The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is now accepting applications for its 2016/17 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship. One outstanding woman journalist will be selected in June 2016 to complete a seven-month program from August 29, 2016 until March 28, 2017.

The selected Fellow will complete research and coursework at MIT’s Center for International Studies and internships with media outlets including The Boston Globe and The New York Times. The flexible structure of the program will provide the Fellow with opportunities to pursue academic research and hone her reporting skills. Past Fellows have taken advantage of opportunities to publish work under their bylines through various media outlets.

Including Srinivasan, 11 journalists representing nine countries have been selected as Fellows since 2004. During the Fellowship and beyond, they have explored a wide range of under-reported issues including gender-based violence, indigenous rights, and religious intolerance.

Requirements:

The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship is open to women journalists worldwide whose work focuses on human rights and social justice issues.
Journalists working in print, broadcast and/or Internet-based media, including freelancers, are eligible to apply. Applicants must have a minimum of three years experience in journalism.
Non-native English speakers must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.

Benefits:

A fixed monthly stipend will be provided to cover housing, meals, and ground transportation during the fellowship. Round-trip economy airfare will be purchased from the fellow’s place of residence to Washington, D.C., and from Washington, D.C., to the fellowship city.
The fellow will receive health insurance during the program.
The fellowship does not include a salary. For fellows residing outside of the United States, the fellowship also covers the costs of applying for and obtaining a U.S. visa.
The fellow will be fully responsible for any additional incidental expenses and other costs.

The Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship gives academic and professional opportunities to women journalists who focus on covering human rights and social justice.

Now in its 11th year, the fellowship provides an academic and professional opportunity for women journalists who focus on human rights and social justice to advance their reporting skills. The fellowship was created in memory of The Boston Globe correspondent and IWMF Courage in Journalism Award winner Elizabeth Neuffer, who died while reporting in Iraq on May 9, 2003. In collaboration with Neuffer’s family and friends, the IWMF started this program to honor Neuffer’s legacy while advancing her work in the fields of human rights and social justice.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be affiliated or freelance women journalists with at least three years of professional experience in journalism working in print, broadcast, or digital media.
All nationalities are welcome to apply, but non-native English speakers must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate support from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in media outlets.

Fellowship Location:

The fellow will be based at the Center for International Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts as a research associate during the first several months of the fellowship. During this time, she may conduct an internship at The Boston Globe.
During the second portion of the fellowship, the fellow may conduct an internship at The New York Times while living in New York. However, each fellowship will be tailored to the recipient.
Working with the IWMF, the fellow will design a program that will enable her to pursue academic research while improving her ability to cover human rights and social justice issues.

Fellowship Timeline:

The seven-month program will begin in late August 2015 and conclude March 2016.
The program will include both an orientation session and wrap-up debriefing in Washington DC.
The fellow is expected to stay for the duration of the program.

* If English is not your native language or if you have not completed a higher education degree in English, you must have a native English speaker complete the English Assessment Form. Completed forms should be emailed to the IWMF by May 1, 2015
