarship).

Korean government invites 125 international students from 67 countries who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Korea. To be selected as a GKS grantee, any applicant should successfully pass through the 1st selection process set by the Korean Embassy of his or her country of origin.

[University Track]
Korean government invites 60 international students from 72 countries who wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree (Natural Science and Engineering department) also 35 international students from 17 countries who wish to pursue an associate degree in Korea. To be selected as a GKS grantee, any applicant should successfully pass through the 1st selection process set by the designated regional universities.

Please contact the first round of selection organizations(embassy or university) to get detailed information regarding the application submission such as application deadline, required documents, interview and etc. Application submission deadline may differ by each embassy or university that conducts the first round of selection.

ELIGIBILITY
○ Nationality

  • All applicants must hold citizenship of NIIED designated countries that are invited to take part in the GKS program.
  • All applicants and their parents must NOT hold Korean citizenship. If an applicant or his/her parent(s) hold dual citizenship (one who have Korean citizenship and citizenship of another country), he/she is NOT eligible to apply.
    ※ Applicants and their parent(s) may hold different citizenship. Applicant‟s parent(s) may hold a citizenship of non GKS participating countries.
    ※ Applicants and their parents who had previously held Korean citizenship must submit documentation that proves their renunciation of Korean citizenship.

Level of Education

  • Applicants who graduated (or are expected to graduate) from a high school can apply for a Bachelor‟s degree program or an Associate degree program.
  • Applicants who graduated (or are expected to graduate) from an associate degree program can only apply for a Bachelor‟s degree program.
    ※ Applicants who are expected to graduate by February 28th, 2022 must first submit a certificate of expected graduation. The official degree certificate (or diploma) and final academic transcript must be submitted to GKS Center, NIIED by February 28th, 2022 at the latest. If a scholar fails to submit their official degree certificate (or diploma) and final academic transcript by the deadline, his/her acceptance to the scholarship will be canceled. Any scholarship (e.g., airfare, settlement allowance) that was provided to the scholar will need to be returned.

Age

  • Must be under 25 years of age (born after March 1, 1997)

Available Fields of Study

  • Applicants must only apply to the universities/fields of study(departments) that are listed in the “University Information” file attached under the GKS Notice post in Study In Korea website※ www.studyinkorea.go.kr  (English/Korean version) Scholarships  GKS Notice
  • The Regional University Track applicants can only apply for departments that are listed under Natural Science, Technology and Engineering field.
  • Academic programs offered during evenings (night school), short-term programs, online and distant-learning programs are not applicable in this scholarship program.
  • Please be advised that even if a university‟s departments you intend to apply offer Englishtaught courses, it may be subject to change depending on the circumstances. Thus, we highly advise you to confirm with the university. Please keep in mind that Korean is the core language to be used in every Korean university.

  • Embassy track: Application start date and deadline will be decided at each embassy‟s discretion.
  • University track: Application start date and deadline will be decided at each university‟s discretion. However, the application for university track will be open until October 20th.

Korean Government Scholarship Program 2020 for study in South Korea (Fully Funded)

Application Deadline: Varying

In 2020, Korean Government’s Global Korea Scholarship program aims to invite 1,276 international students from 153 regions who wish to pursue a graduate level degree (master’s or doctoral) or research in Korea.

To be selected as a GKS (KGSP) grantee, an applicant must successfully pass the 1st round of selection managed by the Korean embassy where he or she holds the citizenship or NIIED-designated Korean universities.

Global Korea Scholarship is designed to provide international students with opportunities to study at higher educational institutions in Korea for graduate-level degrees, which will enhance international education exchange and deepen mutual friendship between Korea and participating countries.
※ As Korean Government Scholarship Programs have been integrated and branded as Global Korea Scholarship in 2010, the name is changed to GKS (Global Korea Scholarship).

Research Program: 10 Candidates
○ The Research Program candidates are selected from 155 countries that are invited to take part in 2020 Global Korea Scholarship for Graduate degrees. There is no reserved quota per country.
○ The Research Program applicants must receive invitation from universities prior to applying to this program.
○ The Research Program applicants submit their application either to the Korean embassy in the country where they hold the citizenship or to one of our partner universities listed in III. Available Universities and Fields of Study)

ELIGIBILITY

  1. Nationality
    ○ All applicants and their parents must not hold Korean citizenship.
    ○ Korean citizens and dual citizenship holders (one who have Korean citizenship and citizenship of another country) are NOT eligible to apply.
    ○ Applicants and their parents who had previously held Korean citizenship must submit the document that proves their renunciation of Korean citizenship.
    (※Exception: For overseas Korean applicants holding Japanese citizenship, if their parents hold “Permanent Residency Permit‟ within Japan while holding Korean citizenship, are eligible to apply.)
  2. Age
    ○ Must be under 40 years of age as of September 1, 2020 (born after September 1, 1980)
    ○ Academic professors who are under 45 years of age as of September 1, 2020 (born after September 1, 1975) and hold citizenship of one of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) recipients listed in the table below are eligible to apply.

○ Applicants must hold or must be expected to hold a Bachelor‟s, Master‟s or a Doctoral degree by August 31st, 2020.

  • Doctoral Program Applicants: Must hold a Master‟s degree or a level of education equivalent to a Master‟s degree

  • Research Program Applicants: Must hold a degree or a level of education equivalent to or higher than a Master‟s degree and must have received an invitation from one of NIIED‟s designated Korean universities.

  • Tuition amount covered by NIIED is maximum 5million KRW, and the amount that exceeds 5 million KRW will be covered by scholar‟s university.
  • University Admission fees are waived for GKS scholars.
    ○ Thesis (Dissertation) Printing Fee Reimbursement
  • The actual printing cost shown on the receipt will be reimbursed (receipt submission required)
  • Maximum reimbursable amount for each scholar: 500,000 KRW for Liberal Arts and Social Science majors, 800,000 KRW for Natural Science & Engineering and Arts, Music & Sports majors.
    ○ Medical Insurance: 20,000 KRW per month
    ○ Korean Proficiency Grants: 100,000 KRW per month
  • This special grant is given only to GKS scholars in the degree program who hold valid TOPIK level 5 or 6.
    ○ Degree Completion Grants: 100,000 KRW (offered once)
  • Offered to GKS scholars who return to their home countries after completing their degree coursework under the scholarship program.
  • NOT offered to GKS scholars who decide to remain in Korea after completing their degree coursework
    ※ Korean Proficiency Grants, Korean Language Training Fee, Degree Program Tuition, and Thesis (Dissertation) Printing Fee are ONLY given to degree-pursuing scholars.

Korean Government Scholarship Program are open to international students for pursuing undergraduate programme at higher educational institutions in Korea. The scholarship will contribute to promoting the international exchange in education and to deepening the mutual friendship among countries.

To provide international students with opportunities to conduct advanced studies in undergraduate & graduate programs at higher educational institutions in the Republic of Korea in order to promote international exchanges in education and mutual friendship between countries. Available Options in Universities Undergraduate course: 4-year courses at designated universities


※ Transferring between universities is not allowed. (e.g. Starting studies at the junior year is not allowed.)
Graduate course: Master’s or Ph.D. courses at general graduate schools of Korean universities Total Candidates to be Selected 170 persons (undergraduate course), 700 persons (graduate course) Korea Language Training Grantees are required to take Korean language training courses for 1 year at a language institution located on-campus of the domestic universities. Qualifications Both an applicant and his/her parents must be citizens of their country of origin.
※ Applicants should not hold Korean citizenship.

– Applicants should have adequate health, both mentally and physically, to stay in a foreign country for a long time.
– Should be under 25 years of age at the date of entrance. (Undergraduate)
– Should be under 40 years of age at the date of entrance. (Graduate)
– Have finished or be scheduled to finish formal education of all elementary, middle, high school courses by the date of arrival. (Undergraduate)

– Possess a grade point average (G.P.A.) above 80% from the last educational institution attended.
– Hold a Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree by the date of arrival. (Graduate)
※ Applicants who have previously acheived in any undergraduate program, master’s program, or doctoral program in Korea cannot apply for this program.

However, a former or current KGSP scholar who hold the overall grade of 90% or above can reapply to this program once either through the embassy or university track.

Procedure for the Scholarship Award NIIED invites the Korean Embassy in the invited country or a domestic university to recommend potential candidates.
Applicants should submit all documents related to their scholarship application to the Korean Embassy in their country of residence to or the domestic university concerned.
The Korean Embassy or the domestic university sends proper candidates to NIIED with the required documents.
NIIED evaluates potential candidates and notifies the Korean Embassy of the final selected KGSP grantees.

2013 Korean Government Scholarship Program

Purpose

To provide international students with an opportunity to conduct advanced studies at higher educational institutions in Korea,to develop global leaders and strengthen Korea-friendly networks worldwide.

Host

  • Korean Government and
  • The National Institute of International Education (NIIED)

Field of Study

Applicants must choose their desired fields of study from the listed programs offered by participating universities or institutes. Detailed information about the fields and majors offered by  Korean universities can be found  by visiting the Study in Korea Webpage.

Qualifications

Undergraduate Program

•  Airfare: A round-trip economy class ticket
•  Monthly Allowance: 800,000 won per month
•  Relocation (Settlement) Allowance: 200,000 won upon arrival
•  Repatriation Allowance: 100,000 won upon completion of studies
•  Language Training Fee : The full costs up to 1 year
•  Tuition: The tuition fee up to 5 million won is exempted by the Korean Government, and if any, the tuition fee exceeding 5 million won and the entrance fee for the first semester by the host university
•  Medical Insurance: The grantees will be provided with health insurance for major accidents and illnesses during their scholarship period.

Graduate Program

•  Airfare: A round-trip economy class ticket
•  Monthly Allowance: 900,000 won per month
•  Relocation (Settlement) Allowance: 200,000 won upon arrival
•  Language Training Fee : The full costs up to 1 year
•  Tuition: All admission fees are waived by the host institution. The full tuition is paid by NIIED.
•  Medical Insurance: 20,000 won per month(limited insurance coverage) will be provided to the university for students.
•  Research Allowance: 210,000 won for students in human and social sciences; 240,000 won for students in natural and mechanic sciences per semester
•  Dissertation Printing Costs: 500,000 ~ 800,000 won for the costs related to a printing dissertation

Special Allowance for ALL students proficient in Korean language (TOPIK level 5 or 6): 100,000 won per month

 

Eligibility:

Undergraduate Program

•  Must be a citizen of the country to which the scholarship is offered, which also applies to the applicants’ parents
•  Have graduated or will be scheduled to graduate from high school as of March 1st of the invitation year
•  Must possess above 80% (out of 100%) cumulative grade point average (CGPA), or must be within the top 20% (out of 100%) in rank in high school.

Graduate Program

• The applicant and his/her parents must hold foreign citizenships.  Applicants who hold Korean citizenship are not permitted to apply for this program.

•  Applicants must be under 40 years of age as of Sep. 1st, 2012 (born after Sep. 1st, 1972).

•  Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree as of September 1st of the selection year.  Applicants who have enrolled in or graduated from a university in Korea are not eligible for the KGSP program. Specifically, applicants who have previously enrolled in or graduated from an undergraduate program, a master’s program, or a doctoral program in Korea cannot apply for this program.

• Applicants must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.64 on a 4.0 scale, 2.80 on a 4.3 scale, 2.91 on a 4.5 scale, or grades/marks/score of 80% or higher from the previously attended institution. If the applicant does not satisfy the above GPA requirements, he/she will be ineligible to apply to this program.

Application instructions:

Applicants can only apply for the scholarships through the Korean Embassy in their home country or a participating Korean University. Visit  Korean Embassy/Consulate Webpage in your own country.

For Undergraduate Program, the Korean Embassy or Consulate will recommend qualified candidates to NIIED by 15 November 2012. Therefore, the application deadline should fall BEFORE this date – around September to November 2012.

For the Graduate Program, the Korean Embassy or Consulate will recommend qualified candidates to NIIED by 31 March 2013. Therefore, the application deadline should fall BEFORE this date – around January to March 2013.
