Increasingly African business and social leaders are emphasising that the future of the continent lies in its own hands. But, are we adequately reporting this and giving sufficient media attention to the strengthening entrepreneurial and innovative spirit? While analysing the challenges facing development, this intensive 3-day course explores the opportunities being seized by businesses and individuals in Africa, as well as the costs and benefits of foreign investment.

The workshop aims to equip journalists with the skills necessary to cover the economic and business trends. Led by seasoned Reuters’ journalists with deep experience, the course will show you how to make the link between money and people; and where to find new stories and sources.

Requirements:

Applicants must be African (East Africa and Southern Africa) full-time journalists or regular contributors to broadcast media organisations in Africa.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism in their country, must be a senior journalist with a minimum of three years’ professional experience and have a good level in spoken and written English.
If you have been on a Thomson Reuters Foundation training programme within the last two years you will not be eligible to apply.

Benefits:

Thomson Reuters Foundation can fund travel expenses and accommodation for participants travelling from outside Nairobi.

Agroforestry Workshop – Kenya
Role of small holder agroforestry systems in the arid and semi-arid region in combating climate change
Monday, 18th December 2017 to Thursday 21st December, 2017
Kisumu, Kenya

Applications are now been accepted from Early Career Researchers from the UK, Kenya and South Africa to apply to attend this workshop.

The programme, ‘British Council Researcher Links’ provides opportunities for early career researchers from the UK and internationally to interact, learn from each other and explore opportunities for building long-lasting research collaborations.

The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for sharing research expertise and networking. During the workshops, early career researchers will have the opportunity to present their research in the form of a poster/short oral presentation and discuss this with established researchers from the UK and partner countries. There will be a focus on building up links for future collaborations and participants selected on the basis of their research potential and ability to build longer term links.

Objectives

The main objective of the workshop is to develop a sustainable network of researchers across the three countries to underrated the socioeconomic and environmental benefits of the Agroforestry system in Arid and semi-arid region and evaluate of potential of satellite remote sensing for systematic monitoring of this ecosystem.

Specific objectives are:

1. To share experiences of successful agroforestry interventions within and around the Forest-Agriculture Interfaces (AFI) and Arid And Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) ecosystem landscapes in relation to climate change (CC)

2. To discuss scientific tools (e.g. GIS, Remote Sensing & Satellite imagery analysis) and methods for carrying out, analysing & modelling CC evidence based process research

3. Explore the opportunities provided by the Sentinel satellites for routine monitoring of AFI

4. To understand the economic valuation of climate change mitigation & adaptation strategies using social, human and economic capital with a focus on AF.

5. To contribute to the global road map to reach climate finance targets e.g. the Green Bonds (GBs) Markets.

6. To discuss ways of enhancing environmental literacy with an aim to influence curriculum and policy changes in devolved systems of forest governance

7. To understand ways of developing a business case (s) for AF practices in different scenarios.

8. To define capacity building needs to enable countries act, addressing loss and damage associated with climate change.

9. Identify suitable funding mechanism (e.g. Global challenge Research Fund) and develop a framework for submitting research proposal to such funds. These will be achieved through a series of seminars and working group discussions during the workshop.

AFRINIC Fellowship Program 2017 to attend the AFRINIC-26 Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya (Fully Funded)

AFRINIC is offering fellowships for the AFRINIC-26 meeting to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 27 May to 2 June 2017.

The fellowship is reserved for individuals representing small organisations, universities, and media who are actively involved in Internet operations and development or ICT policies in their countries.

The fellow is expected to positively and actively contribute to IP address management awareness in the AFRINIC service region.

Requirements:

To qualify for the fellowship, you:

Must be a resident of an African nation
Don’t need to be an AFRINIC member
Are involved in the Internet community.
Are willing to report on how this fellowship has benefited you/your Organisation/country within an agreed time frame.

Upon selection, AFRINIC will notify the selected fellows directly and allow them seven (7) days to accept or reject the offer.

The fellowship includes:

Full assistance with round-trip airfare to the meeting venue
Hotel accommodation for the AFRINIC event from the day before the beginning to the last day of the event

World Press Photo Foundation Masterclass for Documentary Photographers in East Africa – Nairobi, Kenya (Fully Funded)

The World Press Photo Foundation invites documentary photographers in East Africa to apply to participate in the World Press Photo Masterclass East Africa.

The masterclass aims to support the most promising young visual journalists in their professional development and will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from 28 November to 2 December.

The Masterclass East Africa will bring together a selection of the most promising professional photographers from the region who want to develop their career. All photographers who have worked on visual stories about daily life, nature, politics and society are encouraged to apply. The masters will share their expertise and provide individual advice to all participants, and they will be chosen to meet the learning needs and wishes of the selected participants.

The masterclass curriculum is structured around photo essays based on a central theme that participants are required to work on in preparation for the masterclass. The masterclass week also includes lectures by and one-on-one time with all masters.

The Masterclass East Africa is the second in the World Press Photo Foundation’s series of satellite masterclasses, based on the formula of the annual Joop Swart Masterclass for the world’s most talented upcoming visual journalists.

Participation is free, and all travel and lodging expenses will be covered by World Press Photo.

Eligibility Requirements:
Professional photographers with experience working on documentary photo stories who:

are nationals or permanent residents of the following countries in East Africa: Burundi, Djibouti, Comores, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mayotte, Mozambique, Reunion, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe;
are under the age of 35;
have a good understanding of English.

Application and selection procedure

To apply, please send your portfolio, your biography and a short statement of motivation describing what the masterclass might mean to your professional development, to [email protected] before 25 September.
Large files (25MB<) can be sent via WeTransfer. If you do not already have a portfolio, please prepare a selection of your work that includes at least two photo stories/series.
You will receive a confirmation email once your application has been checked for completion.
An international, professional and independent committee will select a maximum of 12 participants based on the quality of work and motivation for participation. To ensure fairness, the selection will take place anonymously.
The selected participants will be notified by email on 3 October and publicly announced on 10 October.

Agriculture for Food Security 2030 (AgriFoSe2030) Training Programme 2017 for Young African Researchers – Nairobi,Kenya (Fully Funded)

The Agriculture for Food Security 2030 (AgriFoSe2030) Programme funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) will conduct a training course for African young researchers on effective research-to-policy communication for agricultural development.

The course is a collaboration between AgriFoSe2030 and The Gothenburg Center for Environment and Sustainability (GMV) at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology.

Course objectives
The objectives of the short training course are to:
1. Enhance understanding of the policy landscape, research policy linkages and different models for policy engagement and knowledge exchange;
2. Equip young researchers with hands-on tools and skills for effective research-to-policy communication;
3. Share experiences and lessons on best practices in communicating research outputs;
4. Strengthen national networks for policy influence in African agriculture.
Participants will be trained in mapping the policy landscape and stakeholders, different models and strategies for policy engagement, formulating a research-to-policy plan and policy briefs and presenting policy recommendations aimed at the desired target group.

Requirements
The applicants must
• Be university lecturers or post-doctoral researchers currently affiliated with a university in sub-Saharan Africa;
• Have recently completed his or her Ph.D. in a field of relevance, within five years of the course date (no earlier than Jan 2011);
• Have a good record of scientific publications in the areas of agriculture, agroforestry, forestry, environment or any other similar area;
• Have experience or strong interest in knowledge exchange and communicating research outputs to policymakers for impact.

Participation

The course is open to 30 young researchers working on agriculture and food security.
15 places will be available for the specialization in “Socio-economic dimensions” (Theme 1) and 15 places are allocated to the specialization in “Multifunctional landscapes” (Theme 2).
The course will be held from 22-28 January 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The course is free of charge. Travel, lodging and meals will be covered by the AgriFoSe2030 Programme.

1. CV incl. current affiliation, academic specialisation and publication list (max 10 pages)
2. maximum 1-page letter describing i) your motivation to attend the course, and
ii) how you intend to use the knowledge and tools from the course in your policy
outreach work
3. state your preference for specialisation for the second half of the course in the
headline of your e-mail: Theme 1 (Socio-economic dimensions) or Theme 2 (Multifunctional landscapes)
