Global Editors Network Data Journalism Awards 2018 for Data Journalists Worldwide.

Applications for the 2018 Global Editors Network Data Journalism Awards are now being accepted.

Started in 2012, the Data Journalism Awards competition is organised by the Global Editors Network, with support from the Google News Lab and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Over the past seven years, the Global Editors Network has organised the Data Journalism Awards competition to celebrate and credit outstanding work in the field of data-driven journalism worldwide.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The Data Journalism Awards competition celebrates outstanding work in the field of data journalism worldwide. It can be won by any media organisation, big or small.
  • The awards are given to examples of data-driven articles or investigations, data-driven applications and storytelling projects that use data visualisation, to cover topics relevant to the general public and aiming at having an impact on society.
  • Media companies, non-profit organisations and freelancers or individuals are all eligible for the Data Journalism Awards. Works produced by individuals or teams of staffers from media companies and non-profit organisations, as well as freelancers or individuals are all eligible for entry.
  • Works that are the result of a collaboration between organisations may also be submitted. Works produced by staffers or freelancers collaborating with government agencies, business or trade organisations with a stake (financial or of other nature) in the issue at hand are not eligible. In other words, the awards are not given to business data visualisations or projects produced for branding purposes.

Benefits

  • The prizes are worth $1,801 (US) each and will be awarded on 31 May 2018 at a special ceremony and gala dinner in Lisbon during the GEN Summit 2018.

2018 Poynter Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media – St. Petersburg, Florida, USA (Funded)

Now in its fourth year, the Leadership Academy for Women in Digital Media is returning to Poynter’s campus in St. Petersburg, Florida, the week of March 18-23, 2018.

This transformative program, open to 28 participants, focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to rise to the highest levels of digital media leadership. Sessions will cover how to develop effective management styles, handle difficult situations, manage burnout, master negotiation tactics and build collaborative teams.

As in past years, the program will be structured to encourage open, candid discussion and mentoring. Participants will walk away with strong leadership skills and a built-in support system of peers. All attendees will receive one-on-one coaching during and after the program, and create personal leadership strategies designed to take their careers to the next level.

Requirements:

  • Women working in the digital space with leadership responsibilities or demonstrated leadership potential.
  • Poynter will select a group of 28 women working in digital media that represent need and diversity across race, geography, technology platforms, organization size and skill sets. Because of the small size of the class, the selection committee will give preference to women leaders currently working in digital media who can demonstrate an aptitude and potential for leadership through current projects and references.

Costs 

  • Tuition for the academy is free, thanks to the generous support of the McClatchy Foundation as well as funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Newmark Philanthropies. Participants will cover their own travel and accommodation costs. However, a limited number of travel stipends are available and will be determined once the application process is completed.

Application Process

  • Application requirements include previous work history, an example of a digital project the applicant has worked on, a short bio, a reference letter, and a photo of yourself.
  • The application deadline is at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, Nov. 30.

Code for South Africa Data Journalism School 2016, South Africa

Code for South Africa is launching Africa’s first data journalism school in February 2016.

The three-month-long training programme will consist of a combination of theoretical and hands-on practical work. Participants will spend much of their time each day working in a data newsroom.

In addition to data and social media journalism training, the school will also be a centre for news innovation. Through the newsroom, we will experiment with different approaches to delivering content to audiences, with an emphasis on actionable news. Code for South Africa is actively involved in ongoing projects that promote innovation in the media space through the use of data-driven storytelling and the school will play an important role in achieving this.

Requirements:

  • Each intake will consist of up to eight junior to mid-level journalists.
  • They will have the opportunity to gain practical data journalism skill-sets that will equip them to deliver compelling data-driven multimedia stories.
  • The school will be run by a combination of experienced and award winning journalists, coders, data wranglers, analysts and content specialists.
  • Modules will also include specialist topic lectures by high impact guest lecturers from local and international newsrooms.

  • In order to promote data-driven storytelling in South Africa, the programme is heavily subsidised by our donors.

2015 Senior Knight International Journalism Fellowship for Journalists from Africa

The International Center for Journalists seeks outstanding applicants for a Knight International Journalism Fellowship opening in Africa specializing in health and development journalism. The Senior Knight Journalism Fellow will play a leading role in overseeing ICFJ’s African journalism initiative beginning in early 2015. The goal of the project is to catalyze news media to deliver ongoing, high-quality health and development news that engages audiences by harnessing digital tools.

ICFJ defines audience engagement as measurable instances where citizens:

  1. Consume and interact with news
  2. Contribute to and co-create news
  3. Amplify the news by sharing it online and offline
  4. Act on news, by responding to issues or events
  5. Explore issues or data reported in news, by accessing additional information or resources

The project will focus on Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania. The duration of the fellowship is one year, with the possibility of extension for up to two more years.

The Senior Knight Fellow will serve as the editorial project leader, helping with multimedia story production and multi-country reporting projects, and working to replicate successes from one country to another. The Fellow will work with a team that includes other Knight Fellows focused on digital innovation and audience engagement strategies, and oversee health journalism specialists to be based in each of the four countries. The Senior Knight Health Journalism Fellow, who may be from any country, will be based in Kenya, Nigeria or South Africa.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least 10 years experience in covering health and development (issues related to poverty and its alleviation)
  • Sub-Saharan Africa expertise
  • Strong digital media and audience engagement skills
  • Excellent leadership skills, including managing others
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in other languages spoken in the target countries is a plus

The Knight International Journalism Fellowships are designed to instill a culture of news innovation and experimentation worldwide. The goal is to seed new ideas and services that deepen coverage, expand news delivery and engage citizens in the editorial process.

The program is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Fellows build on past successes in the Knight program, which has a strong record of achieving impact. They work in countries where there is a good opportunity to create the news media of the future. With additional support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Knight Fellows are empowering journalists in sub-Saharan Africa to use the latest digital tools to tell compelling stories on health and development issues.
