The primary objective of the Internship Program at the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) is to deepen the Bank’s efforts to advance development within its regional member countries (RMC) through capacity building activities.

The Program aims at providing candidates with the opportunity to acquire and develop the ability to work in an international environment, provide the Bank a pool of potential candidates in the future and enhance the visibility of the Bank and its development activities.

Selection Criteria

Including desirable skills, knowledge and experience

To be eligible for internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Students, aged between eighteen (18) to thirty (30) years, and currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s/Master’s level degree program or its equivalent in a recognized public or private institution of higher learning.
  • The candidate can apply for an internship within one (1) year of having obtained such a degree.
  • Provide a letter from their school confirming their enrollment or a copy of the above mentioned Degree.
  • Citizens of one of the Bank’s member countries.
  • Applicants must be fluent in at least one of the Banks’s two working languages (English or French).

The specific disciplines and professional areas that are aligned to the Ten-Year Strategy (TYS) and the gender strategy of the Bank are the following:

  • Economy: Development Research; Statistics;
  • Operations I: Procurement & Fiduciary Services, Fragile States;
  • Operations II: Agriculture & Agro-Industry; Human Development; Governance; Water & Sanitation, Natural Resource Management;
  • Operations III: Energy, Environment & Climate Change; Transport & ICT; Private Sector; Regional Integration and Trade;
  • Strategy & Operational Policies;
  • Results & Quality Assurance;

Duties and responsibilities

  • The fields of study from which interns are selected must be within the job families of the Bank, particularly Economics, Agriculture, Private Sector Development, Human Capital Development (Education and Health), Environment, Finance, Infrastructure Development, Human Resources Management, Information Technology, Communications, Law, Internal Audit, Budget, Governance or any other field of study that the Bank may deem relevant to its operations.
  • Special consideration shall be given to students who are working on projects that have a direct bearing on the mission of the Bank.
  • Internships shall be performed either at the Bank’s headquarters in Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) or in any one of the Bank’s field offices or Regional Centres.
  • The program is annually run for two sessions as follows:
    • Winter – Session I: January through March. (closed)
    • Summer – Session II: June through August.
  • Internships shall be granted to each candidate for a period not less than three (3) months and not more than six (6) months. The internship will be authorized only once for any candidate.
  • Interns shall be responsible for their air travel (where applicable) to and from the Bank’s location as well as their upkeep.
  • Interns shall be responsible for their medical insurance coverage and for obtaining entry and residence visas in the host country of the Bank.
  • Eligible Interns will be provided with a monthly stipend, depending on the budget availability.

2015 African Development Bank Young Professionals Program for Young Professional Africans

The African Development Bank Young Professionals Program (YPP) targets the best available talent in our niche – young professionals with a passion for development in Africa. This program is not an internship; rather it offers an exceptional opportunity to talented young professionals with leadership potential, an established record of outstanding academic and professional achievement, a commitment to engagement in crucial issues and to making a difference at the national or international level. The YPP includes a rigorous program of activities that prepares participants to be technical and professional leaders with notable impact.

  • The Program is for a period of three years, of which two years are mandatory and with the possibility of securing a regular staff position during the third year, based on satisfactory performance.
  • The rotation assignments are to gain experience of the Bank’s various departments and development programs and processes.
  • The training and development programs will include on-boarding, on the job learning and mentoring.
  • Performance will be continuously reviewed and evaluated.

The Young Professionals will be based at the African Development Bank Headquarters, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The Young Professional Program targets motivated and talented individuals from our member countries. Applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Citizen of a regional or non-regional member country of the African Development Bank.
  • 32 years of age or younger by 31st December, 2015.
  • A Master’s degree or equivalent or higher in Economics, Engineering, Social Sciences, International Development, Business Administration, Finance, or any discipline that is relevant to the business of the Bank as described above, and with outstanding academic credentials.
  • A least 3 years relevant work experience, preferably with a multi-disciplinary background.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills; dynamism; results-orientation; and problem-solving capability.
  • Demonstrated passion for development issues and a commitment to Africa.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and/or French, preferably with a working knowledge of the other language.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft operating systems (PowerPoint, Excel, and Visio).
  • Willingness and ability to relocate and/or undertake country assignments.

The specific disciplines and specialist professional areas that are aligned to our Ten-Year Strategy (TYS) and our gender strategy are the following:

  1. Financial Sector Development
    • Public and Private Sector Financial Management, Knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards, International Public Sector Accounting Standards and International Standards on Auditing, International Capital Markets, Environmental Finance.
    • Actuarial Science, Investment Management and Analysis, Accounting, Financial Audit
  2. Natural Resource Management
    • Water resource management, Environmentalist, and Forestry specialists.
    • Climate change, Infrastructure financing, Energy economists.
  3. Gender Analysis and Integration
    • ICT and Gender, Women in oil and gas, Gender economists.
  4. Political Economy Analysis – Fragile States and Situations
    • Regional integration, Political Economy analysis, Public policy.
    • Macro Economists, Government financial management, development policy and operations.
  5. Corporate Lawyers
    • Public and private sectors operations.
    • Administrative affairs.
  6. Engineers
    • Architect, Transport economists, ICT specialist, Agro-industry.

The Bank expects to recruit between 15 and 20 candidates in the identified relevant focus areas. Female candidates are encouraged to apply.
