Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme 2019/2020 for study in Ireland (Fully Funded)

The Fellowship Training Programme was Irish Aid’s first scholarship programme, begun in 1974. Since that time, it has brought suitably qualified candidates from developing countries to undertake Masters degrees at universities and colleges in Ireland, with further students supported for similar courses in their own region.

Awards are made in fields such as development studies, rural development, health care, education and law with the aim of supporting and enhancing the contribution recipients can make to Irish Aid’s partner organisations. Fellowship eligibility requirements aim to ensure close alignment with Irish Aid’s programmatic approach.

The scholarship award covers course fees, required flights, accommodation (for out of country study), monthly allowances, insurance and other incidental expenses. Eligible Masters programmes in Ireland commence in the period August to September each year and, depending on the course, scholarships will run for between 10 and 16 months.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must

be a citizen of one of Irish Aid’s partner countries (i.e. Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia), or of Cambodia, Kenya, Liberia, Palestine, Myanmar, Rwanda or Zimbabwe.
be resident in that country.
have achieved the necessary academic standard to be accepted onto a Master’s degree course in a higher education institution in Ireland or within their own region.
be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the development of their home country.
have identified relevant college courses in a higher education institution in Ireland or within their own region. For study in Ireland, you must select courses from the Irish Aid Directory of Eligible Postgraduate Courses
be applying to commence a new qualification and not be seeking funding for a course they have already commenced or which will begin before fellowship awards have been notified.
be able to take up the fellowship in the academic year 2019/2020.

For study in Ireland, applicants must also

be able to demonstrate skills in academic English by achieving an appropriate score on a recognised test (IELTS 6.5)
contact the Irish Embassy to confirm that the courses they have chosen from the Directory of Postgraduate Courses accord with the Embassy’s priorities in their country (see contact information below).

All applicants who apply to study in Ireland and are selected to go forward to second stage will be required to sit an IELTS exam, unless they are already in possession of an IELTS certificate that is less than 12 months old at the time of application which shows the applicant has achieved the necessary score for the course they intend to apply to. Early preparation for the IELTS exam is strongly advised, even for native English speakers.

Each year, the Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme brings suitably qualified candidates from developing countries to undertake postgraduate studies at colleges and universities in Ireland. Further students are supported for courses in their own region. Awards are made in fields such as development studies, rural development, health care, education and law.

Participating Countries

Eligibility

Awards under the Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme are targeted at nine participating countries with which Ireland has established development cooperation programmes: Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Palestine, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia. To be eligible, applicants must be citizens of one of these partner countries and be residing in that country.

In addition, applicants must be currently employed by an Irish Aid partner organisation and be nominated by that organisation to apply. Potential candidates must obtain leave from their employer to undertake the course and, on completion, are expected to return home, resume their employment and put their qualifications into practice.

Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme applicants must also:

have a minimum of three years relevant work experience
be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the development of their home country
have identified up to two relevant Postgraduate Diploma or Taught Masters courses in Ireland or within their own region
be able to take up the fellowship in the academic year for which it is offered
provide a letter from their employer granting study leave for the duration of the fellowship and guaranteeing that they will be able to return to an equivalent position in the organisation at the end of the fellowship period
apply using the correct application form and by the stated deadline

Irish Aid Fellowships are not available:

for Bachelor’s degrees, Masters by Research or PhDs
for a course on which the applicant has already enrolled or will enrol before awards are notified
for applicants who already hold a Masters qualification

Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme – Application Process

NOTE: Application for the Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme is by invitation, not open call. Irish Embassies and Missions begin inviting applications from partner organisations and Ministries in September of each year. Fellowship eligibility requirements aim to ensure close alignment with Irish Aid’s programmatic approach.

A guide to courses eligible for Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme awards is available to consult at the Embassy of Ireland in participating countries from September of each year. Embassies will also provide copies of the fellowship application form.
Once you have obtained the application form, you should read the accompanying notes carefully before completing any of the sections. You should also have identified the postgraduate programme you wish to undertake.
The deadline for submission of the form is 31st December but earlier submission to the Irish Embassy/Mission is advised.

The authorised person needs to sign, print their name and position and, if possible, affix an official stamp to all pages of each copy).

Please note that all applications for the Fellowship Training Programme should be submitted directly to the Irish Embassy/Mission, not to ICOS or Irish Aid.

The Irish Government hereby invites applications for the Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme for the 2014/2015 Academic Year. Each year, the Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme brings suitably qualified candidates from developing countries to undertake postgraduate studies at colleges and universities in Ireland. Further students are supported for courses in their own region. Awards are made in fields such as development studies, rural development, health care, education and law.

Awards under the Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme are targeted at nine participating countries with which Ireland has established development cooperation programmes:

The programme is one of the ways in which Irish Aid supports capacity development in its key partner countries in Africa and Asia. Study fellowships are awarded by Irish Aid with the aim of supporting and enhancing the contribution recipients can make to development efforts in their own countries.

Eligibility:

To be eligible, applicants must be citizens of one of these partner countries and be residing in that country.

Irish Aid Fellowship Training Programme applicants must also:

have a minimum of three years relevant work experience

When returning the form, you will be asked to provide a certified photocopy of several documents. (A certified photocopy is one which has been signed and stamped by an authorised person – such as a Justice of the Peace, a Notary Public, a lawyer or a solicitor, etc – as being true and correct. The authorised person needs to sign, print their name and position and, if possible, affix an official stamp to all pages of each copy).

Please note that all applications for the Fellowship Training Programme should be submitted directly to the Irish Embassy/Mission, not to ICOS or Irish Aid.

You are advised not to apply for a course before being notified of the status of your Fellowship application. However, if you have aleady applied for a course at the time of submitting your fellowship application, you should indicate this clearly on your form and include photocopies of all related correspondence.
